Beginning

“’For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be SAVED through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the Light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light; for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who practices the Truth come to the Light, that his deeds may be manifested as having be wrought in God.’” John 3:16-21

Most miss the fact that these verses were said by Jesus Himself...not someone speaking about what He said -- He said it. Read it...and start the New Year with His hope and love and forgiveness. There is no other way...

Night Before

“For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the wishing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For that good that I wish, I do not do; but I practice the very evil that I do not wish. But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good. For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 7:18-8:2

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. For we are HIS workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that HE loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (complete, full payment) for our sins.” I John 4:10

Simple verses, yet trying to think of something to end the year with, they seemed right. I pray God will continue to keep you alert through His Word and Spirit for the Work He has prepared for you for the New Year.

Past

“There is an appropriate time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven – a time to give birth, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build up, a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. A time to throw stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to shun embracing. A time to search, and a time to give up as lost; a time to keep, and a time to throw away. A time to tear apart, and a time to sew together; a time to be silent, and a time to speak. A time to love, and a time to hate.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Just read those eight verses…think about which ONE of them speaks to your heart as the year is ending and a new one is to begin. God has given us 2008, another year with many living lessons that make us who we are today for Him tomorrow.

Slate

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might He increases power. Though youths grow weary and tired, and vigorous you men stumble badly, yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not bet tired, they will walk and not become weary.” Isaiah 40:28-31

When I was five, we moved into a huge brick mansion (it was just a big house). One day, exploring in the front yard, I found a large, strange shaped, flat piece of dark gray stone. I took it to my Daddy and he told me it was a slate tile that had fallen from our roof. He took a stone from the ground, handed it to me and said. “Here, use this stone to make your letter A. I did, and there it was on the slate. “Now, make as many letters as you like.” I looked up to him when I had filled it and was a bit disappointed because there was no space left. He handed me his clean hankie, wet from the nearby dog’s bowl. “Wipe this over the slate,” he said. It turned dark when I did, but all the letters disappeared. It is sort of like the end of every year. We get to wipe the slate clean and start fresh again.

Making A List

“’Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.’” Luke 10:20

“’And this Gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a witness to all the nations, and then the end shall come.’” Matthew 24:14

“Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:19-20

James Kennedy used an illustration for people who were sure they had lived their lives “mostly good”. He would ask, “If you are making scrambled eggs and all the eggs are good but one, what would the result be?” It is not about the list, you know, it is about the Gift. (See tomorrow)

He's Coming!

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them. Thou shalt multiply the nation, Thou shalt increase their gladness; as with the gladness of harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For Thou shalt break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian. For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, the cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire. For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

We walked in darkness, yet were called out of that pitch blackness or subtle grey into His light – the true and lasting Light that illuminates our lives, Jesus, the Saviour of the world, if they will only turn to Him and accept His true and faithful gift of love and hope.

Endings - New Beginnings

“’I, Jesus have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star.’ And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost. I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book; if any one adds to them, God shall add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Tree of Life and from the Holy City, which are written in this book. He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly.’ Amen. Come Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all God’s people. Amen.” Revelation 22:16-21

At the end of God’s Word, we are challenged to remember that this is not all there is...that there is tomorrow until eternity and then beyond in His care. I am thirsty and I hope these “ending” have made you thirstier than ever before.

Endings - Are We There Yet?

“But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, that they were saying to you, ‘In the last time, there shall be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.’ These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit. But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith; praying in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. And have mercy on some, who are doubting; save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh. Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority before all time and now and forever. Amen” Jude 17-25

So very much here as we near the end of the New Testament from the end passages. This one is so rich, you may wish to print it out and carry it with you this weekend and just meditate on it.

Endings - Conterfeit?

“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds. Having many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that your joy may be made full. The children of your chosen sister greet you.” II John 10-13

There are many ways to communicate and the most effective seems to be face-to-face, because God created a way for us to “read” each other with the help of the Holy Spirit. However, when in doubt, always remember, there is your opinion, their opinion and then there is the Truth. Seek His Truth.

