Wednesday Before - Value in Values

"And while He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head.

"But some were indignantly remarking to one another, 'Why has this perfume been wasted?  For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.'  And they were scolding her.

"But Jesus said, 'Let her alone; why do yuo bother her?  She has done a good deed to Me.  For the poor you always have with you, and whenever you wish, you can do them good; but you do not always have Me.  She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for burial.

"And truly I say to you, wherever the Gospel is preached in the whole world, that also which this woman has done shall be spoken of in memory of her.'" Mark 14:3-9

On this evening Jesus and His eager followers take time to relax for a meal at the home of a man grateful for being touched by Jesus and healed of a physical disease.

When a woman comes to Jesus and performs this costly, yet simple act, He sees yet again how much work He still has to do, as His followers argue over the value of the "wasted" perfume!

There is nothing so valuable we cannot risk giving it to our Lord Jesus Christ!  Yet, many times all we see is our "poorness" and "neediness".  Even though many of us may not have money or possessions -- sometimes we fear we may not even be able to meet our bills -- we are not facing these times alone.

Jesus died to give us strength to keep on keeping on through the hard times.  When we have Jesus, we have all we need.

Even what we have, when given away in His name becomes far more in His hands than it ever can in ours.  It is only when we want to hold onto money and possessions out of love for them or our fear of loss of them, that we slowly forget the value and power of His love in us.

He is able to provide all we need, when we need it.  After all, what is the value of Christ in our lives, if not to rest in Him?

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

Tuesday before Crucifixion - Anticipation

"And He entered and was passing through Jericho.  And behold, there was a man by the name of Zaccheus; and he was a chief tax gatherer, and he was rich.  And he was trying to see who Jesus was, and he was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.  And he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.

"And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, 'Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.'  And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly.  And when they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, 'He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.'" Luke 19:1-7

Jesus and His followers would now be travelling through what was known as the Imperial Estates into Jericho, the city God gave to Joshua in one of the strangest battles ever known.

Probably all the disciples and followers (likely a large group) would already be laughing with joy and relief.  And knowing they would be dining at Zaccheus' place, they knew they were in for a spectacular meal!  They were more than ready for a good celebration in anticipation of what would be coming.  They were tired of hearing Him talk of His martyrdom.

Finally, they would see some action as He claimed His rightful place as Messiah.  The battle and victory against the Romans was assured.  Their elevation among their peers (who failed to recognise the Messiah) would be their reward.  They would enjoy a long and blessed reign with Jesus -- this preoccupied, quiet and meek man they had come to love.

But Christ anticipated something far different.  He knew (even though He laughed and celebrated with His beloved followers) the seriousness, the finality, true meaning and strength of this final act of His obedience.  That once complete, would open the door for all people to a lifetime relationship with His Heavenly Father.

But there were still a few days to go.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

Monday of THE Week - His Only Bow

"And after He had said these things, He was going on ahead, ascending to Jerusalem.  And it came about that when He approached Bethphage, and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, saying,

"'Go into the village opposite you, in which as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it, and bring it here, and if anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' thus shall you speak.  'The Lord has need of it.'

"And those who were sent away found it just as He had told them.  And as they were untying the colt, its owner said to them, 'Why are you untying the colt?'  And they said, 'The Lord has need of it.'

"And they brought it to Jesus, and they threw their garments on the colt, and put Jesus on it.  And as He was going, they were spreading their garments in the road.

"And as He was now approaching, near the descent fo the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, saying, 'Blesses is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest!'

"And some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to Him, 'Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.'  And He answered and said, 'I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!'" Luke 19:28-40

Anything can happen in your life.  All of you have remarkable stories to tell of high points and low points in your own personal journey.  Have you ever thought back at the choices you've made to take one path or another and wonder what would have happened if you had taken the other road?

Would it have been easier?  Would you be happier?  What lessons would you have learned on that other road?  What lessons would you have missed?

Jesus also found Himself facing choices.  The most important one was His obedience to His loving Father.  I guess after all, that is our most important choice too!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

Friday Before THE Friday

“For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.”  Hebrews 4:15

“’O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her!  How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings and you were unwilling.  Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!  For I say to you, from now on you shall not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’’”  Matthew 23:37-39

It all starts when you’re a little kid and you’re looking forward to a date, like Christmas or your birthday.  Sometimes it is a good thing you’re looking forward to, like going to grandma’s or to the ice cream store; and sometimes it’s a hard thing, like your first day at school or waiting till Daddy comes home to discipline you.

You probably use this statement, most frequently when you’re in a car, bus, plane, etc., and you just want the journey to be over.  “Are we there yet?”, you ask.  “Is this trip over?”

I was just thinking this morning of how Jesus must have felt as He walked along, teaching and reviewing life-changing lessons with His followers.

Was He thinking, “Are we there yet?”  “Can I just rest now, Father?”  But there was still one more LONG week to go.  He was, after all, fully human and fully divine.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene
