God's Choice

“Oh, the depts. of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counsellor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to Him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever Amen.

“I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."  Romans 11:33-12:1

“We must not press the point so far as to think God “needs” our cooperation. Rather, He has chosen us as His preferred way to reclaim His creation here on earth. He uses human instruments just as my brain uses the instruments of fingers and hand and wrist to write this sentence.” *

Lord, let us all be instruments of Your peace and compassion and most of all of your unfettered and uncontainable and unimaginable and incomparable love in Thanksgiving for Your hand now in our hands and help us always remember:

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (full and perfect payment) for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” I John 4:10-11

God's Three Humiliations

“And He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ And Peter answered and said, ‘The Christ of God.’ But He warned them, and instructed them not to tell this to anyone, saying, ‘The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.’ And he was saying to them all, ‘If any one wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

“For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My Words, of his will the Son of Man be ashamed when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.’” Luke 9:20-26

“Dorothy Sayers has said that God underwent three great humiliations in His efforts to rescue the human race. The first was the incarnation, when He took on the confines of a physical body. The second was the Cross, when He suffered the ignominy of public execution. The third humiliation, Sayers suggested, is the Church. In an awesome act of self-denial, God entrusted His reputation to ordinary people.”

One thing that amazes me is how He never gives up on us...even those times when we give up on Him.

No to Business Case.

“But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. And when they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some were doubtful.

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:16-20

“What, exactly, does God’s plan for the ages accomplish? If one could submit that plan to something like a ‘cost-benefit analysis’ used by corporations, what would be the ‘gains’ and ‘costs’ of such a plan – for God and for us?

“The Church’s obvious defects would seem to be the greatest cost to God. Just as He committed His name to the nation Israel and had it dragged through mud, He no commits His Spirit to flawed human beings.” *

I hope you never grow tired of those four verses in Matthew, for they hold such contrast and hope, that they prove irresistible to me! I pray your Thanksgiving was a joy and a time of sharing with family and friends and that you did not eat too much!

Thank You

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. – for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Finally, by brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same thing again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard to you. – that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. –

“Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say rejoice! Let your forbearing spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Various verses from Phillipians

“The Epistles were written to a motley crew of converted angel worshipers, thieves, idolaters, backbiters, and prostitutes – those were the people in whom God took up residence. Read Paul’s descriptions of the supposed ‘ideal church’ in a city like Corinth: a raucous, ornery bunch that rivals any church in history for their unholyiness.” *

Today in the USA it’s Thanksgiving. What we share in Christ, the grace and gifts we’ve so generously been given....well, I think that IS what Thanksgiving brings to mind for me, even though it’s not celebrated here, my heart is still filled with wonderful, rich memories of spending time with family and Family, thankful to Him! And while I am at it, I am thankful for each and every one of you who take this time to read these musings. Enjoy your day, my friends and eat a piece of turkey and pumpkin pie for me.

Pity the Angels

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3

“He [Paul] pictured the entire universe pausing to watch the events on earth: ‘[God’s] intent was that now, through the Church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.’ Peter added breathlessly that ‘even angels long to look into these things.’

It must be difficult to be an angel watching this world. You stand quietly and reverently beside the loving Heavenly Creator and Father God as He watches His beautiful and gifted creatures wander about searching everywhere for “something missing”. As His children, we have the privilege of pointing others to look up.

Not Alone

“But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptised into one Body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.

“But God has so composed the Body, giving more abundant honour to that member which lacked, that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honoured, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are Christ’s Body, and individually members in it.” I Corinthians 11-14, 24b-27

“The doctrine of the Holy Spirit has great significance for the underlying questions of this book. My friend Richard had asked, ‘Where is God? Show m. I want to see Him.’ Surely at least part of the answer to his question is this: if you want to see God, then look at the people who belong to Him – they are His ‘bodies.’ They are the Body of Christ.

