The Problem with Prosperity Promises

"Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, 'O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter.  If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire, and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king.

"'But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.'" Daniel 3:16-18

[Jesus teaching on wealth] "'Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.'" Matthew 6:19-21

Jay Bacik preached a most remarkable sermon for an evening service once.  Anyone who attended could never forget it.  He was talking about shopping the Bible for verses you like.  He found one here and spoke it out and smiled.  He read another out; then another.

Then, he came to one that was not so "positive" and did not promise good stuff.  He looked at all of us and frowned, grabbed the "offending" page and tore it out of the Bible, wadded it up and threw it behind him...then with another and another.

The congregation was gobsmacked, shocked to silence.  What had he DONE!!  How could anyone, especially a pastor, disrespect of God's holy Word!  Then Jay delivered the "punch line":  God's Word was not written for our pleasure and prosperity.  It is written for our good and God's glory.

Just because we find a passage we don't like, telling us to change our lives to be more like Christ, we can't just tear it out and throw it away, shopping for stuff we really want to find in the Bible!

Join me as we discover how the prosperity gospel is much like a creeping vine that chokes off the pages of the Bible that don't promise good stuff!

As we begin the journey exploring this topic, I need your prayers for openness before God's Word and for wisdom to handle it to please Him, that it might open many eyes that are growing dim.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

My First Memory Verse

"And Jesus was going about all the cities and the villages teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.

"And seeing the multitudes, He felt compassion for them because they were distressed and downcast like sheep without a shepherd.  Then He said to His disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.  Therefore, beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.'" Matthew 9:35-38

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.  But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them because they fainted and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

"Then saith He unto His disciples, 'The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore to the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth labourers into His harvest.'" King James version

Before I was officially a teenager, this verse in Matthew, captured my heart.  I was not really sure what the "Gospel of the kingdom" was.  "Disciples"... well, that was a word that didn't mean much to me either.  And memorisation was for poetry!

Yet, this is the first verse I memorised, believing the Lord gave it to me in a special way.  Somehow, as unchurched and unaware as I was, I was compelled to pray for this unknown "harvest", knowing I would take part in gleaning in His fields one day.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

Some of My Life-Changing Verses

"O Lord, Thou hast searched me, and known me.  Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thought from afar.  Thou dost scrutinise my path and my lying down, and art intimately acquainted with all my ways.

"Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, Thou dost know it all.  Thou hast enclosed me behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me.  Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is too high, I cannot attain to it...

"For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother's womb.  I will give thanks to Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Thy works, and my soul knows it very well.

"My frame was not hidden from Thee when I was made in secret, and skilfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Thy book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them." Psalm 139:1-6, 13-16

I don't remember the first time I read these words and they touched my heart, maybe when I was 11 or 12.  There in my room alone with my King James Bible, unzipping it -- not even paying much attention to the little gold cross on the zipper pull.  I would not have read the New Testament yet so the cross was sort of unimportant.

Yet THESE words...that this mysterious God actually knew about me!  He designed and fixed everything in my life.  So HE had picked out my Mom and Dad for me before the foundations of the earth...now that made sense!  It was His choice.  I was not an accident or the cause of all the arguments in my family.

Now I understood I was purposefully-designed -- EVERY detail had been set in motion by God.

I do not even know how I knew God was sensible and wise, but I knew it and from this day onward, I smiled inside when things got difficult, painful and lonely -- because somehow I KNEW He loved me enough to be with me -- that all that was happening was NOT an accident or a mistake.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene
