A Farewell to Adrain

Give Me Jesus by Danny Gokey

[Jesus teaching] “’Now there was a certain rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, gaily living in splendour every day.  And a certain poor man named Lazarus who laid at his gate, covered with sores, and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.

“’Now it came about that the poor man died and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.  And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom.  And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.’

“’But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you receive your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.  And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, in order that those who wish to come over from here to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from three to us.

“’And he said, ‘Then I beg you, Father, that you send him to my father’s house – for I have five brothers – that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment’  But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.

“’But he said, ‘No, Father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’  But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’” Luke 16:19—31

Adrian passed into Glory and into the arms of his loving Saviour, Jesus Christ, yesterday at 3AM on 31 October 2017.  There are few who remember him, but he was someone very special who loved the Lord so much.  I will miss his voice on the phone nearly every day as he struggled through this for all these years.  Perhaps, it is a good time to share your love and thoughts about eternity with those around you…

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

Just In Case

“Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt.  No go and strike Amelek and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him, but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.

“So Saul defeated the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is east of Egypt.  And he captured Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

“But Saul and the people, spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to destroy them utterly; but everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.” I Samuel 15:2-3, 7-9

Saul and the people disobeyed God, just in case they needed stuff for their future.

In my case, I developed a habit from childhood, likely because my parents had been deeply affected by the Great Depression.  Daddy conserved just about everything and always kept his tools clean and repaired and used things long after they should have been thrown out.  Mom could cook a meal from a handful of almost anything that would feed ten.  She sewed our clothes and even used the fabric scraps to make quilts from.  Everything in their lives was about caring for and conserving what we had.

In my case I keep a little of everything, just in case someday I don’t have anything.  And it is difficult to throw things out, even when I have two more to replace something; even if it is past its use-by date.

Yet, God owns the cattle on a thousand hills and He PROMISED to provide food, clothing and shelter for us.  We don’t need to keep a little of anything, just in case or hoard or be fearful of losing what we have.  We can trust God to know what is best for us.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

I Forced Myself!

“Also, some of the Hebrews crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead.  But as for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.  Now he waited seven days, according to the appointed time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattering from him.

“So Saul said, ‘Bring to me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.’  And he offered the burnt offering.  And it came about as soon as he finished offering the burnt offering, that behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him and to greet him.

“But Samuel said, ‘What have you done?’  And Saul said, ‘Because I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the appointed days, and that the Philistines were assembling at Michmash, therefore I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not asked the favour of the Lord.’  So I forced myself and offered the burnt offering.’” I Samuel 13:7-12

Can you imagine how life-changing it was for this nobody, Saul to be selected king?  All the wealth and special favours the Israelites would lavish on him.  The people were so happy to finally have their king.  But Saul was not prepared to be king (few would be able to maintain their integrity once crowned).

Power went to his head and he didn’t intend to wait or trust that God was watching over him and Israel.  Saul didn’t intend to wait for Samuel either.  A king is a man of action, after all and when Samuel did show up, he made it seem he meant to do right.  Yet, God controls all and this was a special test of Saul’s faith and trust in the One who had raised him up.  He failed the test and Israel also paid the price.

Trusting God is never easy if you are conscious because everything around you can diminish the perception of His power and distract you with “what ifs”.  God is almighty wise, and His plan is for your good and His glory.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene
