YouTube – The PURPOSE of GOD’S LAW – Romans 3:20

By – Ryan Rufus (1 min 43 sec)

“For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the books of the Law, to perform them.’

“Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, ‘The righteous man shall live by faith.’  However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, ‘He who practices them shall live by them.’

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us – for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’ – in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”  Galatians 3:10-14

God’s Law was carefully established by God for His chosen people.  It was detailed and specific.  It allowed the people then (as now) to see how they are unable to keep the laws and need to turn to Him for salvation.

Just think of it this way:  If I say to you, ‘Do not think of a pink elephant.’  Immediately, you do (Romans 3:19-20).

Law convicts everyone, no matter how righteous they might look, such as the pharisees who paraded around pointing fingers at ‘breakers of the law’.  But Jesus corrected them repeatedly, such as when He said:

“’Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you tithe mint and dill and cummin and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law:  justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.  You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!’” Matthew 23:23-24

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

Mercy Said No!

YouTube – Mercy Said No – The Ball Brothers

By – Christopher St. Clair (4 mins 41 sec)

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore.  Amen.”  Galatians 1:3-4

“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.  He will not always strive with us, nor will He keep His anger forever.  He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

“For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear him.  As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.  Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.  For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.” Psalm 103:6-14

In our journey as a Christian, we pick up encouraging gems along the way.  I write them in the front and back fly leaves of my Bible.  One that has been particularly important to my walk is this:

“Where is the foolish man who would think his personal filth is heavier than the grace of God?”[1]

We are sinners in God’s family, forgiven and saved by His amazing and gracious mercy -- despite our sinful nature and sinful acts no matter what they may be.  He saves us out of our sin.  This is compassion and love beyond our understanding.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

WeakEnd Assignment – Perfect Thorns

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOED1BnUANc

YouTube – What was Paul’s thorn in the flesh?

By – God Questions Ministries (3 min 20 sec)

“Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me – to keep me from exalting myself!

“Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me.  “And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’

“Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.  Therefore, I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” II Corinthians 12:7-10

Assignment

God’s Word is so amazing!  Did you ever wonder what Paul’s ‘thorn’ was?  Lots of ideas have been put forward but the Bible does not tell us.  I think this is so it is easier for us to identify with the idea.

Thorns are all different.  Some are long, some short, some different colours.  Some are easy to pull out and some stick around for a long time.  Some even have little barbs that work their way deeper into us.

Thorns sometimes even have a bit of poison in them that make us itch or spread pain or weakness throughout our systems, but so slowly we are rarely aware they are at work within us.

I’m convinced God has allowed each of us at least one ‘thorn’ in our lives…that hurts, that redirects us, that slows us down, that embarrasses us – some compromise our walk with the Lord and some strengthen our resolve to serve.  With every thorn, God provides grace to endure.

1.    Set aside an hour and find a place where you will not be interrupted and where you can watch and listen to the above video.

2.    Bring your Bible, notebook, something to write with and a refreshment.

3.    Quieten your heart and pray for the Lord to give you new insight of the value of your thorn(s) and His power to help you endure.

4.    Open your notebook to a fresh page and date it.  Then watch the video and as you watch, consider ‘thorns’ in your life and write down key points about thorns to help you identify your thorn(s).

5.    Review your notes and circle the ‘thorn(s)’ you have identified.  If there is more than one treat each one separately using the questions below.

NOTE:  If you have identified only one that is great.  In the future you may identify others.

6.    For each ‘thorn’ answer these questions:

a.     When did you notice the thorn?

b.    What are the negative effects of the thorn?

c.     What are the positive effects of the thorn?

d.    How often does it affect you?

e.     Is it something others could see?

f.     Has anyone ever pointed this thorn out to you?

g.    How has God used this thorn to strengthen your walk and service to Him?

7.    Pray and thank God that He loves you so much, He has selected the ‘perfect thorn’ for you.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)
