How the Symptoms Work!

"My dear friends, you have always obeyed.  You obeyed God when I was with you.  It is even more important that you obey now while I am not with you.  Keep on working to complete your salvation, and do it with fear and trembling.  Yes, God is working in you to help you want to do what pleases Him.  Then He gives you the power to do it.

"Do everything without complaining or arguing.  Then you will be innocent and without anything wrong in you.  You will be God's children without fault.  But you are living with crooked and mean people all around you.

"Among them you shine like stars in the dark world.  You offer to them the teaching that gives life.  So when Christ comes again, I can be happy because my work was not wasted.  I ran in the race and won."  Philippians 2:12-16 The Everyday Bible[1]

"For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of  himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith." Romans 12:1

I hope you're not too tired of reading Philippians 2:12-16 in so many versions...but it really is a most remarkable passage!  And we can't just skip over it quickly!

To me the most remarkable part of the part is that it is GOD who is building the desire and power within you to do the right thing...and He KNOWS you feel powerless to fix a weakness or habit in your life so HE helps you want to and He gives you the power to DO it!

There is value in pretending to be thoughtful, tolerant or polite, for instance.  Because, one day, from that obedience will come conviction, just like the way unconditional love makes inroads in your heart until loving someone, regardless of their perceived faults or bad habits, is something you do with grace.  That is the power of the Holy Spirit within you!  Now isn't THAT neat!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

Symptom Five of Salvation

"Consequently, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only when I was with you but even more so now that I am absent from you, cultivate your own salvation with reverence and trepidation, for it is God who is at work within you, so as to will and to work for His good pleasure.

"Do it all without grumbling and objections, so that you may be blameless and innocent, God's faultless children in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world, thus holding fast to the message of life as to be my pride on the day of Christ, because I shall neither have run nor laboured in vain." Philippians 2:12-16 - The Holy Bible - Revised Berkeley Version in Modern English[1]

On a trip home, my friend Frank Cawood, arranged for me to share lunch with a gentle Christian, Patrick Johnstone.  Let me go back a bit...I moved to Australia in 1989 and attended a life-changing course on prayer (Change the World School of Prayer[2] click the link or cut and paste this one into your browser:  http://www.ehc.org/ctwsop).  Afterward, I was given a gift from my first Christian friend in Australia, John Bensley, called Operation World[3] or http://www.operationworld.org/)

As a young Navigator (https://www.navigators.org/Home) my prayer life was punctuated by my unfurling a huge map of the world onto the end of my bed during prayer times to pray for missionaries, of whom I longed to be one.

Operation World, however, changed my prayer life and perspective on what missionary work is truly about.  I prayed through the book each year until the pages fell out.  Updated versions grew to be too large to carry with me...(you can find it online nowadays)!

The fifth symptom of salvation is a heart for evangelism...a missionary heart, not just by living a "good" life but by risking all and going forth into the mission field the Lord has entrusted to you, be that your workplace, a sports team or to the furthest parts of the world!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene

Symptom Four of Salvation

"So then, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed me -- and that not only when I was with you -- now, even more in my absence, complete the salvation that God has given you with a proper sense of awe and responsibility.

"For it is God who is at work within you, giving you the will and the power to achieve His purpose.

"Do all you have to do without grumbling or arguing, so that you may be blameless and harmless, faultless children of God, living in a warped and diseased age, and shining like lights in a dark world.

"For you hold up in your hands the very word of life.  Thus can you give me something to be proud of in the day of Christ, for I shall know then that I did not spend my energy in vain." Philippians 2:12-16 The Phillips Bible[1]

Amemptos.  Akeraios.  Amomos!  These three Greek words collectively describe our Christian purity:  to be blameless, harmless and without rebuke!

1.   The first word, blameless, is how the world around us should see us as His followers, transparent examples of this purity.
2.   The second word, harmless, is what we are to ourselves, in our heart of hearts and hints at living an unmixed or unadulterated life -- to be absolutely sincere, clean and pure in thought and character.
3.   The third word , without rebuke, describes how God sees us, that we are spotless or unblemished - fit as a sacrifice for His purposes.

Christian purity, as William Barclay says, "is blameless in the sight of the world, sincere within itself, and fit to stand the scrutiny of God."[2]

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene
