I Was FIRST!

Wonderful, Merciful Saviour – Grace Larson

“And I have seen that every labour and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a man and his neighbour.  This too is vanity and striving after wind.” Ecclesiastes 4:4

“So, it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground.  And Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions.  And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering; but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard.

“So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.  Then the Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry?  And why has your countenance fallen?  If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up?  And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire for you, but you must master it.’” Genesis 4:3-7

I just love God’s Word for its surprises!  I had thought to write a very simple devotion this morning, but as the Holy Spirit often does, I found a new gem in these verses.

Who was the one to set the precedent?  It was Cain.  He was the one who wanted to demonstrate his love through his labour to the Lord.  And Abel followed after him, not wanting to miss his opportunity to do the same.

Both brought their best.  One was rejected.  The other praised.  One just went on about his life.  The other seethed with competitive anger until he could no longer stand it.

We all know where ‘sin crouching at the door’ can lead.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning.

Gather, Hoard and Accomplish

“Thus, I hated all the fruit of my labour for which I had laboured under the sun, for I must leave it to the man who will come after me.  And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool?  Yet he will have control over all the fruit of my labour for which I have laboured by acting wisely under the sun.  This too is vanity.

“Therefore, I completely despaired of all the fruit of my labour for which I had laboured under the sun.  Where there is a man who has laboured with wisdom, knowledge and skill, then he gives his legacy to one who has not laboured with them.  This too is vanity and a great evil.

“For what does a man get in all his labour and in his striving with which he labours under the sun?  Because all his days his task is painful and grievous; even at night his mind does not rest.  This too is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 2:18-23

Sometimes when someone passes on someone asks the question, ‘How much did he leave?”   The answer?  “Everything!”  Perhaps, that is why the wisdom of striving after wind makes so much sense.

Solomon reminds us that what we gather, hoard and accomplish is only vanity.  If these things preoccupy our lives they can never fill the emptiness.  Only the grace of God’s free enriching gift of eternity with Him, thanks to Jesus Christ sacrifice of everything, means anything.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning.
