Monotony of the Bible

“Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten.  And they buried him in the territory his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephriam, north of Mount Gaash.

“And all the generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel.

“Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals, and they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them, thus they provoked the Lord to anger.” Judges 2:8-12

The Bible can become monotonous and repetitive if you pay attention to patterns that play over and over again in it.  Sort of like our own personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and the reason we must rely upon grace with a surprised heart.

Just when the struggle to be a disciple no longer seems worth it, we can remember:  “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

Weekend Challenge

“Now the angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim.  And he said, ‘I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you, and as for you, you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’  But you have no obeyed Me; what is this you have done?

“’Therefore, I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall become as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.’  And it came about when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept.” Judges 2:1-4

Joshua has died and the Israelites inquire of the Lord as to what next.  They are told, yet fail to observe His mandate.  What follows is a heap of failures:  Judah, Simeon, Benjamin, Joseph, Zebulun, Asher, Napthali, Dan…well you get the picture.  They all thought they would do their own thing and that meant a lots of “insignificant” disobediences.

Obedience is difficult, especially when wheeling and dealing for neat stuff, politics and opinions of what is a better idea, get in the way.  God has a plan for His people and it will prevail, no matter how clever we think we are.

CHALLENGE:  This weekend consider the many who are now homeless from hurricanes, floods and earthquakes.  Pray for them and those who are helping and consider how God may wish to use you in these disasters (there are two good ideas in the prayer list if you have no other ideas!)

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene
