Triple Forgiveness

“And having arrested Him, they led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest, but Peter was following at a distance.  And after they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them.

“And a certain servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, and looking intently at him, said, ‘This man was with Him too.’  “But he denied it, saying, ‘Woman, I do not know Him.’

“And a little later, another saw him and said, ‘You are one of them too!’  But Peter said, ‘Man, I am not!’

And after about an hour had passed another man began to insist saying, ‘Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.’  “But Peter said, ‘Man, I do not know what you are talking about.’

“And immediately, while he was still speaking a cock crowed.  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, ‘Before a cock crows today, you will deny Me three times.’  And he went out and wept bitterly.” Luke 22:54-62

I often think of Peter after that day of betrayal and wonder how he ever found the courage and humility to approach the risen Lord Jesus Christ.  Yet, I know He gives us strength to accomplish great things for His purposes...no matter what our life has been or even is now or will be in the future.  That is triple forgiveness.

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare die.  But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:6-8

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (full, complete and perfect payment) for our sins.

“We love, because He first loved us.” I John 4:10 & 19

First Promise of Easter

“When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.  Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked,” Genesis 3:6-7a

“And the Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you more than all the cattle and more than any beast of the field; on your belly shall you go, and dust shall you eat all the days of your life; and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel.’” Genesis 3:14-15

Here are some thoughts to consider when reading this passage.  The book of Genesis, “sets the stage” for the rest of the Bible – establishes the theme.  These are the first words spoken by the Lord after the Fall.  The phrase “eating dust” refers to total defeat (Isa 65:23, Micah 7:17).  “Enmity" indicates war not just being enemies but between two sides:  the seed of the snake (Satan) and the seed of the woman (Jesus Christ).  In most versions "bruise you on the head" means to crush the head and to "bruise you on the heel" is about repeated attempts to defeat the Lord.  Yet, He was victorious over all attempts to stop God’s plan for you and all mankind!

“’For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.  For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him.  He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.’” John 3:16-18

Backfired Pride

“The king reflected and said, ‘Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?’

“While the word was in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared:  sovereignty has been removed from you, and you will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling place will be with the beasts of the field,

“’You will be given grass to eat like cattle, and seven periods of time will pass over you, until you recognise that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, and bestows it on whomever He wishes.’

“Immediately the word concerning Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled; and he was driven away from mankind and began eating grass like cattle, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.”

Sometimes being out in a field alone, eating grass is good for our heart attitude.  Oh, and the minute Nebuchadnezzar realised and repented from his pride, all was restored to him Daniel4:36-37).  There must be a lesson in there for all of us!

“But at the end of that period, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward the heaven and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honoured Him who lives forever; for His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation.

“’And all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing.  But He does according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth; and no one can ward off His hand or say to Him, ‘What hast Thou done?’’” Daniel 4:30-35

Looking Back

“For all things are for your sakes, that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God.

Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.  For the momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” II Corinthians 4:15-18

I just wrote an article for someone about seeing around corners and how the past doesn’t count except for learning how to wander through the present for the future...and when I looked for Scripture to substantiate this concept, it is apparent that our past is for a reason.  But it is the hope of glory that is our future and the momentary, light affliction of today or yesterday makes it all worth it.

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

Fear of People or God?

“And Samuel said, ‘Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.  For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry.  Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He has also rejected you from being king.”

“Then Saul said to Samuel, ‘I have sinned; I have indeed transgressed the command of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and listened to their voice.’” I Samuel 15:22-24

We are to pattern our lives and ministry on the example left behind by the Lord Jesus Christ, who trusted His very life into the hands of His Father KNOWING He always would watch over Him for the good of Father-God’s plan for His world.

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

“For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.  You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;” Hebrews 12:1-4

Keep Moving & Watch

“And as Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel looked, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; so the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.

“Then they said to Moses, ‘Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness?  Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt?  Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians;?  For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

“But Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear!  Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen you will never see them again forever.  The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.’” Exodus 14:10-14

Sometimes we hang around frozen in space, our resolve as mushy as a 10-day old banana, wondering what we are to do.  Well, think about these Israelites stomping their feet at God, when if they had just kept moving forward as the Father had told them to, they would probably not even have seen the Egyptians racing to overcome them!  There must be a good lesson in there for all of us.

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why are you crying out to Me?  Tell the sons of Israel to go forward.  And for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall go through the midst of the sea on dry land.’” Exodus 14:15-16

His Unseen Victories

[Father God speaking] “’Now gird up your loins, and arise, and speak to them all which I command you.  Do not be dismayed before them, lest I dismay you before them.  Now behold, I have made you today as a fortified city, and as a pillar of iron and as walls of bronze against the whole land to the kings of Judah, to its princes, to its priests and to the people of the land.  And they will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you.’ Declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 1:17-19

The promises that God has made to His people in the Bible are there to remind us we are not alone in our daily wanderings and our daily challenging.  There are always His victories that He will be working all around us.  Sometimes we get to see what they are and other times we are oblivious to them.  But know He is always working where His children are!

“’Only be strong and very courageous, be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.

“’This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.  Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous!  Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’” Joshua 1:7-9

Under the Circumstances

“Blesses is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.  Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

“But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.  Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.  Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

“Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow.  In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we might be, as it were, the first fruits among His creatures.” James 1:12-18

I remember a wonderful lesson from someone who laboured to disciple me.  I was upset and said:  “all things considered I’m doing alright ‘under the circumstances’.  He must have waited decades to have someone use that phrase.  He smiles and said to me, ‘What are you doing UNDER the circumstances, when the Lord would have you have victory every day?”

What I realised from our talk that day is that it is not the circumstances that cause me stress, but my attitude TOWARD the circumstances.  What about you?

“Therefore let him who things he stands take heed lest he fall.  No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and god is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.” I Corinthians 10:12-13

Peculiar Balance

“I will sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted; -- the Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise Him; my father’s God; and I will praise Him; my father’s God, and I will extol Him.

“The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is His name. – And in the greatness of Thine excellence Thou dost overthrow those who rise up against Thee; Thou dost send forth Thy burning anger, and it consumes them as chaff.

“Who is like Thee among the gods, O Lord?  Who is like Thee, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders? – In Thy lovingkindness Thou hast led the people whom Thou hast redeemed; Thy strength Thou hast guided them to Thy holy habitation.” Exodus 15:1b-13 various

What a peculiar balance the children of the Father have...one of reverence and awe and of a close intimacy that is from the inside out.  Yet this is what we inherit as His children...both, not just one.

[Jesus speaking] “’Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.’” Matthew 11:28-30

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

The Gap

“There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst, like a roaring lion tearing the prey.  They have devoured lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in the midst of her.

“Her priests have done violence to My law and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the profane, and they have not taught the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they hide their eyes from My Sabbaths; and I am profaned among them.

“Her princes within her are like wolves tearing the prey, by shedding blood and destroying lives in order to get dishonest gain.  And her prophets have smeared whitewash for them seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord God’, when the Lord has not spoken.  The people of the land have practiced oppression and committed robbery and they have wronged the poor and the needy and have oppressed the sojourner without justice.

“And I searched for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.’” Ezekiel 22: 25-30

This is one of my life verses and I claimed it during the Billy Graham Crusade that I have the privilege to work with when I was in Buffalo.  That I might once in my life be in the right place at the right time, like the little boy who was supposed to have saved Holland by sticking his finger in the hole in the dyke.