“That is the most humbling aspect of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Richard probably will never hear a voice from a whirlwind that drowns out all questions. He will likely never get a personal glimpse of God in this life. He will only see me.” *

When we are His child, we KNOW we are never alone because He is there with us ALWAYS. Also, it''s comforting to KNOW that His people are there for us too. That is just part of His amazing plan for our lives!

Living Within Me

“’But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me; and concerning judgment, because the rule of this world has been judged.

“’I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

“’He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you.’” John 16:7-15

“The Church is Christ’s body; therefore if the church did it, God did it. Paul’s insistence on this truth may trace back to his first, dramatic personal encounter with God. At the time, he was a fierce persecutor of Christians, a notorious bounty hunter.

“But on the road to Damascus he saw a light bright enough to blind him for three days, and heard a voice from heaven: ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?’ Persecute You? Persecute who? I’m only after those heretics the Christians. ‘Who are you Lord?’ asked Saul at last, knocked flat on the ground. ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ came the reply.

That sentence summarizes as well as anything the CHANGE brought about by the Holy Spirit. Jesus had been executed months before. It was the Christians Saul was after, not Jesus. But Jesus, alive again, informed Saul that those people were in fact His own body. What hurt them, hurt Him. It was a lesson the apostle Paul would never forget.” *

The Comforter, living in you and me....what a miracle and what a privilege and what a sobering realisation when we understand how significant this act of His grace and love is...and how very much He loves us!

Let Him do it !?

“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groaning too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we KNOW that God causes ALL things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

“—What shall we say then to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” Romans 8:24-28, 31-32, 35

“Human beings do the work of God on earth. Or to be more strictly accurate, God does His work through us – the tension comes into play as soon as you try to phrase it. ‘Without God, we cannot. Without us, God will not,’ said Augustine. In a similar vein, Paul wrote, ‘Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.’ In one clause, and ‘for it is God who works in you’ in the next. Whatever else they mean; such conundrums surely contradict a ‘leave it up to God’ attitude.” *

I urge you to read the entire chapter of Romans 8 before the end of the week and if not, on Saturday. Just sit and READ it and make it yours! Thank Him that He loves YOU and has prepared a special plan just FOR you, so YOU can be the best you CAN be for HIS work on this earth. No matter what!

Who's Holy!?

“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ, and make them members of a harlot? Mat it never be! Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a harlot is one body with her? For He says, ‘The two will become one flesh.’ But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.—Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” I Corinthians 6:14-16. 19-20

“For I know that this [whatever you may be struggling through at this very moment] shall turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I shall not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ shall even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:19-21

“We represent God’s holiness on earth. Holiness above all else, constitutes the great distance between God and human beings. It’s what made the Most Holy Place forbidden ground. But the New Testament insists that a seismic change has taken place. A perfect God now lives INSIDE very imperfect human beings. And because He respects our freedom, the Spirit in effect ‘subjects Himself’ to our behaviour. The New Testamant tells of a Spirit we can lie to, or grieve, or quench. And when we choose wrongly, we quite literally subject God to that wrong choice.” *

When I was twelve years old (not yet a Christian but a Bible-reader only), I entered adolescence with heartbreak and fear. My body was changing and I did not like it one bit! One night in my prayer time, I told God He could NOT understand what I was going through because I was a girl and He was a boy!

And do you know what He showed me? That very passage in Philippians. I laid back and hugged the Holy Spirit within me and just KNEW He DID understand completely and fully how I was feeling!

(If you missed any of the devotions you can find them all here: http://www.weakdaydevotion.blogspot.com )

________________-- The WeakDay Devotion has been being written fresh for you every week day morning for over ten years. It originated as encouragement for a dear friend who was having difficulties with her job. Today the number of people who receive it continues to grow as others hear about it, receive it from friends and/or ask to receive it themselves.

It is especially for my family, friends, business people, students, pastors, teachers and a myriad of pre-, new and long-time serving Christians who want more Scripture with their devotion than many of the regular devotionals offer. It is also written to be short (usually one-screen in length) so you can get on with your day, but filled with a new idea from God's Word. .

