Shy Jesus

“And the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery and having set her in the midst, they said to Him, ‘Teacher, this woman as been caught in adultery, in the very act. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?’ And they were saying this, testing Him, in order that they might have grounds for accusing Him.
"But Jesus stooped down, and with His finger wrote on the ground. But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, ‘He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ And again He stooped down, and wrote on the ground.” John 8:3-8

“Jesus showed restraint, refusing to overwhelm people with a brash display of power.”* Yet even his thirty-six miracles demonstrated “a quality like divine shyness.”*—“even as He performed them, He often seemed to downplay them. When He resurrected the daughter of a Jewish VIP, He gave strick orders to keep it quiet. Mark records seven separate occasions when Jesus told a person He had healed, ‘Tell no one!’” *

Some would imagine He asked that people keep His miracles a secret so He would not be mobbed for more. I’m sure this is part of it, but it seems that when you consider Christ, He rarely did ANYTHING for show and attention or to make people obey Him. He, even though a Jew, did not seem to enjoy arguing to prove His point! One of the most powerful moments in Scripture to me is when Jesus knelt down to write in the dirt. Only He had the right to cast a stone, yet He did not!

You Miss the Point!

“’O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.’” Matthew 23:37

“’Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.’ And He answered and said to them, ‘And why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

“’For God said, ‘Honour your father and mother, ’ and ‘he, who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’ But you say, ‘Whoever shall say to his father or mother, ‘Anything of mine you might have been helped by has been given to God,’ he is not to honour his father or his mother.’

“’And thus you invalidated the Word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, ‘This people honours Me with their lips, but their hearts if far away from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’’” Matthew 15:2-9

“Jesus, who could destroy Jerusalem with a word, who could call down legions of angels to force subjection, instead looks over the city and weeps. God holds back; He hides Himself; He weeps. Why? Because He desires what power can never win. He is a King who wants not subservience, but LOVE. Thus, rather than mowing down Jerusalem, Rome, and every other worldly power, He chose the slow, hard way of Incarnation, love, and death. A conquest from within.” *

And people then as now, keep missing this point!

AMAZING Grace!

“The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands, day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.” Psalm 19:1-2

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:1-5

“’My project is the first scientific experiment in history to settle once and for all the question of God’s existence. As things presently stand, there may be sighs of His existence but they point both ways and are therefore ambiguous and so prove nothing. For example, the wonders of the universe do not convince those most conversant with the wonders, the scientists themselves. Whether or not this testifies to the stupidity of scientists or to God’s success at concealing Himself doesn’t matter.’ – Walker Percy, The Second Coming” *

“’And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, ‘You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, safe Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.’” In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him, and saying, ‘He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we shall believe in Him. He trusts in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He takes pleasure in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” Matthew 27:39-43

If EVER there was a time to reveal Himself, His crucifixion was a perfect moment. Yet, Jesus’ love of the Father and His love for us compelled Him to be obedient – only in this way could the relationship between you and the Father be restored. Amazing GRACE!

Inside Job

“And behold, they were bringing to Him a paralytic, lying on a bed; and Jesus seeing their faith, said to the paralytic; ‘Take courage, My son, your sins are forgiven.’ And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, ‘This fellow blasphemes.’

“And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, ‘Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? For which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, and walk,’? But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, -- then He said to the paralytic – ‘Rise, take up your bed, and go home.’ And he rose and went home. But when the multitudes saw this, they were filled with awe, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.” Matthew 9:2-8

“Yes, He solved some problems in the world around Him, but mainly He used His energy to battle unseen forces. – The real battle was against invisible, spiritual powers. Faith, the forgiveness of sins, the power of the Evil One – these were the concerns that drove Jesus to His Father in prayer each day.

"Such an emphasis confused the crowds, who primarily sought solutions to their problem in the physical world: poverty, illness, political oppression.” *

It has always been an inside job for the Lord with each of us. He knows if our hearts are right, the outside will be right too. It is easier to fix the outside – “to clean the outside of the cup” – while the real problem lies inside! But we don’t ever have to clean the inside alone and that is His amazing love we can rely on! We can hand the cup humbly to our Father, He IS sufficient!

Not Over Yet

“They took Jesus therefore, and He went out bearing His own cross to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified Him, -- After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop, and brought it to His mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit.” John 19:17-18a, 28-30

“For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping, because of Thine indignation and Thy wrath; for Thou hast lifted me up and cast me away. My days are like a lengthening shadow, and I wither away like grass. But Thou, O Lord, dost abide forever, and Thy name to all generations.” Psalm 102:9-12

“Jesus a king? A mock king if ever there was One, with His purple robe clotted with blood from the beatings and a crown of thorns jammed into His head. The disciples ran away, their loyalty overwhelmed by their fear of immediate danger. If Jesus could not protect Himself, why should He protect them? The visible world of Roman might met the invisible world of the Kingdom of Heaven and seemed for a time to snuff it out.” *

Sometimes it is easy to give up hope when things grow dark and empty and frightening around us. That is a perfect time to consider Christ!

Perception = Reality ?

“Now in those days, John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” Matthew 3:1-2

“And when He saw the multitudes, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. And opening His mouth He began to teach them saying, ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’” Matthew 5:1-3

“’Pray, then in this way: ‘Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name, Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’” Matthew 6:9-10

“Therefore, do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then, let us pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.” Romans 14:16-19

As soon as Jesus used the term ‘kingdom’ “images sprang to life in the minds of His audience; bright banners, glittering armies, the gold and ivory of Solomon’s day, a nation restored to grandeur. But then something would happen to dash these expectations and all the feelings of disappointment would wash in again. As it turned out, the word ‘kingdom’ meant one thing to the crown and quite another to Jesus.” *

And because of this they focused on restoration of power for them as individuals rather than focusing on the power of restoration with the father. But then perception, even today, seems more real sometimes than the reality of Truth.

Naaa! Too Ordinary Now...

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

“He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh, nor the will of man, but of God.

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:1-5, 10-14

“What went wrong? – Jesus made God’s will clearer than it had ever been before. Incredibly, He opened Himself to the scientific method of investigation, which is exactly what He got from Pharisees, Sadducees, and other skeptics. Anyone could walk right up to the Son of God and ask a question or debate with Him. – And yet, Jesus’ visibility, His very ordinariness, introduced a new problem – Jesus did not match their image of what God should look like. He was a man, for goodness’ sake, One who hailed from the jerkwater town of Nazareth at that – Mary’s boy, a common carpenter.” *

Kenosis

“And when they saw Him, they were astonished; and His mother said to Him, ‘Son why have You treated us this way? Behold, Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You.’ And He said to them, ‘Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?’ And they did not understand the statement which He had made to them. And He went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart.” Luke 2:47-51

“And after weaving a crown of thorns they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they kneeled down before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ And they spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull,” Matthew 27:29-33

“...there they crucified Him – But Jesus was saying, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they re doing.’” Luke 23:33-34

“’Kenosis’ is the technical word theologians use to describe Christ emptying Himself of the advantages of deity. A physical body freed Christ to act on a human scale, without those “disadvantages” of infinity. He could say what He wanted without His voice blasting the tree tops. He could express anger by calling King Herod a fox or by reaching for a bullwhip in the temple, rather than shaking the earth with His stormy presence.

“And He could talk to anyone – a prostitute, a blind man, a widow, a leper -- without having to announce, ‘Fear not!’ ‘Twas much, that man was made like God before, but that God should be made like man, much more. – John Donne, ‘Holy Sonnet 15’” *

Weeping & Laughing With Us

“’For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and nor for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. And I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will restore your fortunes and will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile.’” Jeremiah 39:11-14

“’God weeps with us so that we may one day laugh with Him.’ – Jurgen Moltmann*

I was struck by both the Scripture the quote. But the Scripture is so powerful because if you read it for you as it was written for you personally, there is a special message in there. It takes trusting Him more than we can realise perhaps, but then He tells us He will provide when we have the need.

“What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you [within you]? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? -- You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. – Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: ‘He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made, to dwell in us’?” James 4:1, 3, 5

You Wonder WHY?

“’Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord; I will not look upon you in anger, for I am gracious.’ Declares the Lord; ‘I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the Lord your God and have scattered your favours to the strangers under every green tree, and you have not obeyed My voice,’ declares the Lord. ‘Return, O faithless sons,’ declares the Lord; for I am a master to you, and I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion. Then I will give you shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you on knowledge and understanding. – How I would set you among My sons, and give you pleasant land, the most beautiful inheritance of the nations! You shall call Me, My Father, and not turn away from following Me.’” Jeremiah 3:12b-15, 19

“At the end of the Old Testament, God was in hiding. He had threatened to hide His face, and when He finally did a dark shadow fell across the planet. Our disappointment with God twenty-five centuries later is a faint aftershock of what the Jews felt when God turned His back. Today, we may find some comfort in looking back on lessons from the past. We may see the ‘disadvantages’ to God’s close up interventions: His Presence, too bright for us, leaves scorch marks; it creates distance; and worse, it doesn’t even seem to foster faith.” *

God HAS a plan for each of us and what a privilege to fall in His hands!

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [full, complete and perfect payment] for our sins. – There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us.” I John 4:10, 18-19

But What About NOW?

Jesus said: “’Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal’ for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’” Matthew 6:19-21

“’All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. Come to Me [therefore], all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your soul. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.’” Matthew 11:27-30

“’But what about right now? Must we wait past death for all meaningful answers to the problems of disappointment with God? – [The prophets] force-feed the hope of heaven to the poor in order to keep them from demanding too much on earth. [Yet] the church has abused the prophets’ visions. You will never find that ‘pie in the sky’ rational in the prophets themselves. – The people of God are not merely to mark time, waiting for God to step in and set right all that is wrong. Rather, they are to model the new heaven and new earth, and by so doing awaken longings for what God will someday bring to pass.’” *

The Father gives us so much that were we to actually thank Him for all the blessings in our lives, we would spend the rest of our lives on our knees humbled. But He wants us on our feet and growing into the image of His beloved and only Son, so others are irresistibly drawn, not to us, but to the image of Christ IN us.

Hope in the Fire

“’For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you, who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall. And you will tread down the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day which I am preparing says the Lord of hosts.’” Malachi 4:1-3

“No summary of the prophets would be complete apart from one last message: their [prophets] loud insistence that the world will not end in ‘universal final defeat,’ but in JOY. There will be no fear then, and no pain. No infants will die; no tears will fall. Among the nations, peace will flow like a river, and armies will melt their weapons into farm tools. No one will complain about the hiddenness of God in that day. His glory will fill the earth, and the sum will seem dim by contrast. For the prophets, human history is not an end in itself but a transition time.” *

Fire and brimstone is part of the message of the prophets and probably that’s why many people avoid them. But, as there are conditions with every promise God makes, there is always hope in the prophets’ messages. You just have to know your God.

Without Hope

“Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance, and perseverance, proven character, and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless [and hopeless], at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God DMENOSTRATES His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ DIED for us.” Romans 5:1-8

“Does any human emotion run as deep as hope? – [Fairy tale] does not deny the existence of... sorrow and failure; the possibility of these is necessary to the joy of the deliverance: it denies (in the face of much evidence, if you will) universal final defeat... giving a fleeting glimpse of Joy, Joy beyond the walls of the world, poignant as grief.’ No summary of the prophets would be complete apart from one last message: their loud insistence that the world will not end in ‘universal final defeat’, but in Joy. But always in every one of their seventeen books, the prophets of the Old Testament got round to a word of hope.” *

His love and hope in our hearts is what He cultivates in the unique, personal relationship He has with each of us until we “see” Him and turn to Him! Without THIS, there would be no HOPE.

Can't get you out of My mind....

“Thus says the Lord, ‘Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,’ declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:23-24

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me,” Psalm 23:1-4

“God is the betrayed one. It was Israel, not God, who had gone a-whoring. The prophets of Israel had expressed a profound disappointment in God, accusing Him of acting aloof, unconcerned, selent. But when God spoke, He poured out emotions pent up for centuries. And He, not Israel, was the truly disappointed party. ‘What else can I do?’ God’s poignant question to Jeremiah points up the dilemma of an omnipotent God who has made room for freedom. Human beings are like nothing else in nature, God cannot control them. Yet He cannot simply thrust them aside either. He cannot get humanity out of His mind.” *

“’For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.’” John 3:16

In His desire for intimacy with His children He finally found a new Way to embrace us!
