Year-End Message

“Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armour of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the full armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

“Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with Truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness and having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view; be on the alert with all perseverance, and petition for all the saints, and pray on my behalf, that the utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth [and in writing this devotion daily for you] to make known with boldness the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” Ephesians 6:10-20

“Which is the ‘true’ story of Christmas: Luke’s pastoral version or Revelation’s account of the cosmos at war [in chapter 12 of that book]? They are the same story, of course; only the level of viewing differs. Luke gives the view from the earth and Revelation shades in details from the unseen world. The two worlds come together vividly in three of Jesus’ most famous stories, the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. All three make the same point: great joy breaks out in heaven when a sinner repents.”*

Isn’t it neat that the Lord has placed me in Australia so many of my friends from home will have this message to consider a day ahead of the last day of 2010!

Take care to understand His Word. Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Flies or Sparrows?

“What is man that Thou dost magnify him, and that Thou art concerned about him, that Thou dost examine him every morning, and try him every moment?” Job 7:17-18

“When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars which Thou hast ordained; what is man that Thou dost take thought of him; and the son of man, that Thou dost care for him? Yet Thou hast made him a little lower then God [the angels], and dost crown him with glory and majesty! Thou doest make him to rule over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet. All sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of heaven, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth!” Psalm 8:3-9

“’Some say that to the gods we are like flies that boys idly swat on a summer day. Others say that not a feather from a sparrow falls to the ground without the will of the Heavenly Father.’ Thornton Wilder, The Bridge of San Louis Rey” *

“’Are not five sparrows sold for two cents/ And yet not one of them is forgotten before God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.’” Luke 12:6-7

I’m for the sparrows!

Pie in the Sky

“Thine, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Thine is the dominion, O Lord, and Thou doest exalt Thyself as head over all. Both riches and honour come from Thee, and Thou dost rule over all, and in Thy hand is power and might; and it lies in Thy hand to make great, and to strengthen everyone. Now therefore our God, we thank Thee, and praise Thy glorious name. But who am I and who are my people that we should be able to offer as generously as this? For all things come from Thee, and from Thy hand we have given Thee.” I Chronicles 29:11-14

“Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Thy Book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.” Psalm 139:16

“’Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us of our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.’” Matthew 6:9-13

“’To believe in the supernatural is not simply to believe that after living a successful, material, and fairly virtuous life here one will continue to exist in the best possible substitute for this world, or that after living a starved and stunted life here one will be compensated with all the good things one has gone without; it is to believe that the supernatural is the greatest reality here and now.’ – T.S. Eliot” *

At this time of year you can become focused on the past or the future and let your mind slip away from the responsibility of today. Right now is His gift to you! You can’t go back or forward. If you do look back, it’s best to search for His lessons; if you look forward goals can only succeed if they are in His will. Today .... well King David said it best:

“This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24

Where are you?

“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He began asking His disciples, saying, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘but who do YOU say that I am?’” Matthew 16:13-14

“So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, ‘Give glory to God; we know that this Man is a sinner.’ He therefore answered, ‘Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing that I do know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.’

“Jesus heard that they had put him out; and finding him, He said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’ He answered and said, ‘And who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?’ Jesus said to him, ‘You have both seen Him, and He is the One who is talking with you.’ And he said, ‘Lord, I believe,’ And he worshiped Him.” John 9:24-25, 35-38

“Job has put God on trial, accusing Him of unfair acts against an innocent party. Angry, satirical, betrayed. Job wanders as close to blasphemy as he can get – just to the edge. His words have a startlingly familiar ring because they are so modern. He gives voice to our most deeply felt complaints against God. But chapters one and two prove that, regardless of what Job thinks, God is NOT on trial in this book. Job is on trial.

The point of the book is not suffering; Where is God when it hurts? The prologue dealt with that issue. The point is faith: Where is Job when it hurts? How is HE responding? To understand the Book of Job, we must begin there.”*

As we look toward the start of a New Year, perhaps we might begin there too!

Nobody Special But You!

“And it came about that while they were there the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her first-born Son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

“’And this will be a sign for you; you will find a Baby wrapped in clothes, and lying in a manager.’ And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.’

“And it came about when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds began saying to one another, ‘Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.’ And they came in haste and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. And when they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.”

