Why Share?

“Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers and elders of the people, if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead – by this name this man stands here before you in good health.

“He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the very corner stone.  And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved.’” Acts 4:8-12

“A person needs to become a Christian not because of the needs in their life, but because Jesus Christ is true, and He is Lord.  If we only preach the Gospel because it works, we compete with a thousand other things that may claim to work.  If we preach Christ only because He meets needs, we have nothing to say to people whose lives are relatively trouble free and feel able to handle the problems themselves.  The Gospel is important because it is true.”*

Sharing our faith is not about getting through a testimony or reading a tract or even Bible verses with a pre-Christian, although all these tools may help.  It is instead, relying on the Lord’s leading moment-by-moment to live a life that attracts others to ask, “What is it about you!  Your life is not perfect, but there is something about you that is different.”  It is probably one of the confusing things about faith in Christ; He doesn’t necessarily take away our challenges, but He will give us the grace to be His witness even through the worst of things.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Successful, But Lost

“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore also God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:5-11

“The Bible teaches that the Lordship of Christ is an established fact to the extent that in the course of time, every person who ever lived will come to recognise this. This is why the Gospel is important. We do not preach the Gospel just because it works, but because it is true. A person needs to become a Christian not because of the needs in their life, but because Jesus Christ is true, and He is Lord.*

Larry Burkette, one of my precious teachers had many provocative insights that he gleaned from a lifetime of immersion in God’s Word. One was that you can follow God’s wisdom in your life without being a Christian and His principles will work because they are true and in line with God’s plan, however, this alone will not save you! Only by recognising Christ as Saviour and Lord does that.

Take care with love, especially His! Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Like It Or Not

“This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.  Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured fourth this which you both see and hear.  For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says:  ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet.’

“Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ – this Jesus whom you crucified.” Acts 2:32-36

“For it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.’  So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God.” Romans 14:11-12

“He is Lord, stated Peter, not because WE make him Lord, but because GOD HAS made Him Lord – it is as Lord that we must come to terms with Him. – Are you prepared to submit to the authority of His “government” or not?

“The Lordship of Christ must be understood as an objective reality.  He is not Lord because we make Him Lord, but because has made Him Lord, and whether I personally like it or not, all of history is going to wind up at the feet of Jesus Christ and will be answerable to Him.”*

Lordship!

“Then the Lord said, ‘Because this people draw near with their words and honour Me with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote, therefore behold, I will once again deal marvellously with this people, wondrously marvellous; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be concealed.  Woe to those who deeply hide their plans from the Lord, and whose deeds are done in a dark place, and they say, ‘Who sees us?’  or ‘Who knows us?’  You turn things around!  Shall the potter be considered as EQUAL with the clay, that what is made should say to its maker, ‘He did not make me.’; or what is formed say to him who formed it, ‘He has no understanding.” Isaiah 29:13-16

“What do we mean when we speak of the ‘Lordship of Christ’ in our lives?  We are not talking about a relationship where there are no tensions, everything is well and we are approaching something akin to sinlessness!  We are not even talking about being filled with the Holy Spirit, as though that were a synonym for knowing Christ as Lord.  We ARE talking about an understanding of Him that leads to an ATTITUDE TOWARDS Him.”*

The key is heart attitude when it comes to Lordship of Christ...and that is your choice moment by moment!

Two Kinds of Christians?

“For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.  For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.”  Romans 14:7-9

“There is an idea that there are two kinds of Christians.  There is the ‘average Christian, who knows Christ as Saviour, whose past sins have been forgiven and they will go to heaven when they die.  But there is also a ‘super-deluxe’ version where a person takes it all much farther and has Christ not just as Saviour but as Lord.”*

I think there ARE two kinds of Christians...those who are LEARNING what it means to be a follower of Christ and saved by His amazing Grace and those who are REVIEWING what it means to be a follower of Christ.  Walking with Christ is about always being aware of his lordship, sovereignty, wisdom and grace...even when you are stumbling and striking your foot against a stone!

Christ as Servant?

“For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you.  For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

“Therefore from now on we recognise no man according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer.  Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things pass away; behold, new things have come.” II Corinthians 5:13-17

“Do you see the basic problem with the rich young ruler?  He wanted Christ as his servant, but not as his master.  He wanted Christ to meet his need, but not to tell him what to do.  There is no experience of God on those terms.”*

Surely Christ came to serve as an example for us to attract us; yet He saved us to demonstrate that choosing Him means we too demonstrate our changed life as an example for pre-Christians to attract them to Him.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Negotiation for Salvation?