Endings - True Truth

“We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding, in order that we might know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. Little children guard yourselves from idols.” I John 5:18-21

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry.” II Timothy 4:3-5

I had a wonderful chat with an old friend in the States yesterday and the topic of what’s gone wrong in America came up. We considered many things, but concluded some generalities: they have exchanged the true Truth for a lie of the idols of instant gratification, competition, preoccupation with things and self, and no time for family. Tony Compolo wrote about it perfectly in his book, “Who Switched the Price Tags?”

Endings - Say and Do

“Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Lord to be salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard, lest, being carried away by the error of unprincipled men, you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” II Peter 3:14-18

Others, whether adults or children, hear what you say, but they learn from what you do. In this closing part of II Peter, we see this lesson: Paul sets an example for Peter in his letters; others, who as Jesus said, make His Word invalid by their own traditions and lead others astray; and Christ who is our ultimate example of living the Word.

“...’And thus you invalidate the Word of God for the sake of your tradition.’” Matthew 15:6b

Endings - Stand & Rest!

“And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. To Him be dominion forever and ever amen. Through Silvanus, of faithful brother (for so I regard him), I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark. Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ.” I Peter 5:10-14

When you are growing through difficult times, sometimes you can feel like the pain and difficulty will never end. But stop for a moment and consider the wonders of Christ’s love for you and the eternity you are promised, it can help you keep things in perspective so you can stand and rest – but sometimes it is not easy and your brothers and sisters in Christ are there to help you through it.

“’All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your soul. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.’” Matthew 11:27-30

Endings - Providence

“My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins.” James 5:19-20

“If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.” I John 1:8-10

According to J.I. Packer, providence is “the increasing activity of the Creator who in overflowing bounty and good will, upholds His creatures in ordered existence, guides and governs all events, circumstances and free acts of angels and men; and directs everything to its appointed goal, for His own glory”. According to Jerry Bridges: “His constant care for and His absolute rule over all His creation for His own glory and the good of His people”. So we know He is watching over us and all that is happening is in His hands...now that is a miracle!

Endings - Closeness

“But I urge you, brethren, bear with this word of exhortation, for I have written to your briefly. Take notice that our brother Timothy has been released, with whom, if he comes soon, I shall see you. Greet all of your leaders and all the saints. Those from Italy greet you. Grace be with you all.” Hebrews 13:22-25

Hebrews is a rather unique book in the New Testament; no one can confirm who wrote it (some have even suggested a woman!), where it was written, the date it was written or even to whom it was written. Despite all of this it was included and we have some of the most beautiful verses. We learn about how much better faith in Christ is over all other systems of religion. We learn about the power of the Word itself and what faith is. Most of all we learn a new intimacy with our Father God because He understands us from the inside out.

“For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sim. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16

Endings - Shall Be Given

“Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, since I know that you will do even more than what I say. And at the same time also prepare me a lodging; for I hope that through your prayers I shall be given to you. Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow workers. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.” Philemon 21-25

Today, I called home to speak with Barb, my sister-in-law (closer than a sister), to comfort her as she was made redundant from the only job she’s ever had in a company she’s faithfully served for 33 years. We were both in shock that this happened, but strange when you are a Christian, you CAN find the Lord’s hand even in the most frightening of circumstances. Please pray for Barb and Tim with me.

“And we KNOW that God Causes ALL things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

“’For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29 11-13

Endings - Address Book

“When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. And let our people also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, that they may not be unfruitful. All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.” Titus 3:12-15

Progressing through Paul’s letters is like reading his address book for his friends. Each an individual, all helped him in his ministry in one way or another and he never forgot them...and neither should we forget those who are in our lives.

Endings - Individual Gifts

“Greet Prisca and Aquila and the household of Onesiphoris. Erastus remained at Coringth, but Trophimus I left sick at Miletus. Make every effort to come before winger. Eubulus greets you, also Purdens and Lineus and Claudia and all the brethren. The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.” II Timothy 4:19-22

Even in Paul’s reportedly last letter, he remembers those in his life who aided his vision, his cause and him as an individual. Today, think about those special people in your life. They are there by design, not chance. Thank your Father for each of them. Oh and enjoy the weekend.

Endings - Tickling "truth"

“Instruct those who are rich in the present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with ll things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is live indeed. O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called ‘knowledge’ – which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith. Grace be with you.” I Timothy 6:17-21

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away their ears from the Truth, and will turn aside to myths.” II Timothy 4:3-4

Ever notice how we are capable of molding information to fit our concept of what is correct. One thing I learned early on is that there is your opinion, my opinion and then God’s Truth. Only the One is reliable.

Endings - God's Brand

“Now may the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance. The Lord be with you all! I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand, and this is a distinguishing mark in every letter, this is the way I write. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.” II Thessalonians 3:16-18

“The steadfast of mind Thou will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in Thee. Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock.” Isaiah 26:3

“’Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let no your heart be troubled, not let it be fearful.’” John 14:27

“Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him.” Job 12:15

Buddy and Susan bought me Jerry Bridges book, “Trusting God”. I thought I’d find just the perfect quote from there, but my book is so dog-eared and marked up I spent an hour just reading all the neat stuff I need to know all over again and feeling frustrated. A little slip of paper fell from the book; and there was the message: “A symbol is something -- often a picture of an object, that stands for something else.” Paul wrote in his own hand – a differentiating “brand” for his writings. God has a “brand” too and it is His peace in the heart of His children, no matter what is happening around them.

Endings - Written Treasure

“Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea and also Nympha and the church that is in her house. And when this letter is read among you, had it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and you, for your part read my letter that is coming from Laodicea. And say to Archippus, ‘Take head to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfil it.’ I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my imprisonment. Grace be with you.” Colossians 4:16-18

When you write something down, you leave a bit of you behind for others to share. In fact, one of the most precious treasures I have is letters from others: my Mom and Dad, my little brother and his wife; dear, dear special friends, people who I’ve worked with over the years. I save their written words to read again and again and savour the friendships and the lessons learned from them...and I remember their love and times we spent together. That is what God wants us to do with His wonderful Word to us.

Endings - Thank You & you

“And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in Glory in Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar’s household. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.” Philippians 4:19-23

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” 1:6

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labour for me; and I do not know which to choose.” 1:21-22

“For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” 2:13

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” 4:8

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” 4:13

Sometimes a holiday occurs when I’m in the middle of a series. I struggle to interrupt the series, but then God knew where I was to be today. Happy Thanksgiving – for me today - for you tomorrow. Endings - Friends

“But that you also may know about my circumstances, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make everything known to you. And I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts. Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with a love incorruptible.” Ephesians 6:21-24

True friends are rare and can grow to be as close as family sometimes. What a treasure that can be! No matter how long you live, no matter where you go or what you do, true friends are always there hoping for your best, sharing their lives and love with you. You see God knew we would all need family and friends to learn about dependence and independence. It is a life long journey; and always better shared with others.

Endings - Branding Scars

“But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And those who will walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.” Galatians 6:14-18

Do you have a scar somewhere on your body? Most of us do. Most times they’re from accidents. Yet even now, looking at the scar you may be able to remember the pain and events that led to it. I have a long scar on my index finger from when I was about eight and tried to open a glass Coke bottle that broke in my hand. First of all, I wasn’t supposed to have the Coke and second, I was trying to open the bottle in a wrong way.

The scar reminds me there’s always a reason to be obedient. What about your scar(s)? Do they remind you of something or mark a time in your life? Was there a lesson there for you that the scar helps you remember? Christ puts His mark in our hearts to remember Him and it helps others recognise us as a new creation.

