Kingdom Character/ Austin Hamrick by Cornerstone Chapel,

“Then the Lord met Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, ‘Return to Balak and thus you shall speak.’  He came to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering and the leaders of Moab with him.  And Balak said to him, ‘What has the Lord spoken?’

‘Then he took up his discourse and said, ‘Arise, O Balak, and hear; give ear to me, O son of Zippor!  God is not a man, they He should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it?  Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

“’Behold, I have received a command to bless; when He has blessed, then I cannot revoke it.  He has not observed misfortune in Jacob; nor has He seen trouble in Israel; the Lord his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.

“’God brings them out of Egypt, He is for them like the horns of the wild ox.  For there is no omen against Jacob, nor is there any divination against Israel; at the proper time it shall be said to Jacob and to Israel, what God has done!  Behold, a people rises like a lioness; and as a lion it lifts itself; it will not lie down until it devours the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain.’” Numbers 23:16-24

Balaam was not one of God’s chosen people but he was willing to acknowledge that Jehovah was indeed a powerful God.  But he did not believe in Jehovah as the only true God.  His story exposes the deception of maintaining an outward façade of spirituality over a corrup0t inward life.

Balaam was a man ready to obey God’s command if he could profit from doing so.  This mixed motive of ‘obedience with profit’ eventually led to his death.  Though he realised the awesome power of Israel’s God, his heart was occupied with the wealth he could gain in Moab.

In the above passage the king of Moab, Balak, has taken Balaam to various locations near where the Israelites are camped and commanded him to curse them, yet, Balaam knows better.  And rebukes the king and reminds him that what God has blessed no man can undo that blessing.

“Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died.  And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God.  So God heard their groanings and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them.”  Exodus 2:23-25

“But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” II Peter 3:8-9

There are times when we long for a quick and easy answer to our prayers and God seems not to be paying attention.  But God never misses a thing.  He knows what is waiting around every corner.  He manages our situations for our good and His glory.

Of course, trusting is difficult but focusing on what we know of our heavenly Father -- rather on our heartache, pain and confusion -- helps build our trust as we purpose to hand over our request to Him.

About Jacob’s Ladder (Biblical Stories Explained)

By Grace Digital Network (15 min 4 sec)

“Then Jacob departed from Beersheba and went toward Haran.  He came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head and lay down in that place.  He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

“And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and your descendants.  Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

“’Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised.” Genesis 28:10-15

3.    What did Jacob use for a pillow?

4.    Describe the details of Jacob’s dream.

5.    Who spoke with Jacob in his dream?