"And looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him, and said to him, ‘One thing you lack; go and sell all you possess, and give it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’” Mark 10:21

“’Do not lay up for your treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where thieves do not break in and steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’” Matthew 6:19-21

“Like it or not, that was Jesus’ very precise prescription for receiving eternal life!  -- As far as we know, he never did receive eternal life.  Jesus did not call the man back and say something like, ‘I am sorry I made it so hard for you.  I didn’t mean to frighten you away.  Let’s negotiate a relationship.  What kind of Christian would you like to be?  If you are not willing to sell everything, how much are you prepared to give away?’  The terms of receiving eternal life were not open to discussion, negotiation or compromise.”*

Living out your life as a Christian is about “heart attitude”.  God owns the cattle on a thousand hills, He does not need your stuff, He only needs your heart abandoned to His will.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Counting the Cost

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.  For whoever wishes to save his life, shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it.  For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul.  Or what will a man given in exchange for his soul?

“’For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then recompense every man according to his deeds.  Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’” Matthew 16:24-28

“However, in the ministry of Jesus Christ He never talked about salvation being free.  He always talked about it being costly.  Furthermore, He instructed people to count the cost and respond on the basis of a willingness to pay that cost.  For the Christian life to be ‘free’ does not mean that it is ‘cheap’, that it is obtainable by little more than nodding one’s head in God’s direction, or by just believing a few facts about Him.  There is a cost that must be met.”*

During my time in the Navigator ministries, I first heard Don Lanier speak of the cost of discipleship.  For you see salvation is by grace, yet the cost of discipleship is high.  It is a willingness to be willing to listen, hear and choose to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit within us.

Please take extra time with the prayer list today and please send me some updates.  I realise the list is growing long and is sometimes repetitive, but many need our prayers today!

Salvation IS free, yet...

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:4-10

“Let us face realistically that there is a cost to becoming and to being a Christian.  We talk about salvation being ‘free, and this is wonderfully true, but only in a limited sense.  It IS free in so far that we cannot purchase it or earn it, nor can we in any way bargain for salvation on the basis of our own goodness.

“In this regard, the Christian life is absolutely free and were it anything other than that we would be without hope.  However in the ministry of Jesus Christ He never talked about salvation being free.  He ALWAYS talked about it being costly.”*

We are saved, not to exercise our license to sin, but to a liberty to choose to be His example in this world to those who have not yet met Him.

Please take extra time with the prayer list today and please send me some updates.  I realise the list is growing long and is sometimes repetitive, but many need our prayers today!

Christian Realities

“Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?’  Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, but through Me.  If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also, from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.

“Philip said to Him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.’  Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip?  He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how do you say, ‘Show us the Father’?  Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me?

“The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.  Believe Me that I am in the Father,  and the Father in Me; otherwise believe on account of the works themselves.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to the Father.  And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John 14:8-13

“A person can express all the right sentiments about Jesus Christ, sing the right songs, go to the right church and use the right vocabulary, but unless they are living on God’s terms, where He has issued the ‘ticket’ and the right conditions have been met (acknowledge of responsibility for choosing sin and now choosing Christ to save them from that sin and walk in His light into the future), they will have a Christianity that just won’t work.  They will discover that when they want to ‘fly’, the ticket will bounce at the check-in desk!  There will be no power in their lives, no consciousness of God, the Bible will remain dry, prayer will be a chore, and on one will ever see a living God being active in their lives.”*

Kinds of Christians

“’Abide in Me, and I in you, As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.  I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing. – If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you.  By this is My Father glorified; that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.’” John 15:4-8

“Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.” I Corinthians 1:10

“Although the word ‘Christian’ may have come to mean a multitude of things to a multitude of people, after all is said and done there is only one kind of Christianity that is valid – that is God’s kind!  We do not have the freedom to pick and choose the aspects of God’s revelation that re attractive, and disregard or ignore the parts we do not like, still call it Christian and expect it to work, or regard it as authentic.  We can only live the Christian life on God’s terms.  Anything else may make us religious, but will leave us powerless.”*

The first “job” man had was in identifying, classifying and naming the animals.  Since then we have used our ability to discriminate in many ways, including attempting to cause divisions in Christ’s Body of believers.  There is only one Saviour and only one Truth – His.

Please take extra time with the prayer list today and please send me some updates.  I realise the list is growing long and is sometimes repetitive, but many need our prayers today!

Hope of Glory

“to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.  And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ.  And for this purpose also I labour, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.” Colossians 1:27-29

“But to this day whenever Moses [the Law] is read, a veil lies over their heart; but whenever a man turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away [a light goes on].  Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, thee is liberty.  But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord are being [continuously] transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” II Corinthians 3:15-18

“We have fallen short of the ‘glory of God’, and it is the restoration of that ‘glory’ that is the purpose of salvation, and the mark of a true Christian.  ’Glory’ is that which we have sinned and come short of, and it is the restored presence of Christ within a person that is their hope of being able to hit the target and fulfil the purpose of their existence, and to be a revelation of the character of God.

“This is NOT an immediate or instant event, but a growing process.  In this life there will be a continuous growth into the likeness of the Lord Jesus Christ, and it will not be complete until we are in His presence forever.”*

The purpose of our lives IS to glorify God so the Great Commission can be fulfilled.