“...always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body....Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away, behold, new things have come.” II Corinthians 4:10, 5:17

Endings - Tonic

“Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.” II Corinthians 13:11-14

A tonic is a medicine that increases strength, energy and general wellbeing. It refreshes and invigorates. Also the it’s the first note of a music scale that a “key” sound is based upon. It is also a way of producing tension, especially muscular tension – so think of biceps and triceps – you need both for proper coordinated movement. And here is a tonic in God’s Word.

Endings - Assignment: Personally...

“The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Prisca greet you heartily in the Lord with the church that is in their house. All the brethren greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. The greeting is in my own hand – Paul. If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. Maranatha. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.” I Corinthians 16:19-21

Reading these verses, got me thinking about the value of hand-writing personal notes to others. Assignment: think of just one person who needs encouragement. Write and mail them something meaningful. See how the Lord may use it in your and their lives... and let me know what happens, if you have a moment to share.

Endings - The Secret?

“Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen.” Romans 16:25-27

Six million copies of a book called, “The Secret” have been sold (probably more by now). It is about the law of attracting success and all good things to you and repelling bad things from you by the power of self-will and determination. Oprah loves it, and so many “celebrities/leaders” sing its praises – yet, the only true Secret is within one sacred Book, that has -- since its first printing -- sold more copies than all other books -- yet few read it. Could that be “the secret”?

Endings - Delayed?

“And when he had spoken these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.) And he [Paul] stayed two full years in his own rented quarters, and was welcoming all who came to him, preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.” Acts 28:29-31

“For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery lest you be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel UNTIL the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and thus all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, ‘The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.’ And this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins.’” Romans 11:25-27

I heard the most amazing sermon once about why God continues to delay His return. It was based on these two verses and explained that the “fullness of the Gentiles” was still to be realised.

Endings - Left Behind

“This is the disciple who bears witness of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his witness is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books which were written.” John 21:24-25

“For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard.” Acts 22:15

There are many ways to share the Good News of Christ’s gracious gift with others; one of them is writing. Writing can create a legacy gift for others. However, did you know that only about 7-10% of the books that are purchased are actually read? The Bible remains the most widely purchased, but may be less read than JK Rowlings, Ophre Winfrey, Stephen Covey or Dan Brown. If I was Satan that would please me a great deal. Sometimes people will write me to say that they don’t have time to read this short devotion and I worry about this but know God has a plan....

Endings With Loved Ones

“And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. And it came about that while He was blessing them, He parted from them. And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy and were continually in the temple praising God.” Luke 24:50-53

Bethany seemed a special place for Jesus. He had many friends there and was loved by many in that place; in contrast to other places He travelled through where He was not always welcome. Lazarus was there, living a new resurrected life; Mary and Martha were there, sisters who learned the value of serving and listening; Simon the leper lived there, healed and whole now, and another Mary lived there so shunned by others for her life of ill repute. All these Jesus loved and when He knew He had little time left, He went to Bethany for their unknowing support.

“Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. Mary therefore took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” John 12:1-3

Endings - Just A Little

“So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the Word by the sighs that followed.” Mark 16:19-20

“Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ And He said the them, ‘Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it shall move; and nothing shall be impossible to you.’” Matthew 17:19-20

God’s Word alone is powerful and just needs to be delivered. Ever struggle with memory verses? Yes, me too. The point is there is great and current wisdom in His Word; if we can casually or openly drop His Word into our conversation, He knows what He might accomplish with it in another’s heart.

“So shall my Word be which goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

Endings - Go!

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go Therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:18-20

There are many interesting, end of book “blessings” in the Bible. Here’s the first in the New Testament. We are to GO, not because we can, but because that is a COMMAND! We don’t have to GO anywhere in particular, we can go shopping, we can reach across a table in a cafe, we can go to the wilds of the darkest corner of His earth – anywhere individuals need to know more about God’s love. We can even use other ways to GO (such as this little daily e-mail) or writing a sweet little greeting card or calling someone who may need encouragement. And we NEVER go alone!

