WAYS TO FAST

Day 3

[Jesus teaching] “’Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

“’And whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance in order to be seen fasting by men.  Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

“’But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face so that you may not be seen fasting by men, but by your Father who is in secret and your Father who sees in secret, will repay you.’” Matthew 6:1, 16-18.

Fasting doesn't have to mean refusing to eat.  For some, that may be dangerous or impractical.  You may have an illness that makes it dangerous to fast (like diabetes).

You may find it is far more important to share a meal and time with someone during this time than being legalistic about keeping to a fast or calling attention to your fasting.  Be creative!  Think of other ways to fast.

For instance, you could:

Eliminate or moderate eating foods you truly love and crave.  (for me that would be salt and chocolate).
Decide not to eat anything fried (and you really love fried foods)
Give up coffee or tea (because you can't get through the day without them.).
Skip one meal every day for the forty days.
Skip solid foods and have only liquids.
Fast from solid foods every other day.

Remember the purpose is to take extra time to pray.  It is about heart attitude rather than sacrifice.  Grumbling, or using it as an excuse to be grumpy, or complain; or bragging how amazing you are for/at fasting is NOT acceptable.

PRAY

During the mealtime you would have been eating.
                     Every time your tummy rumbles.
Whenever you see someone eating foods you love.

If you are considering or beginning to fast and you are prone to sickness, are very young or mature be sure to consult with your doctor before you begin.

We are not to put God to a foolish test.  We must never expect that if we do something unwise that God will be forced to work supernaturally in our lives to keep us healthy.  Fasting is about Him, not us, after all.

Whatever you do, be sure to drink lots of fluids.  Some people find sucking on lifesavers or barley sugar (for those of you in Australia) a good idea to keep energy levels up – but be warned it will make you feel hungrier a short while later.

Choose foods or meals you can give up consistently for the entire 40 days.  The desire of your heart should increasingly grow to please the Father – that is worlds more important than if you give up chocolate cake!

You may find God calls you NOT to fast in the “normal” way, but to pray in an exceedingly personal and/ or frequent and/ or lengthy manner or to read more Scripture each of the 40 days.

The Holy Spirit will "witness" with your spirit what is right for you.

Finally, whether you have chosen to fast or now, please join me in praying for anyone who participates in fasting during Lent this year (starts 26 February and ends 9 April), that they will be focused on Him and not their tummy or other desires.

Finally, there is an excellent book about meditating on Scripture, what it means and how to enjoy it.  It would prove an invaluable read during this time, entitled God Up Close by Doug McIntosh, published by Moody Press (ISBN 0-8024-7079-3).

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning. Darlene

SALT

Day 2

“And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He might touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them.

“But Jesus called for them, saying, ‘Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it at all.’” Luke 18:15-18

I was introduced to fasting at age twelve while selling Girl Scout cookies in my neighbourhood.  (Note:  I was not a Christian and I loved to eat.)

Here’s how it started.  There were some girls who lived just up the street.  They wore school uniforms because they were religious.  They went to Catholic school, (had no idea what that meant).  We did not go to church or talk about God except at Thanksgiving and funerals.

However, I intended to win the prize for selling the most Girl Scout cookies for the year.  Their house was in walking distance, so I went there to sell them cookies.

When I got there, they told me they could not have any because they were fasting for Lent.  I thought they said lint but when I got home, I pulled out our encyclopedias (they were big, heavy volumes of real books) and did some research.

I learned Lent was about giving up eating meals for 40 days before Easter and had something to do with the time Jesus was fasting in the desert.  I did have a Bible and had read through the Gospels a few times by then and recognized how serious Easter was, with Jesus getting crucified and all.

What might I present to this unknown God as an offering to demonstrate my love of Him?  It had to be something REALLY valuable to me and something that Mom and Dad would not notice.  I wanted God to know I meant business…but what could I do without for 40 days and nights!?.  I was only 12 years old!

I skipped it that first year.  It seemed too difficult.  The next year, however, I prepared myself and prayed and promised God I would give up salt for Lent.

The fact is, I love lots of salt on my food.  Always have and giving it up gave me a great feeling of self-satisfaction.  I imagined this was joy!  Joy -- giving Him all the salt I would have liked to have on my food.

