 – Mark 7:24-30’ by The Incredible Journey

“While they were there in Bethlehem, the time came for her to give birth, and she gave birth to her Son, her firstborn; and she wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger because there was no private room for them in the inn.

“In the same region there were shepherds staying out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord flashed and shone around them and they were terribly frightened.

“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all people.  For this day in the city of David there has been born for you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, the Messiah.’” Luke 2:6-11

This WeakEnd Assignment brings us back to our Bible study in the book of Mark.  Find an hour and location where you will not be disturbed, have your Bible, your notebook, something to write with and a refreshment.

Pray and thank the Lord for what He will show in this chapter as you study it more closely.  Ask Him to give you new insight from this passage.

1.    Read through all of chapter 7 of Mark.

2.    There are three sections:

o   Followers of Tradition – verses 1-13

o   The Heart of Man – verses 14-23

o   The Syrophoenician Woman – verses 24-37

3.    Underline in your Bible or write out the verse in each section above that seems to be the most important verse for you.

4.    Write why it seems important to you.

5.    In verses 6 and 7 Jesus quotes from Isaiah29:13.  Why do you think Jesus regularly quoted Old Testament passages to the Pharisees and scribes?

6.    In section 2, Jesus teaches about food.  As a Jew, He would have grown up observing all the many prohibitions about food and food handling that had been given to protect the Chosen people all through their history.  But there is another message hidden in this passage.  What is it?

In section 3, Jesus is on the road again, and seems to be hoping for some quiet.  Yet, everywhere He went, those who had heard of His teachings and His miracles searched Him out.

7.    What did you think of the dialogue between Jesus and the woman?  And what was the result?

Note:  There were two words the Jewish people used for dog.  One was a derogatory term that referred to Gentiles and pictured a despised, filthy, homeless street scavenger.  However, Jesus used another word that also meant ‘dog’.  It refers to a beloved household pet.  (This is a significant hint of how in the near future the Gentile believers would not be spiritually homeless, but would be welcomed into God’s house hold as His beloved children.

8.    When Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee, He performed a miracle that no one had ever seen before.  What did He do?

9.    Why do you think Jesus kept asking all those who witnessed His miracles to not speak of them?

10.          Bonus question:  What is the danger of following Jesus because He can perform miracles?

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)

Many of us have family, friends and loved ones with fragile health.  Pray God takes special care with them and protects them in practical ways and that the Lord will have mercy on them during this challenging time.

·      Tim – my brother – is seeing benefits from his new bi-pap machine and is sleeping better.  Pray for his continued wisdom and patience in managing his COPD (chronic-obstructive pulmonary disease) and arthritis.  Pray his new doctor is attentive, wise and compassionate.  Pray for Barb, his wife for her strength and compassion.  Continue to grow their faith as give them wisdom as they share Christ with others.  Pray for his strength and wisdom as he awaits an important insurance refund.

·      Ray Sr. – now in respite care.  Pray the Lord opens His heart to the Truth of salvation and through this time, relationships with family are strengthened and Ray Jr and Kathy may know of his decision.

·      Grant’s brother - still has quite severe headaches.  Had a shunt put in his skull to drain fluid from around the brain, as the fluid was putting pressure on the brain and affecting balance. Pray for his health carers as they work to adjust the flow rate and help minimise the pressure.

·      Sergio – has a job but at subsistence wages.  He is thankful for anything as Mexico is in dire economic condition.  The work is wearing him out physically.  His diabetes is presently under control and he has found a place to live.

·      Len Carbone – (59 years old).  Pray he wakes to the message of the Cross and the compassionate love of Jesus.  Had brain tumour surgery in 2002 and on disability since.  His loneliness has overwhelmed him as he fights with his disability and those around him.  Pray for a godly and patient friend to show him God’s love.

·      Aunt Donna – with dementia.  Please pray for her daughters so they know how best to care for her.

·      Penne –widowed after 43 years, the last ten of which she was her husband’s full-time caregiver.  She suffers mental problems from a childhood experience and has reached out to Patti (who asks for wisdom and patience).  Penne has ‘disowned’ all her family, and although a believer, does not attend fellowship for support.  Please pray for her peace of mind and God’s guidance.
