Duration or Amount?

“And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.  And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were frightened, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’  And they cried out for fear.  But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.’

“And Peter answered Him and said, ‘Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.’  And He said, ‘Come!’  And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.  But seeing the wind, he became afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, ‘Lord save me!’  And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt.’” Matthew 14:25-31

“If they [the disciples] were to place the little faith they did have in God, they would see God work!  On the few other occasions when Jesus rebuked the disciples for their ‘little faith’, it was never a reference to little quantity but that their faith was of little duration.

“Peter had trusted for a while, but when he began to look around and notice the wind and the circumstances he was in, he became afraid as the storm loomed larger in his reckoning than the power of the Lord Jesus Christ.”*

When circumstances whirl around us in massive chaos and our fear mounts; to survive, we must take the faith we have been given and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, the author and perfector of our lives.  No amount of squirming and flailing about or shouting or crying or running will matter nor will it change circumstances!  We just need to jump in the arms of the trustworthy and faithful Lord Jesus Christ, and rest there.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Quality or Quantity?

“And a certain centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die.  And when he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave.  And when they had come to Jesus, they earnestly entreated Him, saying, ‘He is worthy for You to grant this to him; for he loves our nation, and it was he who built us our synagogue.’

“Now Jesus started on His way with them; and when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, ‘Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.  For I, too, am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.’

“Now when Jesus heard this, He marvelled at him, and turned and said to the multitude that was following Him, ‘I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.’  And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.” Luke 17:2-10

“If the most important thing about faith is the object in which it is placed, then that actual quantity of the faith is secondary.  If you place a little faith in a strong object, the object will still function.  In other words, the Lord was saying that in asking a question like that, the disciples were showing that they did not really understand the nature of faith.  The all important thing is not the quantity of our faith, but the quality of the object in which our faith is going to be placed.  Small faith in a strong object will still enable that object to work.”*

When I went to Israel, I found a bookmark with a lamination sealing in a handful of mustard seeds.  The reason Jesus used this image is because a mustard seed is about the size of this period/full-stop.  Our faith just takes a tiny step...and He provides the ability for us to take that step by giving us the faith we need, because HE is powerful and compassionate beyond all reason!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

What's Impossible

“Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven and come, follow Me.’  But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieved; for he was one who owned much property.

“And Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.  And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.’  And when the disciples heart this, they were very astonished and said, ‘Then who can be saved?’  And looking up on them Jesus said to them, ‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”  Matthew 19:26

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

“It is not a case of failure to believe in Jesus Christ being the biggest sin, and hence Jesus’ promise that the Holy Spirit would convict the world of sin ‘because they do not believe in Me’, but it is the fact that anything at all which does not derive from dependence upon God is sin!  The thing that PLEASES God in our lives is the disposition towards Him that allows Him to be God and to work within us and through us.  That is why, ‘without faith it is impossible to please Him’.”*

The story about the rich young ruler was not about having wealth or being poor but about an attitude toward things that insulate us from the hand of the Father in our lives.  God owns the cattle on a thousand hills and in reality owns everything!  He can use wealth or poverty for His amazing purposes.  What He can’t do (and yes I know some eyebrows have risen) is force us to have faith in Him!  That He leaves to personal choice – His one vulnerability.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Give me more !

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.  For by it the men of old gained approval.  But faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the Word of God, so that what is seen was not make out of things which are visible.”  Hebrews 11:1-3

“Now faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ.” Romans 10:17

“’And the apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’  And the Lord said, ‘If you had faith like a mustard seen, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea; and it would obey you.’” Luke 17:5-6

“Many of us have prayed the simple prayer, ‘Lord, increase my faith’.  If you have ever prayed that, you are in good company for it is exactly the request the disciples of Jesus made to Him on one occasion.  However the response of the Lord probably surprised them as much as it may surprise you.”*

Faith requires belief.  Belief requires trust in what your faith is placed in.  In His wisdom the Father gives you the faith you need for the time you are going through.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Real Faith

“’Now if you are ready, at the moment you hear the sound of the horn, flute, lyre trigon, psaltery, and bagpipe, and all kinds of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, very well.  But if you will not worship, you will immediately be cast into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire; and what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?’

Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, ‘O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter.  If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king.  But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.’” Daniel 3:15-18

“Living by faith, therefore, is holding a disposition towards Jesus Christ that recognises His authority as Lord over me, and His enabling as my Life within me.  It has less to do with the nature of our activities as it has to do with their cause.”*

Now those three guys had faith...because they KNEW that God could save them from this terrible death, but they also remembered that He has a plan for them and they cannot assume that He will always do what they think is right or expedient, efficient or even economical....His plan is His plan and we need to exercise not faith, but trust in His plan.  Faith is ours as He has given it to us.  Tomorrow we will look at the truth of getting MORE faith or whether our faith is too weak!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Sitting in THE Chair

“And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

“For while we were still helpless at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will hardly die for a righteous man’ though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.  But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:3-8

“It is this failure to believe, failure to let Him work, which is the essence of sin.  When we are acting in independence of God, rather than in dependence upon God, even though the activity itself may be good and legitimate, we are actually committing sin!”*

Tomorrow we will look at what truly pleases God.  For today, consider the difference between believing in Christ as a chair -- and how looking at the chair, describing the chair, admiring the chair, worshiping the chair, telling others about the chair -- is worlds different from simply sitting in the Chair!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Belief?

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.  By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.” Hebrews 11:6

“If however, you are fulfilling the royal law, according to the Scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself,’ you are doing well.  But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.  For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.” James 2:9

[when it comes to aspirin] “What I am asking is, ‘If you have a headache, do you take aspirin and allow it to work on your behalf?’  Belief, in this sense, is being prepared to let what you know exists, to work.  This is the ‘belief’ used of our relationship to Christ in the New Testament.  It is not just a belief in His existence, but the kind of belief that lets Him work.”*

I wonder what Noah was thinking as he spent all that time planning, building and preparing the Arc.  His faith allowed him to “condemn” the world, leave it all behind for his belief in God!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Lean on Me

“The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God.  Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves.” Romans 14:23

“’But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.  And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer behold Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

“’I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.  But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, He will disclose to you what is to come.  He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you.’” John 16:7-14

“Living by faith is the basis upon which every Christian is called to live, because the only alternative to living in dependence upon God is to be acting in independence of God.  It is the attitude of independence that is the essence of sin.  ‘Sin’ is all that which does not derive from belief in Jesus Christ.”*

Some of us learn early on not to lean on anyone and then along comes Jesus and He saves us and says “lean on Me” and until you do chaos reigns around us.

“’Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart’ and you shall find rest for your souls.’” Matthew 11:28-29

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene
