Our Example!

“For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:14-15

“In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,” Hebrews 5:7-9

“We can never fully plumb the mystery of what took place on the Cross, but it does offer the consolation that God is unwilling to put His creatures through any test that He Himself has not endured. I have spoken with many suffering people over the years and I cannot emphasize too strongly how important this fact seems to them. From famous people like Joni Eareckson Tads, from unknowns in county hospitals, from inmates in hellish Third World prisons, I have heard something like this: ‘At least, because of Jesus, God understands how I feel.’”*

You have not given your life for your principles and beliefs in the Lord and yet He gave His life for you, because His love for you is so great He choose death rather than to live without you!

Take care with love, especially His! Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Conditional Faith?

“Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:10-13

“I admit, it is hard for any of us with out limited vision to perceive the ‘reward’ gained by Job’s trials. C.X. Lewis may have come close in his comment about God sending us to ‘far more desperate poste in the great battle.’ According to the Bible, human beings serve as the principal food soldiers in the warfare between unseen forces of good and evil; and faith is our most powerful weapon. Perhaps God sends us to dangerous posts with the same mixture of pride, love, anguish, and remorse that any parent feels when sending a son or daughter off to war.”*

“’If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.’” Daniel 3:17-18

Faith can’t be conditional faith when our Father offers each of us unconditional love!

Does God Need?

“And He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eated from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ And the man said, ‘The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate,’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done.’ And the woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate.’” Genesis 3:11-13

“Then Jesus therefore said to them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead, and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.’ – Martha therefore said to Jesus, ‘Lord if You had been here, my brother would not have died. Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.’

‘Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, ‘Lord, if You had been here my brother would not have died.’ John 11:14-14, 21-22, 32

“It is wrong to speak of God’s need of love from His creation, but remember how God Himself expressed His longing for that love: like a father starved for some response, any response, from his rebellious children; like a jilted lover who, against all reason, gives his faithless beloved one more chance.

“The deepest longings we feel on earth, as parents, as lovers, are mete flickers of the hungering desire God feels for us. It is desire that cost Him the Incarnation and the Crucifixion.”*

It is easy to blame God and to fail to appreciate how very much He loves us, especially when things aren’t going well, yet He longs for us, like a Father does, to come into His arms and admit our need and love for Him.

Take care with love, especially His! Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Two Observations - Part 1

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.; And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

“Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die.’” Genesis 1:26-27, 2:15-17

“We have little comprehension of what our faith means to God. In some mysterious way, Job’s terrible ordeal was ‘worth’ it to God because it went to the core of the entire human experiment. More than Job’s faith, the motive behind all creation was at stake. Ever since God took the ‘risk’ of making room for free human beings, faith – true, unbribed, freely offered faith – has had an intrinsic value to God that we can barely imagine. There is no better way for us to express love to God than by exercising fidelity to Him.*”

“But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us. And Jesus said to him, ‘If You can!’ All things are possible to him who believes. Immediately the boy’s father cried out and began saying, ‘I do believe; help my unbelief.’” Mark 9:22b-24

Early Miracles

“O God, Thou art my God; I shall seek Thee earnestly; my soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Thus I have beheld Thee in the sanctuary, to see Thy power and Thy glory. Because Thy loving kindness is better than life, my lips will praise Thee. So I will bless Thee as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Thy name. My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth offers praise with joyful lips. When I remember Thee on my bed, I meditate on Thee in the night watches, for Thou hast been my help, and in the shadow of Thy wings I sing for joy, my soul clings to Thee; Thy right hand upholds me.” Psalm 63:1-8

“In an essay on prayer [The World’s Last Night], C.S. Lewis suggested that God treats new Christians with a special kind of tenderness much as a parent dotes on a newborn. He quotes an experienced Christian: ‘I have seen many striking answers to prayer and more than one that I thought miraculous. But they usually come at the beginning before conversion, or soon after it. As the Christian life proceeds, they tend to be rarer. The refusals, too, are not only more frequent; they become more unmistakable, more emphatic.’”

Perhaps what also happens is that over time Christians are so weary they cannot lift their heads to look up. Let us all pray that the Lord will restore to each of us, the first joy of our salvation and give us those “new” eyes again to see Him there.

