New Year's Day - Where Is Truth?

YouTube:  ‘Why I believe The Bible – (20 Minute Brilliancy!)’

By Faith Talks (24 min 25 sec – and worth every second)

“In the beginning was the Word, and thee Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.  In His was life, and the life was the Light of men.  The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:1-5

“For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.”  Hebrews 4:12-13

In the many years I’ve been writing the WeakDay Devotion, I’ve rarely taken a ‘leave of absence’.  However, most of December turned out to be a forced rest for me with various health challenges to deal with.  So, I rested and considered why it is difficult for me to rest and thanked the Lord for the interlude and then for restoring my health.

I offer my apologies and am delighted to continue the ‘God’s Promises Have Conditions Series’ (we are now starting in the New Testament).  But wanted to start the New Year with the foundation of the devotions -- God’s Word.  Please also take a moment to review any prayer requests you have made and update me with any changes.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

A Big Contrast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI7FvpuxTLE

YouTube ‘From Eternity to Here – Micah 5:2’

By David Guzik

“’Now muster yourselves in troops, daughter of troops; they have laid siege against us; with a rod they will smite the judge of Israel on the cheek.

“’But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel.  His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.

“’Therefore He will give them up until the time when she who is in labour has borne a child.  Then the remainder of His brethren will return to the sons of Israel.

“’And He will arise and shepherd His flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord His God.  And they will remain, because at that time He will be great to the ends of the earth.  This one will be our peace.’” Micah 5:1-5a

The king in Jerusalem at the time was king Zedekiah, who reigned when Nebuchadnezzar conquered the city (II Kings 25:1-2).  He was the last of the kings in David’s line to sit on that throne (until the Messiah arrived to establish His eternal kingdom).

Like today, the ruling elite and teachers of the law imagined Jerusalem was not only unconquerable, but when the Messiah arrived, He would, of course, be born there.  When God allowed Jerusalem to be crushed, they would have been very confused.

Four-hundred years passed before the ‘blessed event’ occurred and the birth was not in Jerusalem, but in an insignificant little village with no fanfare.  Is it any wonder the Pharisees and Sadducees were unprepared for the Truth?

Because Jesus came, we each can experience peace with God -- with no more fear of judgment and no more conflict and guilt.  Christ’s peace gives us personal assurance for today and that He will return be victorious over all.  (Also see Luke 2:4-7 and John 14:27)

Missing the Truth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3FE0iL3sfk

YouTube – Gloom to Glory by a Great Light: Isaiah 9:1-7, Part 1

By Desiring God (11 min 58 sec)

“But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.  You shall multiply the nation, you shall increase their gladness; they will be glad in Your presence as with the gladness of harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

“For You shall break the yoke of their Burden and the staff of their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.  For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, and cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

“There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore.  The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:1-7

Imagine the Pharisees, teaching Scripture in Israel during Roman occupation.  Rome had a strict methodology to ‘Romanise’ a defeated nation.  They were authoritarian and blindly just and would never permit another perspective on their rule, even if the locals thought it was God's perspective.

So, it was natural that the teachers saw this prophecy as relevant to their today and saw the passage quite differently from the Truth:  They thought this ‘great light’ would usher in victory over the oppressive boot of Roman occupation, that a high-born descendant of king David would assume the throne, conquer and remove the Romans from the land.  No wonder most missed the Truth.

Jesus, however, was born quietly and in poor circumstances.  He came to the common man, the poor man, the reviled and rejected, the lost and the lowly, the lonely and afraid.  Who could have or who can hope to ever fully understand the breath of His magnificent love and sacrifice for all those who will believe in Him!  (also see Matthew 4:12-17)