“How then shall they call upon Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring glad tidings of Good things!’” Romans 10:13-15

Word Worship

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said...” Genesis 1:1-2a

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” John 1:1-2

“’You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life.” John 5:39-40

I love God’s Word. Sometimes people misunderstand Christians who take time to study their Bible because it seems pointless in such a modern world. I mean, how COULD the Bible be relevant today? Yet, if you just read it you can see that God inspired men to write in such a way that His Word can point us to Him. But the Word is not God, it is the means to see Him and His provision of grace.

Word From A Friend

“God is our refuge & strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, & though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar & foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. – Come, behold the works of the Lord, who has wrought desolation in the earth. He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow & cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire. ‘Cease striving & know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’ The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.” Psalm 46:1-3, 8-11

Today I received an email from a friend wanting to encourage me during this time of challenge. Here is what it said: “Every home is not necessarily a community of love and service. And the workplace is not always a place of cooperating. Nor are all our relationships healing and encouraging. Therefore in the midst of life, we can feel lost and alienated.

“We therefore need to hear the call to come home, home to the Father's heart. God so much wants to give us a home, a sense of belonging, a place to live, a shelter where we feel protected and a place of safety in which we feel safe.

“This place of safety can be found in our world, but only in the place of prayer - a place of fellowship with the Father of all grace and consolation, who invites us to be with Him. It is there that we are truly at home. And it is from this centre that we seek to build families of joy and openness, church bodies of reconciliation, workplaces of productivity and partnership, and friendships that are not stifling, but are marked by servant-hood and reciprocity.”

What a miracle to be loved by a God who cares so much!! Thank you A.S.

Waiting is Difficult !

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might, He increases power. Though youths grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly, yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” Isaiah 40:28-31

Scott Peck said, life was difficult, but I think waiting is more difficult. Perhaps it is just what makes LIFE difficult. As Christians, many of us are the “can do” people, we want to take action, fix things, help, support, lend, give, do, sing, whatever it takes to get through something and especially get through it faster...most times it is the waiting and trusting we need to be doing, not the doing.

Abase & Abound

“Consider the work of God. For who is able to straighten what He has bent? In the day of prosperity be happy, but in the day of adversity consider – God has made the one as well as the other so that man may not discover anything that will be after him.” Ecclesiastes 7:113-14

“Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Nevertheless, you have done well to share with me in my affliction.” Philippians 4:11-15

Abase = to humiliate or degrade someone else or yourself. From a word meaning low.

Abound = to exist in large numbers, an abundance. From a word meaning overflow.

“’The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I come that they might have life, and might have it abundantly.’” John 10:10

He has a plan for your life. The big question is, will you trust Him or keep struggling?

Black & White - No Gray

“And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, ‘Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many is Israel, and for a sigh to be opposed – and a sword will pierce even your own soul – tho the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.’” Luke 2:34-35

You either love or hate Jesus. Although some say they are standing to the side to watch; with Jesus you are either with Him or you are against Him. There is no middle ground, no gray or no “no-decision land” to stand on. Everyone has the opportunity to make this decision and no one else can make the decision for another. Around you, right now, there are people trying to say they are still on the fence. Perhaps you are the one to help them over to His side?

“And Elijah came near to all the people and said, ‘How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal (another or no god is god to you) then follow him.” I Kings 18:21a

“’No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.’” Matthew 6:24

Tireless Effort

“For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. And since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let each exercise them accordingly....” Romans 12:4-6

“And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. So then while we have the opportunity, let us do go to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.” Galatians 6:9-10

”Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.” I Corinthians 15:58

Imagine being a honey bee. You go out every day to find nectar and gather as much as you can carry & fly back to the hive - many times from sunrise to sunset. And you do this every day of your life. If you had to work alone at this task, think about this: to make one pound of honey, one bee would have to fly 50,000 miles, more than twice the distance around the globe. A single teaspoon of honey in six weeks is a bee's entire lifetime. As a Christian, you must keep working faithfully, knowing your individual contribution is more important than you will ever know when combined with those around you. Don't give up.