Around the world, the One-to one message of hope and a future, in a time of madness was born in a grimy stable, surrounded by two teenagers who were tired, hungry, fearful and overwhelmed with their faith. The Child was THE gift to finally and securely bridge the huge chasm between God and each one of His children.

Once you see and trust in His Grace and Truth, you are never the same again. His gift is impossible to imagine or fathom, it is to be enjoyed – a NEW life in you for eternity!

May the holidays be filled with memories of His hand in your daily life!

Why MEEEEE?!!!

“And he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed by the name of the Lord. Through all of this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.

“And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man fearing God and turning away from evil. And he STILL holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to ruin him without cause.’

“And Satan answered the Lord and said, ‘Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. However, put forth Thy hand, now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse Thee to Thy face.’ So the Lord said to Satan, ‘Behold, he is in your power, only spare his life.’ Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.” Job 1:21-22, 2:3-7

“What did Job do wrong? Nothing. He represents the very best of the species. Didn’t God Himself call Job ‘blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil’? Why then is Job suffering? Not for punishment. Far from it – he has been selected as the principal player in a great contest of the heavens.

“The prologue shows God and Satan involved in – something resembling a wager. – Satan scoffs that God, unworthy of love in Himself, only attracts people like Job because they’re ‘bribed’ to follow Him.

“When God accepts the challenge to test Satan’s theory, thus consenting to let Job’s response settle the issue, the calamities begin to rain down on poor, unsuspecting Job. – the Book of Job shows us God’s point of view.”*

Sometimes it is good to see someone real who has managed a hard walk with the Lord to appreciate how strong the LORD is during times of difficulty and to remember how important family & friends are when you are weak, afraid & confused & in pain. THE Paradigm Shift

“”And it came about that as he journeyed, he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; and he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’

“And he said, ‘Who art Thou, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, but rise, and enter the city, and it shall be told you what you must do.’ And the men who travelled with him stood speechless, hearing the voice, but seeing no one. And Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus.” Acts 9:3-8

“I once regarded Job as a profound expression of human disappointment ...As I studied the book further, however, I discovered that it does not really present the human viewpoint. God is the central character in the Bible, and nowhere does this come through more clearly than in the Book of Job. – It helps to think of the Book of Job as a mystery play, a ‘whodunit’ detective story. Before the play, the director explains his work – he solves every mystery in the play except one: how will the main character respond? Will Job trust God or deny Him?” *

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the Word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.” Hebrews 11:1-3

A ‘paradigm shift’ is a major change in the way we look at something — a radical change in personal beliefs, complex systems or organizations, replacing the former way of thinking or organizing with a radically different way of thinking or organizing. Thinking of the central character of the Bible as God rather than man is a significant paradigm shift. Give it some thought.

Purpose of Book of Job?

“Then Satan answered the Lord, ‘Does Job fear God for nothing? Hast Thou not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side?’ Thou has blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But put forth Thy hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse Thee to Thy face.’ Then the Lord said to Satan, Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.’” Job 1:9-12

“’Job? Everybody knows what Job is about. It’s the Bible’s most complete treatment of the problem of suffering. It’s about terrible grief and bewildering pain.’

“But I now believe I misread the book – or, more accurately, didn’t take into account the entire book. I’m coming to the conclusion that Job is not really about the problem of pain. Job is primarily about faith in its starkest form.” *

And perhaps it is also about having faith in the midst of pain and suffering...and confusion and lonliness and .... well, you get the idea.

What About Job?

“There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job, and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God, and turning away from evil. And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. His possessions were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was the greatest of all men of the east.

“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them, and the Lord said to Satan, ‘From where do you come?’ The Satan answered the Lord and said, ‘From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.’

“And the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.’” Job 1:1-3, 6-8

“Possibly the oldest book in the Bible, Job reads like the most modern. Its extreme portrayal – one man confronting the abyss in a universe that makes no sense – foreshadows the predicament of modern humanity.

“People who reject nearly everything else in the Bible keep coming back to Job for inspiration. Its recurring theme – ‘How can a good God allow suffering – is [for them] the only problem worth discussing,’ said contemporary British novelist Muriel Sparks in her book The Only Problem. The problem of pain is a modern obsession, the theological kryptonite of our time.”*

So what happens when nothing happens well or right in our lives? Hummm, where is God then?

Get Real!

