Thinking

“but just as it is written, ‘Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him’

“For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.  For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man, which is in him?  Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.” I Corinthians 2:9-12

“But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by the act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” II Peter 1:20-21

“The Holy Spirit thinks. – If the Holy Spirit is the one who both knows the thoughts of God and who reveals and teaches them to us it indicates his ability to think. – Revelation is the Spirit’s task to the world.”*

I wonder what the Holy Spirit is thinking about all the people we meet today and how much the Father loves each one of them.  Neat!  Have a wonderful weekend!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

“’These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you.  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.  Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you.  Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.’” John 14:26

“’But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own imitative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.  He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you.  All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you.’” John 16:13-15

“Although sometimes the Holy Spirit is described as being like wind or like fire (in fact both the Hebrew and the Greek word for ‘Spirit’ in the Old and New Testament is the same as the word for ‘wind’) we must not see Him as something but as someone.  He is a person.

“The composite qualities of personality are the abilities to think, to feel and to decide.  That is to possess a mind, emotions and a will.  The Holy Spirit does not have a physical body, and neither does the Father but personality is not a physical attribute, it is a combination of three qualities.”*

The focus of our walk is not on the work or person of the Holy Spirit; the focus is to be thanksgiving for the grace of the Father toward us as individuals in providing a perfect sacrificial payment for our sins in Christ.  The Holy Spirit lives in our lives to keep Christ at the forefront of our thinking so we may accomplish the work Christ has left us to do:  grow more into the image of Christ and thereby witness/ testify about His work in our hearts, so others may seek and find Christ.

Meet the Holy Spirit - 1

“’But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.  And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me; and concerning judgment, because the rule of this world has been judged.

“’I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.  But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.’” John 16:13

“Who is the Holy Spirit?  It is interesting that throughout Scripture the Holy Spirit is not given a personal name, but is described only in terms of His work.  The Spirit remains anonymous as to His personal identity.  This has led some to think of the Holy Spirit as being less than a person.  He is sometimes thought of as a ‘power’, or a ‘force’, or an ‘influence’ which we need to tap and make use of in the way that wind can be used to fly a kite, or steam to drive an engine, or water to run a hydro-electric generator.  But this is not adequate.”*

Jesus promised that He would not leave us alone; that the Holy Spirit would come to be with us in our journey.  Some think the Trinity is sort of a hierarchy with God, the most powerful on the top, Jesus sort of his general manager and the Holy Spirit a bit of a janitor who takes care of day-to-day details.  Yet the mystery of the Trinity is that they are co-equal and each has taken a “part” of the Plan for us to work out in unique ways.  The Holy Spirit is with us from the moment we entrust our lives to the promise of God’s grace through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  In the coming days we will look a bit more at Him.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

A New Power

“And gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, ‘Which,’ He said, ‘you heard of from Me; for John baptised with water, but you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’

“And so when they had come together, they were asking Him saying, ‘Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?’  He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.’” Acts 1:4-8

“On Calvary, Christ dealt with our need for forgiveness when He died on the cross, but at Pentecost, He dealt with our need for power and godliness when the Holy Spirit was made freely available to anyone.  It is His presence within our lives that makes a person a Christian.”*

The Holy Spirit gives us the power to live out the life of Christ in our daily walk, for we are helpless without His direction.  The Father knew that although His Son would pay the price for our sins, we still needed His moment-by-moment strength to demonstrate His love in a world of chaos.  When He gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit it ensured a new life indeed!

And There's MORE !

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord  Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

“And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character, and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:1-5

“In a similar way, vital and wonderful as it is to be forgiven for our sin (and not for one moment do we belittle the significance of that), that is neither what makes us a Christian nor fulfils the purpose of being a Christian.  It is only a means to the end.  It makes possible the coming of the Holy Spirit into the life of the forgiven person, to live the life of Jesus Christ within them and reproduce the character of Jesus Christ through them.

“This is why it’s sad to meet Christians, who, whilst being very grateful for their forgiveness have never got around to enjoying the purpose of their forgiveness by living in the energy of the Holy Spirit.”*

This is a big thought and I hope you will spend time meditating on this over the weekend.  You might want to print out this devotion and carry it around with you so you can bring it to mind while you do other things.

Once In A Lifetime!

“For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.  For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

“However, YOU are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.  But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.  And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.  But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.” Romans 8:5-11

“A person is not a Christian because their sin has gone, but because the Holy Spirit has come!”*

This is a once-in-a-lifetime offer that’s guaranteed to never stop giving the gift of eternal life.  Once the sin debt is paid in the proper “currency” of Christ’s sacrifice, you just need to accept the very personal gift!  The “receipt” is a new life for now, powered by the Holy Spirit for His purposes.

Oh, one important bit of fine print regarding the transaction:  it’s non-refundable, can’t be exchanged or returned.  If you are dissatisfied, it’s your choice to be, because the gift is always yours from the moment of the transaction.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Oh, That Too?

“For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you.  For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

“Therefore from now on we recognise no man according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer.  Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” II Corinthians 5:13-17

“—man does not just have a need for forgiveness, but also a hunger for goodness.  A person’s consciousness of guilt derives from his desire to be good and it is the establishment of goodness that is the purpose of the work of Christ.  Christ forgives us our sin, not because being clean is the end product of His work, but in order that He might come and live His life within us by the Holy Spirit.  It is the coming of the Holy Spirit on the basis of our cleansing that actually makes a person a Christian.”*

He didn’t save us so our lives remain the same.  He saved us for His work and His vision.  His plan is not just to save US, but to save all men and women.  He needs us as His examples.  Now that is a little scary sometimes.  And on our own it should be.  Yet, when we give our lives wholly and trustingly into His hands, He never leaves us alone...the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our hearts and waits for us to give Him access to our lives moment-by-moment and inch-by-inch.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Exchange Rate

“Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away, behold, new things have come.  Now all those things are from God who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the Word of reconciliation.

“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating Christ through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.  He made Him who knew no sin to BE sin on our behalf that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” II Corinthians 5:17-21

“For God took the sinless Christ and poured into Him our sins.  Then, in exchange, He poured God’s goodness into us!” II Corinthians 5:21, Living Bible Paraphrase

“- There was a day in history when the skies turned black, and the Father turned His back upon the Son as the pure, holy, righteous Son of God became sin.  All of my filth, failure and sin was heaped upon the Lord Jesus, and, in exchange, all of His goodness and purity has been poured out upon me as a FORGIVEN sinner.

When you become a Christian you are a brand new person on the INSIDE.  The Holy Spirit gives you new life, and you are not the same any more.  You are not reformed, rehabilitated, or re-educated – you are a NEW creation, living in vital union with Christ (Colossians 2:6-7).  You are NOT merely turning over a new leaf, you are beginning a new life under the leadership of Christ!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Whiter Than White

“’Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.  Behold, Thou dost desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part Thou wilt make me know wisdom.  Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.’” Psalm 51:5-7

“’Come now, and let us reason together,’ says the Lord, ‘though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow, though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.” Isaiah 1:18

“And we have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us.  God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.  By this, love is perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the Day of Judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world.” I John 4:17

“—on judgement day we will come into the presence of God cowering, and fearful, dreading the encounter, but humbly, boldly and confidently.  Why?  John says that the full extent of the love of God for us is expressed in the fact that ‘in this world, we are like Him’.  We will stand in the presence of the Father as pure and righteous as the Lord Jesus Christ, and as the Father would welcome the Son, so He will welcome you and me.”*

We are not capable of understand the awesome capability our Father-God has in forgiving us of our sins and choosing to not recall them again.  We are, as the Bible says, NEW creatures in Christ!  What an amazing and loving way He has!  It is up to us to trust His truth and rest in His Word!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

All Gone!

“Now it came about when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, ‘This is what your slave did to me,’ that his anger burned.  So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the jail, the place where the kings’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.  But the Lord was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favour in the sight of the chief jailer.”  Genesis 39:19-21

“And he restored the chief cupbearer to his office, and he put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand; but he handed the chief baker, just as Joseph had interpreted to them.  Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.”  Genesis 40:21-23

“Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream, -- Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, ‘I would make mention today of my own offenses. – Now a Hebrew youth was with us there, a servant of the captain of the bodyguard, and we related them to him, and he interpreted our dreams for us.  To each one he interpreted according to his own dream.  And it came about that just as he interpreted for us,” Genesis 41:1, 12-13

Today, there IS no condemnation, and God has NOTHING against me.  The conflict is over, the guilt has been taken away, and we are not condemned.  Remember, that whenever, as a Christian we feel condemned it is Satanic in origin and not of God.  In this area, Satan must be resisted.”*

Once we offer our lives to the Lord and accept His gift of eternal life, we are also free to take advantage of God’s amazing grace.  We can live our lives as we if we are not His children.  Our hearts will always be heavy because He came to set us free for a reason - to be His witnesses in a dark and lost world -- a world where evil compromises good.

Joseph was innocent, and must have grown discouraged, yet he did not waver or wonder...he trusted.  One of Satan’s greatest tricks is to keep us lost in guilt for past sins.  Have you memorised the powerful promise of Romans 8:1, yet?  Today would be a good day to do so.