Don't hesitate to let me know: (1). if you have received this copy from a friend and would like to be included in the regular email distribution list; (2). if you would like an introductory version of the WeakDay Devotions sent to someone or; (3). if you wish to stop the Devotions for a while or be removed from the distribution list all together. (Please note: if you are receiving this from a friend, I will be unable to change this as so many copies are passed on without my knowledge. Best to refer this to the friend who is sending it to you.)

For the official record this goes out as a "blind" copy to save you from wading through a long list of names with each e-mail, I use the New American Standard Translation unless otherwise noted and it is my privilege to pray over and guard the distribution list. Also, you can now read the devotions on the Internet at: http://www.weakdaydevotion.blogspot.com or just do a Google search for “WeakDay Devotion”. If you should ever have to contact me, just send me an e-mail or you can reach me at PO Box 401, Milsons Point NSW, 1565 AUSTRALIA. Oh, yes, and I use McAfee Virus software to protect you.

Misfits for Him

“And He went up to the mountain and summoned those whom he Himself wanted, and they came to Him. And he appointed twelve, that they might be with Him, and that He might send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons. And He appointed the twelve:

“Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, ‘Sons of Thunder’); and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.” Mark 3:13-19

“Yet God took that risk, and because He did so the world will know Him primarily through Christians. The doctrine of the Holy Spirit is the doctrine of ‘the church’: God living in us. Such a plan is the ‘foolishness of God,’ as Paul says in one place, and the writer Frederick Buechner marvels at the folly: ‘to choose for His Holy work in this world...lamebrains and misfits and nitpickers and holier-than-thous and stuffed shirts and odd ducks and egomaniacs and milquetoasts and closet sensualists.’” *

How amazing! He KNEW that the twelve and those who accepted His grace freely given after His resurrection would begin the most amazing, most controversial, most misunderstood movement and ministry in the world?

Delegation Risk

“Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and eivl you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die.’” Genesis 2:15-17

“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ And he said, ‘I heard the sound of Thee in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.’

“And He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ And the man said, ‘The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’ And the woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate.’” Genesis 3:8-13

“Delegation always entails risk, as any employer [or parent] soon learns. When you turn over a job, you let go. And when God ‘makes His appeal through us’ (Paul’s phrase), He takes an awful risk: the risk that we will badly misrepresent Him. Slavery, the Crusades, pogroms against the Jews, colonialism, wars, the Ku Klux Klan – all these movements have claimed the sanction of Christ for their cause. The world God wants to love, the world God is appealing to, may never see Him; our own faces may get in the way.” *

Delegation also can lead to blame and shirking responsibility. How amazing it is to realise the hope the Lord has in us to carry out His plan on earth to appeal to all the nations. He has no other!

Struggle for Intimacy

“But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain w which Jesus had designated. And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him’ but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:16-20

“The progression – Father, Son, Spirit – represents a profound advance in intimacy. At Sinai the people shrank from God, and begged Moses to approach Him on their behalf. But in Jesus’ day people could hold a conversation with the Son of God; they could touch Him, and even hurt Him. And after Pentecost the same flawed disciples who had fled from Jesus’ trial became carriers of the Living God. In an act of delegation beyond fathom, Jesus turned over the kingdom of God to the likes of His disciples – and to us.” *

The Great Handoff

“And Jesus was going about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. And seeing the multitude, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and downcast, like a sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” Matthew 9:35-38

“He seems to do nothing of Himself which He can’t possibly delegate to His creatures. He commands us to do slowly and blunderingly what He could do perfectly and in the twinkling of an eye.

Creation seems to be delegation through and through. I suppose this is because He is a giver.” - C.S. Lewis, The World’s Last Night

Matthew 9:37-38 were the first Bible verses the Lord gave to me when I was only nine years old. I knew they were meant for me in the remote depths of my heart, but I did not really know Him, and I wasn’t really sure what the verses actually meant. It took ten years for Him to work through His Word that He compelled me to read many times, before I understood a bit of what this personal call was about. When I bowed my knee to His love and grace at that time, my life became a remarkable journey of two steps forward and one step back. How about you?