It was hard that first season of Lent.  But I made a way to make it easy.  Every time I reached for the salt shaker or particularly salty food (no potato chips!) or even found myself thinking how much I wished I hadn't been so foolish to give up salt of all things, I would pray and thank Him for the privilege of knowing Him and being loved by Him.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning. Darlene

INTRODUCTION TO 40 DAYS OF PRAYER AND FASTING

Introduction to 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting

Originally written from February 28 through April 8, 2001
Day 1

For those of you who expressed special interest in the "40-Days of Prayer with Fasting" series, I’ve finally put this together for you to read as you grow through this special time of renewal and closeness with the Lord.  Here are some Scripture passages to meditate on:

"But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth' I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer kept returning to my bosom."  Psalm 35:13

"O God, it is Thou who dost know my folly, and my wrongs are not hidden from Thee.  May those who wait for Thee not be ashamed through me, O Lord God of hosts; May those who seek Thee not be dishonoured through me, O God of Israel, because for Thy sake I have borne reproach; dishonour has covered my face.

I have become estranged from my brothers and an alien to my mother's sons.  For zeal for Thy house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach Thee have fallen on me.  When I wept in my soul with fasting, it became my reproach.  When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.

“But as for me, my prayer is to Thee, O Lord, at an acceptable time; O God, in the greatness of Thy loving-kindness, answers me with Thy saving truth. - Answer me, O Lord, for Thy loving-kindness is good; according to the greatness of Thy compassion, turn to me, and do not hide Thy face from thy servant.”  Psalm 68:5-17

"Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry."  Matthew 4:1-2

"And immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness.  And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.”  Mark 1:12-13

"And Jesus full of the Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan and was led about by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.  And He ate nothing during those days; and when they had ended, He became hungry."  Luke 4:1-2

[Jesus teaching] "And whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance in order to be seen fasting by men.  Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.  But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face so that you may not be seen fasting by men, but by your Father who is in secret and your Father who sees in secret will repay you."  Matthew 6:16-18

Fasting is not a matter of food, but rather the heart attitude.  Fasting itself, as you will see holds special significance, because it is a time when we put something we value aside to instead, delight ourselves in the Lord, so He can move our hearts to desire His heart for His glory and our good.

Some practicalities of fasting[1] are:
  •         "An ordinary man of average weight and fitness embarking on a total fast - that is, a fast during which he refuses both his food and drink - could not expect to live for more than thirty days, nor to be conscious for more than twenty-five.
  •         For him, the forty days of fasting described in religious texts would not be achievable - except with Divine help, of course.  History, however, does not record an intervention of that kind, and medicine opposes it."

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning. Darlene

BUT DADDY ...

“Now it came about after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, ‘Abraham!’  And he said, ‘Here I am.’  And He said, ‘Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah; and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I tell you.’

“So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God has told him.

"On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance.  And Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go yonder, and we will worship and return to you.

“And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in hand the fire and the knife.  So the two of them walked on together.

“And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, ‘My father!’  And he said, ‘Here I am, my son.’  And he said, ‘Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’  And Abraham said, ‘God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son’  So the two of them walked on together.”  Genesis 22:1-8

I was nine when I read this story the first time.  I can tell you it really confused me.  My Daddy was the best and the kindest man ever and smarter than anyone anywhere that I knew.  And he loved me so much he would ‘hug the stuffings out of me’ with such glee and delight!  I could not imagine a Dad who would want to kill his son.

Really!  How could a Dad do that!  And it wasn’t just a son but his ONLY son -- and he even made the son carry the firewood.  And the son was no fool, he figured out what was going to happen.  How could he trust his Dad!

But when you read the passage carefully and prayerfully you discover that Abraham trusted his Heavenly Father so much, he knew God would never let him harm his son and promised ‘…and we will worship and return to you’ when asking the servants to wait for them to return.

Yet, amazingly enough, God DID allow HIS only Son to pay the price for my every sin:  past, present and future.  He loved me so much He choose to carry the wood up that hill and die for my sins rather than live without my having a choice to trust Him.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning. Darlene

ALL I NEED

“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.  He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.

“Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life.  And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23

The first passage I ever memorised when I got my first Bible at nine years old.  And what a perfect one to begin my walk toward the Cross with!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning. Darlene