Where is He now?

“’Is not God in the height of heaven? Look also at the distant stars, how high they are! And you say, ‘What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness? Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; and He walks on the vault of heaven.’” Job 22:12-14

“’Am I a God who is near,’ declares the Lord, ‘and not a God far off? Can a man hide himself in hiding places, so I do not see him?’ declares the Lord. ‘Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?’ declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:23-24

There is nothing like the story of Footprints in the Sand to remind us that even when we are sure the Lord is somewhere else, it is only because He is carrying us through some dark times and we can trust in Him to protect and guide us...it is our responsibility to simply relax and trust Him.

Father's Faithfulness

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” I Thessalonians 5:23-24

“God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” I Corinthians 1:9

Sometimes in your life you find yourself faced with a large situation where there seems no way to deal with it. That is a good time to stop and remember you are the child of the Lord. He will never ask you to do something you are not equipped to handle, no matter how insurmountable it may seem to be.

Which Way?

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17

“But flee from these things, you man of God; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” I Timothy 6:11-12

God’s Word is faithful to help us know how to live a life of righteousness. The word itself means the character or quality of being right or just"; it was formerly spelled "rightwiseness," (wonderful way of putting it); whatever is right or just in itself, whatever conforms to the revealed will of God. Righteousness is the sum total of the requirements of God. What better reason to look into His Word?

Course Correction

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the faith and correcting error, for re-setting the direction of a man’s life and training him in good living. The Scriptures are the comprehensive equipment of the man of God, and fit him fully for all branches of his work.” Philips – The New Testament in Modern English

“Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do; forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, Press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14

If you’ve ever been lost on a trip, sometimes you’re sure you’re going in the right direction, yet when you check the map you discover the truth. Checking the map is a bit like reading His love letter, the Bible. It helps us keep on His course.

Three Fingers

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the faith and correcting error, for re-setting the direction of a man’s life and training him in good living. The Scriptures are the comprehensive equipment of the man of God, and fit him fully for all branches of his work.” Philips – The New Testament in Modern English

“’And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.’” Matthew 7:1-5

Zig Ziglar teaches you should never point at another person because when you do although there may be one finger pointing away from you (toward another) there are three pointing back at you. How easy it is to see the error in someone else. Actually, it’s rather self-distracting to do that and helps you compare yourself against others and justify behaviours you know are not pleasing to Him. God sent His only Son to pay the price to save you and me personally. God’s Word helps us deal with the reality and attitude of our own heart and outward actions. We must read it and then choose to listen.

Teaching

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17

“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13

God would have us use our gifts and for those who are teachers there is no greater resource for our lessons than His Word.

"God breathed"

“Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another – showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.” The Message

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ...” Genesis 1:1-3

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the begging with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” John 1:1-3

“...for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” II Peter 1:21

God breathed! This word “theopneustos” is used only once in the New Testament. It is a combination of two words: “God” and “breath or spirit”. Every author of the Bible wrote with their distinguishing “style”; yet the words of the whole weave together with unimaginable clarity and harmony - a mystery as large as creation itself.

Unique Scripture

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the faith and correcting error, for re-setting the direction of a man’s life and training him in good living. The Scriptures are the comprehensive equipment of the man of God, and fit him fully for all branches of his work.” Philips – The New Testament in Modern English

“For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

The Bible is unique. It is the only book of such astounding harmony written over about 1500 years, by more than 40 authors of every walk of life, who lived in different places on three continents while in different moods and in three languages. It contains no less than 14 different literary styles to address hundreds of controversial subjects (marriage, business, character development, parenting, who God is and who we are, etc.); and from Genesis through Revelation is all about one central Character and theme. Neat isn’t it?!!