“And God blessed them; and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth. – And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” Genesis 1:28-29, 31

Three Again & Again

“For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breath and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:14-21

“Three temples appear in the Bible, and, taken together, they illustrate a progression: God revealed Himself first as Father, then as Son, and finally as Holy Spirit. The first temple was a magnificent structure built by Solomon and rebuilt by Herod. The second was the ‘temple’ of Jesus’ body (‘Destroy it,’ He said, ‘and I will raise it again in three days’). And now a third temple has taken shape, fashioned out of individual human beings.” *

Since the very beginning the Father longed for His children to trust His love, yet they would not, over and over again. So, He sent His Son to bridge the gap – impossible to cross without the Cross. When He left this world He left His Holy Spirit to dwell within the precious temple of each of us who would just reach out to Him for help and comfort. So simple, yet so difficult for humans who believe they know the way.

May your weekend be filled with wonder and time to consider your heart.

God's Evolution

“’And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel.’” Genesis 3:15

“’And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the familes of the earth shall be blessed.’” Genesis 12:2-3

“Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and rise again from the dead and the third day; and that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending you forth the promise of My Father upon you; and you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.’” Luke 24:45-49

“The mighty, awesome Lord of the universe, full of passion and fire and holiness, dominates the first 900 pages [of the Bible]. Four Gospels follow, about one hundred pages long, recounting Jesus’ life on earth. But after Acts, the Bible shifts to a series of personal letters. Grecians, Romans, Jews, slaves, slave owners, women, men, children – the letters address all these diverse groups, and yet each letter assumes its readers belong to an overarching new identity. They are all ‘in Christ.’

“’The Church is nothing but a section of humanity in which Christ has already taken form,’ said Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The apostle Paul expressed much the same thoughts with his phrase ‘the body of Christ’. The way he saw it, a new species of humanity was emerging on earth, in whom God Himself – the Holy Spirit – was living. They extended the arms and legs and eyes of God on earth. What’s more, Paul acted as if that had BEEN God’s goal all along.” *

The Three Accomplishments

“And when they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in Heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:17-20

Three “scenes – the Sending of the Seventy, the Last Supper, and the Ascension – all reveal something about why Jesus came to earth and why He left. True, He came to settle Divine justice and to show us what God was like, but He also came to establish a Church, a new dwelling place for the Spirit of God.

“When the seventy reported back to Him, Jesus says ‘He who listens to you listens to Me’ (His mission was now handed over to regular human beings). At the Last Supper, Jesus said, ‘As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you, (the Great Commission) knowing they did not comprehend. At the Ascension, Jesus’ body left the earth before His astonished disciples’ eyes. But soon, very soon, at Pentecost, the Spirit of God would take up residence in other bodies. Their bodies. (His empowerment).”

“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you ALL the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:1-3

Wrong-Direction Hopes

“And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. And they were conversing with each other about all these things which had taken place. And it came about that while they were conversing and discussing, Jesus Himself approached, and began travelling with them. But their eyes were prevented from recognising Him. And He said to them, ‘What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?’ And they stood still, looking sad.

“And one of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, ‘Are You the only One visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?’

"And He said to them, ‘What things?’ And they said to Him, ‘The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel.’“ Luke 24:13-21a

“On Sunday, wild, crazy rumours shot through the close-knit community of mourners. And then later in the week you saw Him. It was true! You touched Him with your own hands. Jesus! He had done what no one had done before; He had walked voluntarily into death and walked back you. You would never, never doubt him again.” *

Those who saw Christ crucified had hoped in the wrong direction; they wanted immediate gratification – the kingdom come NOW! But God’s plan included “all the earth” as it always has. Those left behind were to witness hope, yet...some doubted.
