The End

“For the good that I wish, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not wish.  But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.  I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do go.  For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law o f my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.  Wretched man that I am!  Who will set me free from the body of this death?

“Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our lord!  So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.  There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 7:19-8:2

“This is the Christian life.  Having faced our failure to express His likeness and image in the world, we come to the Cross for forgiveness, and are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and become incorporated into Christ, to become the vehicle for the expression of His life and purpose.

“The world desperately needs to know this, but will have no grounds on which to believe it until they see the life and character of Jesus Christ lived out in your life and mine.  This is God’s purpose for you!  It was His purpose when He first created man, and is therefore the only thing that makes life make sense in any ultimate way.  Have you found reality in Jesus Christ, or have you substituted it with something else?”*

Discipleship is about learning how to lean on the Lord Jesus Christ.  Like physical exercise, it takes regular, consistent, sets of repetitions once you realise how important it is to stay physically fit.  Throughout your physical life your dedication to exercise will help you have a more robust life till the end.

So too your life in Christ will be stronger, as you practice and grow in strength in the principles of discipleship.  This makes lifting the heavy weights of obedience easier as others watch until the end.

Today, marks the final instalment of the book by Charles Price, Christ For Real.  I pray these instalments have been as much a blessing for you to read as they have been for me to read again and write about.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Dynamic & Demanding

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify  you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is He who calls you and He also will bring it to pass.” I Thessalonians 5:23-25

“’I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.  The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly.’” John 10:9-10

“’Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will pour into your lap.  For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.’”  Luke 6:38

“For Christ to be in us is DYNAMIC.  But for us to be in Christ is DEMANDING.  If He has something to do, He has the right to use us as the means of doing it.  If there is an ‘Ethiopian eunuch’ on the desert road, He has the right to tell you to leave your Samaria and go to meet him.  But for every demand He makes, He provides the dynamic of His Spirit within to accomplish.”*

If we stress over the DEMANDING we may miss the DYNAMIC working of the Lord in and through us.  Stay alert, my friends!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Resources for Response

“’All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.  Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.’” Matthew 11:27-30

For Christ to be in us gives us RESOURCES.  Everything we possibly need is ours in the Lord Jesus Christ.  But for us to be in Christ gives us responsibilities.  As part of His Body, the most important issue I have to face is ‘What do You want me to do?’”*

There’s nothing HE lacks...nothing HE can’t provide for you.  He KNOWS you’re weary and heavy-laden.  HE stands waiting, offering to hold you and let you rest in His arms.  He knows that even when resting, you are serving as others watch how you respond to His resources AND His offer of ultimate support through troubled waters.

Just Let Go!

“’I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.  Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He lifts up [Greek word is airo.  It means to lift up off the ground to ensure the plant gets more air circulating around it and to clean off the dust, so more light gets in]; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it, that it may bear more fruit.  You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.  Abide in Me, and I in you.

“’As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in Me.  I am the vine, you are the branches, he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.

“’If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you.  By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.  Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.  These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.’” John 15:1-11

“For Christ to be in us gives us POWER.  We can live effectively in no other strength than that which derives from the life of Jesus Christ...But, for us to be in Christ gives us PURPOSE.  It is not a power that enables us to live for ourselves, but to equip us to fulfil the plans of Christ who is the head of the body.”*

For me, nothing is more difficult than to trust another...My life experiences make me wary and reluctant to lean on anyone else, and sometimes when I focus more on the circumstances whirling around me (like Peter in the midst of the storm on the Sea of Galilee), I even stop leaning and trusting in Christ.  He knows this about me, as He knows everything about me.

It started me thinking again of how much He loves me to just wait while I persist in thrashing about on my own until I realise it is hopeless without Him to “lift me up” for His purposes.  What about you?

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Responsibility

“But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.  More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,

“that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.  Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:7-12

“Every new morning we can anticipate that the Lord Jesus Christ will be free to express Himself through us that day, and accomplish some aspect of His work, whether we can identify what He has done or not.  That is our privilege, and this is our responsibility.”*

As Scott Peck started his book, The Road Less Travelled:  “Life is difficult.”  The Christian life is both difficult and easy...difficult from circumstances and easy if we only lean back on our Saviour, which in itself is so difficult!  It is our responsibility however, if we are to serve Him best!

Primarily

“And He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’  And they immediately left the nets and followed Him.” Matthew 4:19-20

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘if anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.  For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it.  For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul?  Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”16:24

“And behold one came to Him and said, ‘Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?’  And He said to him, ‘Why are you asking Me about what is good?  There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’

“He said to Him, ‘Which ones?’  And Jesus said, ‘You shall not commit murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honour your father and mother and you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

“The young man said to Him, ‘All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?’

“Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’” Matthew 19:16-21

“God does not want us primarily to be dedicated to causes, but to be available to Christ.  He may call us to give our lives in the interest of some particular cause, but our commitment is primarily to Christ, and consequently, to anything He has given us to do.”*

There are so many good and admirable distractions to keep us from following the Lord...always be watchful and aware of who or what you are following.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Why Did I Leave?

“But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, ‘Arise and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.’  (This is a desert road.)  And he arose and went; and behold there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians who was in charge of all her treasure; and he had come to Jerusalem to worship.  And he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.  “And the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go up and join this chariot.’  -- And Philip opened his mouth and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him.” Acts 8:26

“In the Acts of the Apostles, the apostles and leaders of the early church were not committed to a strategy, but to Christ.  Any strategy that derived from the Lord was good, but their commitment was to Him.  [Here] Philip is being marvellously used of God in preaching to the huge crowds that gathered in Samaria, when he received instructions to leave and go to a desert road!  No one lives on the desert road!  He is being taken away from an opportunity for large scale evangelism! -- Philip was committed to Jesus Christ, not just to evangelism.  Had he ‘dedicated’ himself to being a great evangelist he would not have left Samaria.”*

I was in Buffalo, New York.  The Billy Graham Crusade had drawn thousands and thousands -- so many made a personal commitment to Christ!  I’d prepared to serve in two previous Crusades and both times moved just before they took place.  But finally, for this one it was my time to serve in focused prayer for those who’d come forward, sang in the choir, was trained as a counsellor, did follow-up, held Bible study classes for the new believers in my home and was considering going on staff.

It was my Christian dream come true and then someone asked me to go to Australia!  I couldn’t believe it and went to the Lord asking Him for His guidance.  He drew me to this passage and I knew I had to go.  What if I had chosen to stay in Buffalo?

Following Him is more important that using our common sense or doing what seems logical or productive or “successful”...no strategy is more important that acknowledging His Lordship over all!

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST:  For Kent & his family.  His mom has passed away.

The phone meeting about a new project for me has led to a meeting this Friday.  Help me keep focused on His will.

NEW PRAYER REQUESTS:  For all of us as we move out into this New Year, that we would have the heart of the Lord in all that we do.

PRAISE & THANKSGIVING:   Adrian is preparing for a new treatment and is sounding stronger than he has in a year.  For Deepak, who’s home now, his father seems better.  For Linda and Ian and the wisdom they have so generously shared.  Tim B finally having relief from his massive headaches.  Hans, is enjoying his new-found fellowship and new job (first full-time role since 2004).  For J&S, special friends, as they begin to manage some normal life for the first time in years.  Still need a permanent place to live.

PRAY FOR THOSE WITH HEALTH CONCERNS:  David R doing well through complicated health challenges.  For Jon C, as he meets life after a stroke.  Paul NS.  Tim (my little brother) with CPRD, needs financial help, especially with no health insurance -needs a disability pension.  Steve Barns for relief from great pain and depression.

For Audley and Beverly (she’s disabled from a stroke and needs a carer during the day so Audley can go out and work.  For Carlton suffering from horrible infections in his bones.

ONGOING JOB RELATED:  Barbara’s (sister-in-law) is eager to find new work since her project ended.  For Tim, my amazing brother, that he might find satisfying work that he’s able to do.

ONGOING PRAYER REQUESTS:  Pray the Lord’s hand is dramatically apparent in the lives of all who receive and read this devotion...that His mighty works would be worked out in each life for His purposes in surprising and wonderful ways!

Isaiac dealing with the aftermath of super-typhoon Pablo in the Philippines.  Pray for healing of hearts in Connecticut grieving after the mass shooting of the 20 four-six year olds and six adults.  For those affected Government decision makers and volunteers still working on the aftermath of super storm Sandy.

Comfort those who loved Deb , especially Vern, as they deal with her loss.  Carla & Paul K for good results from their business plans.

For Tarrega, as his hearts settles and strengthens.  For Linda, that the Lord will show her which doors to open next after she rests a bit.  For Rob as the Lord works in a new way in his life...protect his health.  For Jodie as she deals with the knife edge of corporate politics.  Laura S as she reaches out for answers, that she finds the Truth.

Pray for PJ.  For Annette as she begins some new career adventures.  Pray for wisdom for my brother as he deals with an important matter.

For Roger as he considers options for a pledge of heart.  Adam who’s becoming involved with a cult that’s filling many unmet needs.  Scott, for strength as he struggles and grows (for Donna as she encourages him).  For David K, in his studies and Matthew K as he grows up.  For Kevin (Godly wisdom with his son), Michael.  Elaine and Jim back in Hong Kong.

PRAY FOR THE WORLD:  God’s grace on USA & REVIVAL for His children there and for the many nations suffering from global financial mismanagement.

Designed Priorities

“’All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.  Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My load is light.’” Matthew 11:27-30

“And Jesus was going about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.  And seeing the multitudes, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and downcast like sheep without a shepherd.  Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.  Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.’” Matthew 9:35-38

“They were not to run off and do as much as they possibly could, but to be in touch with the ‘Lord of the harvest’ so that He could direct them to whoever He might choose whenever He might choose.  The Lord is the strategist, and He alone knows where He wants us to be and what He wants us to do.”*

Jesus didn’t send people out without a plan; and He certainly did not send anyone out into the harvest to wear themselves out or miss the “designed priorities” of their lives, such as:  personal health, family and friends.  “Work-life balance” is not a modern idea, the Lord created it for our benefit.

In Creation we find the seeds of comparison, competition and jealousy begin to sprout.  These drive us away from His plan if we do not keep our eyes on Jesus.  He is the Head of the Body...remember?
