Sin Foundations - Protective Deceit

"But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.  Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, 'What is this you have done to me?  Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?  Why did you say, 'She is my sister, so that I took her for my wife?  Now then, here is your wife, take her and go.'  And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they escorted him away, with his wife and all that belonged to him." Genesis 12:17-20

Two things here to consider:  God wanted Abram to obey and trust Him and not be in Egypt enjoying himself.  Since Abram was so "comfortable" enjoying the luxury his deceit had brought him, even knowing he had betrayed his wife, it was difficult to motivate him to move on and then there was the issue of Sarai, who did obey her husband and was compromised.  Abraham would not leave such comfort even though it must have been stressful for him, but still a self-satisfying result.

Most important of all in their weakness their testimony of the power and trusworthiness of Jehovah was compromised to all who knew them (family, friends, servants) and all of Egypt starting with Pharoah.

"Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.  Therefore let him who things he stands take heed lest he fall.  No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it." I Corinthians 10:11-13

Sin Foundations - Selfish Lies

"And it came about when he [Abram] came near to Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, 'See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman; and it will come about when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, 'This is his wife; and they will kill me, but they will let you live.  Please say that you are my sister so that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live on account of you.'

"And it came about when Abram came into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.  and Pharaoh's officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.  Therefore he treated Abram well for her sake; and gave him sheep and oxen and donkeys and male and female servants and female donkeys and camels." Genesis 12:11-16

God had just promised Abram all the land he could walk on and that he would be blessed in more ways than he could imagine.  A famine occurs, he's hungry and wanders away from the land he was just led to; and now he convinces his wife to support his lies so he can get wealthy and protect himself.  Either God is God or He is just a concept.  Either His Word is trustworthy and worth reading or we might as well go read comic books (do they still make comic books!)

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Egypt

"And Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh.  Now the Canaanite was then in the land.  And the Lord appeared to Abram and said, 'To your descendants I will give this land.'  So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.

"Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord.  And Abram journeyed on, continuing toward the Negev.

"Now there was a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land."  Genesis 12:6-10

God has just spoken the Abrahamic Covenant of purpose (Genesis 12:1-3) and even after hearing this, Abram took Lot and Sarai began to travel around the lands searching for relief from the famine.  Egypt was not forbidden and certainly would have been tempting.  With the drought, this was a place to survive, perhaps thrive.

However. all indications are that Abram did not stop to consider his direction away from Canaan.  He did take everything into account but the promise of God and moved quickly from faith to fear.  Here at the first touch of hunger, fear and the hope of riches; the vision of God's promise was lost and the whole enterprise waylaid temporarily...it would take plagues to restore Sarai to her destiny and deportation to get Abram back to Canaan.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Review 2

"Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our afflictions so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

"For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.  But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer, and our hope for you is firmly grounded knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers in our comfort."  II Corinthians 1:2-7

In the previous devotions we have seen the first mention of many of the foundations of sin we all deal with, including hero worship, drunkenness, resentment, tattling, cursing, discrimination, erecting borders, demonstration of unity in defiance of our heavenly Father.

All these things are here to remind us again and again of the deceitfulness of our hearts and how dependent we remain on the Grace of His love and the amazing gift of Jesus Christ's salvation through His death for us.  Enjoy your weekend and keep praying!

Sin Foundations - All Together Now...

"Now then, hear this, you sensual one who dwells securely, who say in your heart, 'I am and there is no one beside me, I shall not sit as a widow, nor shall I know loss of children.'  But these two things shall come on you suddenly in one day:  loss of children and widowhood.  They shall come on you in full measure in spite of your many sorceries, in spite of the great power of your spells.

"And you felt secure in your wickedness and said, 'No one sees me,; your wisdom and your knowledge, they have deluded you; for you have said there is no one besides me' but evil will come on you which you will not know how to charm away, and disaster will fall on you for which you cannot atone, and destruction about which you do not know will come on you suddenly."  Isaiah 47:8-13

What could be wrong with people cooperating and collaborating to build something together?  Read this again and see what you see:

"And they said to one another, 'Come let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name; lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth. -- And the Lord said, 'Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language.  And THIS is what they began to do..." Genesis 11:4, 6a

The attitude of the heart here was not healthy!  They built a city for their own glory and power.  It increasingly came to symbolise the godless society.  Babylon, the great, mysterious and filled with evil.  Babylon, with its pretensions, persecutions (Daniel 3), pleasures, sins and superstitions, its riches and eventual doom (Revelation 17 & 18).

God saw sadly, that division and confusion of language would work to save some from apostasy.  Peace and unity (we are all one with the Creator and Creation) are not healthy goals, they are not God-focused goals, even though they are naturally attractive to us.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Defiance

"And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.  And the Lord said, 'Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language.  And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.  Come let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.'

"So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.  Therefore its name was called Babel; because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth." Genesis 11:5-9

Nimrod was the son of Canaan, the son of Ham, the son of defiance and resentment who bore the curse of God for his father's act of spite.   Nimrod was a hunter, and by some accounts was a leader of great ambition and evil desires, perhaps to vindicate himself and his father in the eyes of the world.  He gathered the nations together to build a tower to the heavens in an effort, not to escape a future flood, but to defy the Lord's express command to scatter and populate the earth.  Yet, God knows His plan and here worked to "nudge" progress.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Collaborative Demonstration

"Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words.  And it came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.  And they said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.'  And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

"And they said, 'Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name; lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.'" Genesis 11:1-4

The bricks and mortar, the collaborative building, the desire to show God how they did not need Him...all worked together as the first instance of image-consciousness, vanity; and a bit of advertising and branding thrown in to bedazzle God so they could get on with their success story.  Together, perhaps under the leadership of Nimrod, their differences were leveraged for, not the greater good, but to impress and memorialise their greatness and power.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sin Foundations - Borders

"And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calnea, in the land of Shinar.  From that land he went forth into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, and Resen between Ninevey and Calah; that is the great city." Genesis 10:10-12

"And the territory of the Canaanite extended from Sidon s you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zebolim, as far as Lasha."  Genesis 10:19-20

"Now their settlement extended from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the hill country of the east." Genesis 10:30

Borders divide and demark the extend of a land.  Every land has different resources.  Each of these families had different tasks and strengths and professions.  First they focused on their own strengths and developed their lands.  Then they began to look around.

Sin Foundations - Geographic Division

"From these the coastlands of the nations were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.  And the sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan.

"Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the earth.  He was a mightly hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, 'Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.'  And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

"From that land he went forth into Assyria, and built Nineva and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. -- And the territory of the Caananite extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go towerd Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zebolin, as far as Lasha.  these are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations." Genesis 10:5-6, 8-12, 19-20

This passage is actually seen to have been written after the Tower of Babel dispersion and amazingly enough (don't you just LOVE God for His attention to detail in His Word!!?) Genesis 10 is seen a most "remarkably accurate historical document.  There is no comparable catalogue of ancient nations available from any other source.  It is unparalleled in its antiquity and comprehensiveness."

Dr. William F. Albright (non-believer) said, "It stands absolutely alone in ancient literature, without a remote parallel, even among the Greeks, where we find the closest approach to a distribution of peoples in genealogical framework...The Table of Nations remains an astonishingly accurate document." (Recent Discoveries in Bible Lands, article appended to Robert Young's, Analytical Concordance to the Bible (New York:  Funk and Wagnallis, 1936), p.25.

Once they were divided, they could compare.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene
