Sin Foundations - Moment of Hesitation

"And the Lord said, 'The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave.  I will go down now, and see if they have done entirely according to its outcry, which has come to Me, and if not, I will know.'  Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before the Lord."  Genesis 18:20-22

This is a remarkable little couple of sentences.  First we see that the "stench" of sin filled the Lord's senses and cried out against these two cities and that the Lord hesitated to see how Abraham would react to the news of the Lord's visiting the lands.  He waits for us too!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Doing & Denying

"Then they said to him, 'Where is Sarah your wife?'  And he said, 'Behold, in the tent.'

"And he said, 'I will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.  And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him.  Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sara was past childbearing.  And Sarah laughed to herself, saying, 'After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?'

"And the Lord said to Abraham, 'Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?'  Is anything too difficult for the Lord?  At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.'

"Sarah denied it however, saying, 'I did not laugh', for she was afraid.  and He said, 'No, but you did laugh.'"  Genesis 18:9-15

Had Abraham spoken with his wife about the promise or not?  Well we can't be sure, but it seems she was trivialising the words of the angels, making it more about sensuality rather than the promise.  Yet, because she did laugh and did deny it, we have one of the great verses in the Bible to assure us of the omnipotence of our Father God (v. 14)!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Deflected Responsibility

"Then God said to Abraham, 'As for Sarai, your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.  And I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her, Then I will bless her and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.'

"Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, 'Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old?  And will Sarah, who is ninety years old bear a child?'

"And Abram said to God, 'Oh that Ishmael might live before Thee!'  But God said, 'No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for a everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.'" Genesis 17:15-19

You ever wonder if God has a sense of humour?  Here is a great instance of it, but it is, like many things, a little hidden.  Abraham laughs in his heart but God always hears our heart thoughts.  So this "can't You just use Ishmael", it's too late for me to bother with a child now!  So God gave the name of Isaac.  This name means "may He smile (upon him)".  Isn't God just amazing sometimes!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Running Away

"-- and she fled from her presence.

"Now the angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness by the spring on the way to Shur.  And he said, ;Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from and where are you going?'

"And she said, 'I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.'  Then the angel of the Lord said to her, 'Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority.'" Genesis 16:6b-9

Hagar was on her way back to Egypt and knew she was with child.  How angry she must have been.  However, even in the worst of situations, if you submit yourself to the Lord and honour Him with your actions, it's always better for you.  Sometimes there's even a special blessing in it.  Remember, however, that in every promise the Lord makes, there are conditions of obedience.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Triple Falseness

"And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight.  And Sarai said to Abram, 'May the wrong done to me be upon you.  I gave my maid into your arms; but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight.  May the Lord judge between you and me.'

"But Abram said to Sarai, 'Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight.'  So Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence." Genesis 16:4-6

Each of the three characters displays the untruth that is part of sin, in false pride, false blame and false neutrality.  Sarai's mast soon slipped to show the hatred behind the talk of justice and a quick solution.

Sin Foundations - No Miracle Here!

"So Sarai said to Abram, 'Now behold the Lord has prevented me from bearing children.  Please go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children through her.'  And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.  And after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.  And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived;" Genesis 16:2-4a

Here marks another stage in eliminating every means but miracle towards the promised birth.  It is ironical that after the heights attained in the last two chapters, Abram should capitulate to the voice of his wife, who certainly gave God due for her predicament.  But the Lord, "with whom is no variableness" watches over the disregarded person and pattern, and works His sovereign will, despite all the "help".

"So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

"Do all things without grumbling or disputing; that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast, the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may have cause to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain." Philippians 2:12-

Sin Foundations - Human Ingenuity

"Now Sarai, Abram's wife had born him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar.  So Sarai said to Abram, 'Now behold the Lord has prevented me from bearing children, please go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children through her.'" Genesis 16:1-2a

Abram would have shared his vision and revelation from God with his wife, yet she saw only "real" solutions and took action to hurry up the promise of God.  Doesn't work, you know.

"My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of days and years of life, and peace they will add to you.  Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, so you will find favour and good repute in the sight of God and man.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, do not be wise in your own eyes.  Fear the Lord and turn away from evil.  It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones." Proverbs 3:1-8

Sin Foundations - A Bitter Drum

"After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, 'Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; your reward shall be very great.'

"And Abram said, 'O Lord God, what will Thou give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?'  And Abram said, 'Since Thou hast given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.'

"Then behold the word of the Lord came to him saying, 'This man will not be your heir; but one who shall come forth from your own body shall be your heir." Genesis15:1-4

Not too many notice the significance of this great battle, for a great battle it was.  Abram, as a tribal chief, gathered about 318 of his own men to purse these powerful kings and rescue Lot.  The numbers are estimated to be something like 300 to one, as with Gideon.  They won the battle, killed a bunch of people, sent off the defeated, took all the spoils and marched home, met the priest Melchizedek, built an altar, thanked God.  Then as God was blessing him, he brought up how God disappointed him by not giving him a son yet!  Sound familiar...? Have a good weekend and remember God has perfect timing...and a bit of a temper if you nag Him!

"But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance."  II Peter 3:8-9

Sin Foundations - Wrong Place

"And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah and the king of Admah and the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is Zoar) came out; and they arrayed for battle against them in the valley of Siddim, against Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goiim and Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar - four kings against five.

"Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell into them.  But those who survived flee to the hill country.  Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply, and departed.  And they also took Lot, Abrah;s nephew, and his possessions and departed for he was living in Sodom." Genesis 14:8-12

Once we wander away from our Heavenly Father, no matter how attractive that place may seem, we may find danger and loss there.