“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result that you be perfect and complete lacking in nothing.” James 12-4

“And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weakness, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” II Corinthians 12:9

“’Endurance is not just the ability to bear a hard thing, but to turn it into glory,’ – ‘I tell you, Philip, it does not help to talk of the good that results from pain.’ – Theological concepts don’t amount to very much unless they can speak to someone [who is deeply hurting], who gropes for God’s love in a world bordered by grief. I recalled a floundering minister in a John Updike novel who said, ‘Something’s gone wrong. I have no faith. Or rather, I have faith, but it doesn’t seem to apply.’ How does it apply? What do we have a right to expect from God?”*

“Martha therefore said to Jesus, ‘Lord if You had been here, my brother would not have died. – Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, ‘Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.’ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her, also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled, and said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to Him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept.” John 11:20, 32-35

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the choice to sin was NEVER in God’s plan. Sin brought with it pain, suffering and sorrow. But God never leaves us; and although He may or may not intervene, He still weeps with us. Most of all, He found a perfect way to restore the relationship so we can have intimacy with Him as He walks beside us or carries us through every high and low in our lives. Now THAT is the real miracle!

Reconciliation

“’If therefore you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave you offering there before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.’” Matthew 5:23-24

“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating through us;p we bet you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God." I Corinthians 5:20

“But the Bible contained some surprises: notably that such times of frequent miracles usually did not foster long-term belief. Just the opposite – most of them stand out as examples of faithlessness.

“God’s ‘goal,’ if one can speak in such terms, is not to overpower all skeptics with a flash miracle; He could do that in an instant if He wished. Rather, He seeks to reconcile; to love, and to be loved”*

“For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.. And althou7gh you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach” Colossians 1:19-22

To “reconcile” means a change of heart attitude; to change from one condition to another, one attitude toward another. Reconciliation is what God accomplishes, exercising His grace toward us as sinners when we accept His gift of hope through faith in the sacrifice of Christ’s life as full payment for our sins – past, present and future.”

Mutual & Double Risk

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. – Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned – for until the Law sin was in the world; but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

“For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. And the Law came in that the transgression might increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 5:8, 19-21

“God’s plan includes risk on both sides. For us, it means risking our independence by committing to follow an invisible God who requires of us faith and obedience. For God, it means risking that we, like the Israelites, may never grow up; it means risking that we may never love Him. Evidently, He thought it a gamble worth taking.” *

“’A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.’” John 13:34-35

This mutual risk is demonstrated in our lives when we love another person in our lives, because we must risk our hearts to love another...and hope they do the same! The double risk for God is that others watch us to see if there can be a Love that actually works!

What's the Gain!?

“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilt of all. For He who said, ‘Do nt commit adultery,’ also said, ‘Do not commit murder.’ Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.” James 2:10-11

“’For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. – You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbour, and hate your enemy’. But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.’” Matthew 5:20 & 43-45a

[Paul speaking:] “’What, are you crazy!! The gain? Go back and read Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy at one sitting, and then we can talk. You call those “good old days’? Who wants to live like that? Do you want to spend every day of your life worrying about your eternal destiny? Do you want to scramble all day to make sure you keep all those rules?

“Hey I spent half my life trying to measure up to those demands and you can have them. The difference between the Law and Spirit is the difference between death and life, between slavery and freedom, between perpetual childhood and growing up. Why would ANYONE want to go back to that?’” *

“But God being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by Grace you have been saved through faith’ and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.” Ephesians 2:4-9

We just CAN’T do this without His loving grace!!!

1,275 Denominations

“I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, allowing forbearance to one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

“There is one Body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.  But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift." Ephesians 4:1-7

“The change from the visible presence of God in the wilderness to the invisible presence of the Holy Spirit involves a certain kind of loss as well. We lost the clear, sure proof that God exists. Nowadays, God does not hover over us in a cloud that we can gaze at for reassurance.

“In fact, God’s reliance on the church almost guarantees that disappointment with God will be permanent and epidemic.

“But 1,275 denominations in the U.S. alone attest to the difficulty of the Chruch agreeing on God’s will about anything nowadays. The confused voice of the modern church is part of the cost, the disadvantage to living today rather than with the Hebrews in the desert or among the disciples who followed Jesus.” *

“Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no division among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, ‘I am of Paul,’ and ‘I of Apploos,’ and ‘I of Cephas,’ and I of Christ.’

“Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptised in the name of Paul?" I Corinthians 1:10-13

No wonder the world and His children sometimes get concerned and confused.

It's Over To You & Me

“To these He also presented Himself alive, after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. And gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, ‘Which,’ He said, ‘you heard of from Me; for John baptised with water, but you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’

“And so when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, ‘Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel? He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority, but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.’” Acts 1:4-8

“The Bible, in fact presents the union of ordinary people with God’s Spirit as the supreme achievement of creation. God’s goal all along was to equip us to accomplish His will in the world. That slow difficult process will one day result in the total restoration of the earth.” *

His plan for your life and my life is to be His hands and feet here and now!

True Romance

“’And I will betroth you to Me forever; yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice. In lovingkindness and in compassion. And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, then you will know the Lord. And it will come about in that day that I will respond,’ declares the Lord. I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth. And the earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine, and to the oil, and they will respond to Jezreel. And I will sow her for Myself in the land. I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion. And I will say to those who were not My people, you are My people!’ and they will say, Thou art my God!’’” Hosea 2:19-23

“The difference between these two relationships [love of a child and love of a spouse] shows, I believe, what God has been seeking in His long history with the human race. He desires not the clinging, helpless love of a child who has no choice, but the mature, freely-given love of a lover. He has been ‘romancing’ us all along.” *

Depend on Me

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He lifts up [off the ground to ensure it gets more air & to clean off the dust, so more light can get in], and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it, that it may bear more fruit.

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.” John 15:1-9 (selected)

“To understand the gain to God, think back to the images from the Prophets: God as Parent and as Lover. Both those human relationships contain elements of what God has always been seeking from human beings. One word: dependence holds the key – the key to what they have in common and the key to how they differ.

“For a baby, dependence is everything: someone else must meet its every need or the child will die.

“Lovers, however, reverse the pattern. A lover possesses complete freedom, yet chooses to give it away and become dependent. ‘Submit to one another,’ says the Bible, and any couple can tell you that’s an apt description of the day-to-day process of getting along. In a healthy marriage, one submits to the other’s wishes voluntarily, out of love. In an unhealthy marriage, submission becomes part of a power struggle, a tug of war between competing egos.” *

“We love because He first loved us.” I John 4:19

God's Choice

“Oh, the depts. of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counsellor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to Him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever Amen.

“I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."  Romans 11:33-12:1

“We must not press the point so far as to think God “needs” our cooperation. Rather, He has chosen us as His preferred way to reclaim His creation here on earth. He uses human instruments just as my brain uses the instruments of fingers and hand and wrist to write this sentence.” *

Lord, let us all be instruments of Your peace and compassion and most of all of your unfettered and uncontainable and unimaginable and incomparable love in Thanksgiving for Your hand now in our hands and help us always remember:

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (full and perfect payment) for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” I John 4:10-11

God's Three Humiliations

“And He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ And Peter answered and said, ‘The Christ of God.’ But He warned them, and instructed them not to tell this to anyone, saying, ‘The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.’ And he was saying to them all, ‘If any one wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

“For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My Words, of his will the Son of Man be ashamed when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.’” Luke 9:20-26

“Dorothy Sayers has said that God underwent three great humiliations in His efforts to rescue the human race. The first was the incarnation, when He took on the confines of a physical body. The second was the Cross, when He suffered the ignominy of public execution. The third humiliation, Sayers suggested, is the Church. In an awesome act of self-denial, God entrusted His reputation to ordinary people.”

One thing that amazes me is how He never gives up on us...even those times when we give up on Him.

No to Business Case.

“But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. And when they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some were doubtful.

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:16-20

“What, exactly, does God’s plan for the ages accomplish? If one could submit that plan to something like a ‘cost-benefit analysis’ used by corporations, what would be the ‘gains’ and ‘costs’ of such a plan – for God and for us?

“The Church’s obvious defects would seem to be the greatest cost to God. Just as He committed His name to the nation Israel and had it dragged through mud, He no commits His Spirit to flawed human beings.” *

I hope you never grow tired of those four verses in Matthew, for they hold such contrast and hope, that they prove irresistible to me! I pray your Thanksgiving was a joy and a time of sharing with family and friends and that you did not eat too much!