How Much Is All?

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17

“For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the Word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.” Hebrews 2:1-4

“ALL” for the WeakDay Devotions is the sixty-six books of the Bible as we know it today. These sixty-six books started as the KJV. The writing of the King James Version (the foundation of today’s translations and paraphrases) was commissioned by King James of England in 1603. Fifty-four of the greatest biblical scholars were brought together to use fifteen rules for their translation. They were divided into six groups, meeting separately. Two groups were responsible for the Old Testament, two for the New, the groups meeting at three universities. It took three years to complete and was released in 1611.

Thinking...

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.” The New Living Translation

“Every Scripture is God-breathed – given by His inspiration – and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, and for training in righteousness (that is, in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in through, propose and action), so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well-fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Amplified Translation

Wonder what that means? Humm. Well let’s look at it together this week. So today, perhaps you could print this out and just read the two verses and if you have a different translation, you may wish to write out your version and keep the paper with you so you can write your thoughts on it as you meditate on them.

Church Stumbling Block

“but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it is better for him that a heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!’” Matthew 18:1-7

As an author, sometimes people give me manuscripts to comment on. Recently the CEO of a large financial institution I’m doing some work for asked me if I would read his. Normally I do not, but when I realised the topic of his book, I couldn’t resist. He struggles with a stumbling block to his commitment to Christ. The working title is “Doubting Thomas, one man’s struggle with organised religion and its impact on world history”. His proofs are crushing my heart, to think the church has left this kind of historic record; and today is becoming too often a marketing exercise of completion and the latest and greatest gimmicks. One thing we did agree on is that most people have not read the Bible through, let alone enough, to see God’s plan for His Body of Believers.

“preach the Word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths.” II Timothy 4:2-4

Little Ones to Him Belong...

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, and said, ‘Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it is better for him that a heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!’” Matthew 18:1-7

“Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him Belong; they are weak and He is strong. Yes Jesus loves me! Yes Jesus loves me for the Bible tells me so!” I am not sure if I even remember all the words correctly (and I know someone will send me the right words if these are not remembered correctly) but the little song still plays perfectly in my head. When we come to Jesus the first time and after we are His child, we are to come as a child. This means to be humble, respectful and without defences, just as a child comes to a grown up.

“’Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.’” Matthew 11:28-29

One-Upmanship

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, and said, ‘Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!’” Matthew 18:1-7

God’s Word is so amazing! I found this passage this morning in my reading and it is simply packed with great stuff, so I may stay with this one for a few days. The first thing that is obvious in my first reading is competitiveness and how sometimes our competitiveness can lead us to be a stumbling block to others...and then ourselves. What a powerful passage to meditate upon.

I Promise Because/If...

“Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, ‘By Myself I have sword, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. And in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed because you have obeyed My voice.’” Genesis 22:15-18

Every promise in the Bible has a “because” or an “if”. A “because” when something has taken place or an “if” when something is required. God’s promises always have one or the other. So a promise like:

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

Note: Delighting comes before giving, which when done, changes the desires of your heart. In the Genesis quote, the promise is not just for Abraham (although he and his people took it to be), it is a “because” promise and is meant for ALL nations of the earth. Perhaps it is time to look more closely at promises?

Missing Bibles

“’Behold, days are coming,’ declares the Lord God, when I will send a famine of the land, not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing thw Words of the Lord. And people will stagger from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they will go to and fro to seek the Word of the Lord. But they will not find it.’” Amos 8:11-012

“As a deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’” Psalm 41:1-3

When I was a young Christian it was “fashionable” to focus on the End Times. One thing I knew was that the enemy would take our Bibles from us and then what would we do? So I began to write out entire books of the Bible and hide them in other books and in notebooks. Then from the Navigators I learned to systematically memorise God’s precious Word, so no one could take it from me. It is why I still try to spend quality time in His Word every day. Because today may be the day they come to take my Bibles. How about you?