Contradiction to Faith

"Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, ‘Abraham!” And he said, ‘Here I am.’ And He said, ‘Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah; and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.’” Genesis 22:1-2

“The deepest faith, what I have called fidelity, sprouts at a point of contradiction, like a blade of grass between stones. Human beings grow by striving, working, stretching; and in a sense, human nature needs problems more than solutions. Why are not all prayers answered magically and instantly? Why must every convert travel the same tedious path of [personal] spiritual discipline? Because persistent prayer, and fasting, and study, and meditation are designed primarily for our sakes, not for God’s”

“So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.” Genesis 22:3

Can you imagine how long that night was that Abraham had to wait through? Can you imagine how Abraham might have wrestled with his confusion, resentment, fear to faith that took action? There is a way that seems right to man, but God loves us and has a plan for our lives that far exceeds anything we can imagine!

Elastic Faith

“Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, Thou arth there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Thy hand will lead me, and Thy right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night.’ Even the darkness is not dark to Thee, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to Thee.” Psalm 139:7-12

“My friend Richard found the word ‘faith’ a central obstacle to belief: ‘Just have faith,’ other Christians would counsel when he doubted. What did they mean? ‘Faith’ seemed to him a method of avoiding questions, not of answering them.

“Some of the difficulty comes, I think, from the elastic way in which we use the word. First we use it to describe great, childlike gulps of faith when a person swallows the impossible; the other is ‘fidelity’ for that hand-on-at-any-cost faith.”*

In the brightest day and the deepest darkness, God is with us. Whether we have huge faith or faith the size of a mustard seed, that is all we need to remember, at the very least, His gracious sacrifice for sinners such as I am!

Faith Guarantee?

“And the Lord said, ‘Do you have good reason to be angry?’ Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of it. There he made a shelter for himself and sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city. So the Lord God appointed a plant and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. And Jonah was extremely happy about the plant.

“But God appointed a worm when dawn came the next day, and it attacked the plant and it withered. And it came about when the sun came up that God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint and begged with all his soul to die, saying, ‘Death is better to me than life.’

“Then God said to Johan, ‘Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?’ And he said, ‘I have good reason to be angry, even to death.’

“Then the Lord said, ‘You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work, and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight. And should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals?’” Jonah 4:4-11

“As Paul Tournier said, ‘Where there is no longer any opportunity for doubt, there is no longer any opportunity for faith either.’ Faith demands uncertainty, confusion. The Bible includes many proofs of God’s concern – some quite spectacular – but no guarantees. A guarantee would after all, preclude faith.” *

God is not unaware of every little detail, nothing misses His watchful and compassionate eye. His grace extends even when we choose not to see it!

Fog Survivors

“And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” II Corinthians 12:9-10

“’Survivors of the Fog’, for many of the heroes listed (in Hebrews 11) have one common experience: a dread time of testing like Job’s, a time when the fog descends and everything goes blank. Torture, jeers, floggings, chains, stoning, sawings in two – Hebrews records in grim detail the trials that may befall faith-full people.

“Saints become saints by somehow hanging on to the stubborn conviction that things are not as they appear and that the unseen world is as solid and trustworthy as the visible world around them. God deserves trust even when it looks like the world is caving in.” *

“Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armour of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:10- 13

Is This a Fog?

“And Jesus said to him, ‘If You can! All things are possible to him who believes.’ Immediately the boy’s father cried out and began saying, I do believe, help my unbelief.’” Mark 9:23-24

“And Jesus answered and said, ‘O unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you?’

“And He said to them, ‘Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it shall move, and nothing shall be impossible to you.’” Matthew 17:17, 20

“Job stands as merely the most extreme example of what appears to be a universal law of faith. The kind of faith God values seems to develop best when everything fuzzes over, when God stays silent, when the fog rolls in.” *

Notice how it always seems to be the darkest before the dawn? That’s when we are surrounded by the “fog of disbelief”. They say a marathon is won in the last mile, when it seems too much to continue. Perhaps at times, that is also how our faith is? Trusting the Father is the key.

Trust again ? !

“Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, ‘O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire/ and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.’” Daniel 3:16-18

“Faith means believing in advance what will only make sense in reverse. I have a friend who bristles at such a definition of faith: ‘You never blame God for the bad things and yet you give Him credit for the good things!’

