A Christian when I constantly struggle with sin?

By Ligonier Ministries (2 min 19 sec)

“The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but the poor who has understanding sees through him.  When the righteous triumph, there is great glory, but when the wicked rise, men hide themselves.

“He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.  How blessed is the man who fears always, but he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.” Proverbs 28:11-14

“Is anyone among you suffering?  Let him pray.  Is anyone cheerful?  Let him sing praises.  Is anyone among you sick?  Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;

“ …and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins they will be forgiven him.

“Therefore. confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.  The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

“Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain; and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.  And he prayed again, and the sky poured rain, and the earth produced its fruit.” James 5:13-18

It is easy to pray.  My early efforts were more like intimate conversations with Someone I knew loved me.  I would chatter on and on about my difficulties and challenges, my wants and needs.

Although I always trusted that God was attentively listening, there was sometimes doubt when an answer to a particularly important prayer seemed to be missed.

You see I did not understand that -- just like Moses approaching the burning bush in the desert -- you must first remember Who you are talking with.

Although none of us has the capability to understand the holiness of God, we must never forget how much God hates and turns away from sin, even in the hearts of His beloved children.

The number one priority with prayer is to begin by recognising God’s holiness and our choice to sin every day.  Before you approach His throne with your requests, take time to use the ‘spiritual soap (I John 1:8-10)’ He has provided for us.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

Proverbs, Chapter 18 - By Crossway (2 min 38 seconds)

“He who separates himself seeks his own desire, he quarrels against all sound wisdom.  A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own mind.  When a wicked man comes, contempt also comes, and with dishonour comes scorn.

“The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.  To show partiality to the wicked is not good, nor to thrust aside the righteous in judgment.  A fool’s lips bring strife, and his mouth calls for blows.  A fools’ mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

“The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsel, and they go down into the innermost parts of the body.  He also who is slack in his work is brother to him who destroys.  The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe.  Proverbs 18:1-10

“So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.  See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!  And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which de3files the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.” James 3:5-6

I don’t know about you, but there are times when running into the pages of Scripture is all that can quiet my heart.  As you consider these verses, they are offered to remind you of how your words can trip you up and how your loving Heavenly Father is always waiting for you to return to His righteousness.  It is only there where there is safety and compassion.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

Summary and What God wants From Us

By The Bible Says What (3 min 45 sec)

“Anxiety in a man’s heart weights it down, but a good word makes it glad.  The righteous is a guide to his neighbour, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

"A lazy man does not roast his prey, but the precious possession of a man is diligence.  In the way of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death."  Proverbs 12:25-28

Assignment

1.    Set aside an hour and find a place where you will not be interrupted.

2.    Bring your Bible, notebook, something to write with and a refreshment.

3.    Quiet your heart and pray that God will provide you with new insights through this assignment for yourself and for those around you.

4.    Open your Bible to Proverbs 12.

5.    Open your notebook and date a fresh page, then draw a line down the middle of the page (depending on how much you write, this may take more than one page).  At the top of one column write ‘Upright’ and the other ‘Wicked’. (example below)

6.    Go through each verse and designate which is referring to ‘the Upright’ and which is ‘the Wicked’.

NOTE:  You can either write out the bits that are appropriate under the headings in your notebook.  If a verse seems to address both ‘the Wicked’ and ‘the Upright’ you can use the designation of ‘a’ and ‘b’.  Example:  Verse 1.  Verse 1a is for the upright, verse 1b is for the wicked.

7.    Once you have worked through all 28 verses, take time to read through each list and pray and thank God for the new way to see the stark contrast between the upright and the wicked.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)

By HBC Lebanon (4 min 59 sec)

“My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.  Do not let kindness and truth you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.

“So you will find favour and good repute in the sight of God and man.  Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.  It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.  Honour the Lord from your wealth and from the first of all your produce; so your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will overflow with new wine.

“My son do not reject the discipline of the Lord or loath His reproof, from whom the Lord loves He reproves, even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:1-12

The ultimate wisdom is trusting in the Lord with our entire heart.  That takes discipline.  The two verses (5-6) were the favourite verses of one of the most courageous Christians I had the privilege of knowing personally.  He became a long-time friend.

His life was filled to overflowing with one tragedy after another.  Sweet Adrian, however, loved the Lord.  His conviction and trust really was astounding to any who met him and took time with him.

One evening when I made a regular weekly call to him, he shared with me that he was in very peculiar pain.  In fact, the pain was so severe he ended up in hospital.  The hospital thought he must be faking the pain as it couldn’t be that severe.  Over the months of tests and a variety of treatments they discovered that he had a rare and difficult to diagnose cancer that was destroying his bones.

It took about 18 months until he slipped quietly away one night.  A mutual friend stood by him, phone in hand, speaking the prayers, words of care and love that I had for him.

He was so courageous and hopeful.  One thing about Adrian that would affect any heart was his love of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Proverbs 3:5-6 were the last words I heard him speak before he went Home to be with His Saviour.  It is a precious memory for me that remind me of God’s great promise to us if we will only trust Him.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)