Doubt Full?

“And all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing; but He does according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth; and no one can ward off His hand or say to Him, ‘What hast Thou done?’” Daniel 4:35

“But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. And when they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some were doubtful.” Matthew 28:16-17

I heard a sermon by Don Lanier (one of my spiritual parents, who was my leader in The Navigators). It ended with him crashing the passage in Matthew into each of our hearts. "AND some doubted,” he said, "and SOME doubted.....and some DOUBTED!" How could men and women who walked beside Jesus doubt Him? Why do some of us still doubt Him some of the time?

Changing & Remaining Constant

“Who is a God like Thee, who pardons iniquity and passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in unchanging love. He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” Micah 7:18-19

“’For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.‘” Malachi 3:6

“Nothing is constant in this world but change,” said a wise man one day and in our world it seems like this is true. All around us the whirlwind of turbulent technical, strategic, economic, geographic changes remind us of how delicate and transient this world and the people on it are. It is good our God cares about every individual with a love that passes all understanding.

Getting Grace

“Therefore, gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ." I Peter 1:13

“For by grace you have been saved through faith’ and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:2-3

Grace is a pure and simple gift from the Lord. Our understanding of grace comes from our exposure and understanding of the Lord through His Word. The purpose of grace is to demonstrate His workmanship in our hearts. It is what many find attractive about the Lord. He gives grace where and when it is needed, and it remains a mysterious component of our salvation.

Begin with the End

“’For just as the lightening comes from the east, and flashes even to the west, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.’” Matthew 24:27

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time, and now and forever. Amen.” Jude

There is an end to this...whatever it is that you are involved with or surrounded by, whether good or bad and you are not alone in your journey.

“’No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.’” Joshua 1:5

Switched Values

“Then Elisha said, ‘Listen to the Word of the Lord; thus says the Lord, ‘Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’ And the royal officer on whose hand the king was leaning answered the man of God and said, ‘Behold, if the Lord should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?’ Then he said, ‘Behold you shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.’” II Kings 7:1-2

This is the prelude to a very special story in the Bible about lepers and avoiding fears and finding unexpected treasure. Yet, these two verses have lots to teach us. First to always listen, not to men or the circumstances we see around us, but to God. That the worldly values we see are never reliable. And that we may see or be in high positions one moment, but our fate and lives are in the hands of the Lord. Isn’t God’s Word just amazing!!

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God abides forever.” I John 2:16-17

Claimed Verses

“And I searched for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.”

“And Elijah came near to all the people and said, ‘How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.’ But the people did not answer him a word.” I Kings 18:21

“And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’” Mark 1:17

“’If you abide in Me, and My Words abide in you, ask whatever you wish and it shall be done for you.’” John 15:7

During my lifetime with the Lord, I have claimed various verses to comfort me when I am feeling week. Here are four of mine. Do you have any? It might just be the day to remember them again.

Told You So

“And since neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small storm was assailing us, from then on all hope of our being saved was gradually abandoned; and when they had gone a long time without food, then Paul stood up in their midst and said, ‘Men you ought to have followed my advice and not to have set sail from Crete, and incurred this damage and loss. And yet now I urge you to keep up your courage, for there shall be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. For this very night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood before me, saying, ‘Do not be afraid Paul; you must stand before Caesar, and behold, God has granted you and all those who are sailing with you,’ therefore keep up your courage, men, for I believe God, that it will turn out exactly as I have been told.’” Acts 27:20-25

“—And thus it happened that they all were brought safely to land.” Acts 27:44b

I listen almost daily to the Bible on tape and enjoy the sounds of the many missionary journeys of Paul on ships. This passage would be one of my favourite. So many messages in it. Loss of hope, not eating from fear, listening to God in seemingly hopeless situations, testifying in hope, knowing God has a plan even in what seems a terrible situation… Any wonder we all love reading God’s Word?