In a curious sort of way, my friend is right. That, I believe, is also what faith sometimes requires: trusting God when there is no apparent evidence of Him – as Job did. Trusting in His ultimate goodness, a goodness that exists outside of time, a goodness that time has not yet caught up with.” *

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

“We are assured and KNOW that, God being a partner in our labour, that all things work together and are fitting into a plan for good to those who love God and are called according to His design and purpose.” [Amplified]

“For I know the thoughts and plns that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace, and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.” Jeremiah 29:11 [Amplified]

All things, Father?

“And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groaning too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

“And we KNOW that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For Whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become confirmed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren; and whom He predestined, these He also called and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.” Romans 8:26-30

“We remain ignorant of many details, not because God enjoys keeping us in the dark, but because we have not the facilities to absorb so much light. – Not until history has run its course will we understand how ‘all things work together for good.’*

The Bible tells us mysteries and like a child who can barely read, we sit in the Father’s lap and let Him show us through the Book, as we are ready for the lessons. We can always wiggle or rest in His loving arms and trust that if He loved us enough to sacrifice His own Son for us so we COULD rest in his care, we can be at peace in the midst of anything. It is our choice really, isn’t it?

Fairness IN Time!

“Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.

“For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. When I was a child, I used to speak as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face-to-face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known. But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” I Corinthians 13:8-13

“Can we live NOW ‘as if’ God is loving, gracious, merciful, and all-powerful, even while the blinders of time are obscuring our vision? – I believe there is no other answer to the question of unfairness. No matter how we rationalise, God will sometimes SEEM unfair from the perspective of a person trapped in time. Only at the END of time, after we have attained God’s level of viewing – after every evil has been punished or forgiven, every illness healed, and the entire universe restored – only THEN will fairness reign.”*

Time Again

"There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven – A time to give birth, and a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build up. A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance.

“A time to throw stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to shun embracing. A time to search, and a time to give up as lost; a time to keep, and a time to throw away. A time to tear apart, and a time to sew together. A time to be silent, and a time to speak. A time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

“We perceive time in something like a never-ending present. True, we experience it in sequence – morning happens, then afternoon, then evening – but we do all our thinking in the present. If I think about the breakfast I ate earlier this morning, I think in the present about what happened in the past. If I contemplate dinner this evening, I think in the present about what will happen in the future. Because I only exist in the present, I can only perceive the past and the future from the perspective of the present. That insight gives a slight glimpse into the eternal present from which God sees the world.

“There is a danger in focusing to myopically on what we want God to do on our behalf; we may miss the significance of what He has already done.” *

We have only today: “This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24). Determinedly striving and demanding answers is like chaff in the wind. Resting in His arms brings peace. Enjoy your weekend my friends.

What Time?

“O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth, who has displayed Thy splendour above the heavens! -- When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained; what IS man that Thou dost take thought of him? And the son of man, that Thou dost care for him? Yet Thou has made him a little lower than God, and dost crown him with glory and majesty! Thou dost make him to rule over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet. – O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth!” Psalm 8 – various

“But – and this may be the main message underlying God’s vigorous speech to Job – we cannot apply our simplistic rules to God. The very word foreknowledge betrays the problem, for it expresses B-follows-A – and this concept is from the viewpoint of someone trapped inside time. Strictly speaking, God does not ‘foresee’ us doing things. He simply sees us doing them, in an eternal present, and whenever we try to figure out God’s role in any given event, we necessarily see things ‘from below,’ judging His behaviour by the frail standards of a time-contingent morality.” *

How presumptuous to imagine we can imagine the mind of God! It is difficult enough to just trust He is who He says He is!

Time to Trust?

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.” Genesis 1:1-5

“All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it. – There was the true light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.” John 1:1-2, 9

“The perception of time, especially, points up the huge difference between God’s perspective (the view from above) and ours, and I have come to believe that this difference accounts for many of our unanswered questions on disappointment with God.

“St. Augustine wrote: ‘What then, is time? he begins. ‘If no one asks me, I know; if I want to explain it to someone who does ask me, I do not know.’ When asked, ‘What was God doing before creation?’ Augustine responded that since God invented time along with the created world, such a question is nonsense, and merely betrays the time-bound perspective of the questioner.” *

God created order out of nothing. Part of this order has been “categorised” by man as time: minutes, hours, months, years, etc. Man “marks” time; and marks God’s activities against these marks. Yet, for God, time exists as part of His mystery.

Trust is created out of our perception of time in relation to our relationship with the Father.
