by Giants for God

If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.  But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.  For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
I Timothy 6:8-10

“Do not trust in oppression and do not vainly hope in robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart upon them.” Psalm 62:10

“You shall not have in your bad differing weights, a large and a small.  You shall not have in your house differing measures, a large and a small.  You shall have a full and just weight; you shall have a full and just measure, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.  For everyone who does these things, everyone who acts unjustly is an abomination to the Lord your God.” Deuteronomy 25:13-16

[Jesus teaching] “’Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon and you will be pardoned.  Give, and it will be given to you.  They will pour into your lap a good measure – pressed down, shaken together, and running over.’” Luke 6:37-38

It was 1974.  I was in a big neighbourhood Bible study one night and ‘inadvertently’ volunteered to help someone.  I was asked to meet them at the back of the auditorium after the lesson.  When I did, I met Larry Burkett, who had hand-written a book, Your Finances in Changing Times, and needed someone to just type it up for him.

After I agreed, he introduced me to a stack of pages with almost unintelligible words crowded onto each page.  It took me months to convert the material to error-free, pristine, carefully laid out pages.

From that effort, Larry asked me to help in his ministry and so started a life-long career in writing, organising, editing and illustrating all kinds of materials.

Did you realise that the most frequently mentioned topic in Scripture is money, wealth and prosperity.  Larry documented how God speaks about this topic in every book of the Bible.

Now don’t close this message, because what Larry found was that Scripture never mentions in any way that we are all to have heaps of stuff and lots of money.  Instead, God calls us to be RESPONSIBLE and GENEROUS with what He provides.  God does not bless people for their enthusiasm or their obedience rather He looks at the attitude of the heart toward money in contrast to loving Him.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.  The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.  By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.

“In this is love, not that we love God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [full, perfect, complete payment] for our sins.  Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.  Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” I John 4:7-11

No other person contributed more to my journey ‘from the Cross’ than an ex-basketball star who gave up all his fame to become a pastor-teacher through Dallas Theology Seminary.

Dunwoody Community Church began meeting in a grade school cafeteria.  Each Sunday that big room was packed with adults sitting at little tables cramped together in small plastic chairs.

For two hours each week, Doug and his two co-pastors (Tim Crater and Ralph LaMonte) took turns thoroughly unravelling Bible verses to the astonishment of all of us who sat and took notes.  It is difficult to believe nowadays!  We learned so much about studying and unpacking the treasures of Scripture!

As I grew as a Christian and began to travel, I ‘subscribed’ to Doug’s cassette tape ministry (and still have hundreds of his lesson).  When I was living in Australia and New Zealand, it was the rich meat that sustained me as I began to teach others how to navigate the pages of God’s Word for themselves.

Whenever I made the trip home, I could not wait to visit my ‘home church’ and hear Doug teach in person.  When I travelled home when my Mom was hospitalised for the last time, the fellowship and wise support Doug supplied helped me through one of the most difficult times of my life.

Doug was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and passed away two years ago.  He wrote many books and left behind a challenge for me to study the book of I John, that Doug believed was the most significant and difficult book of the Bible, and so I do.  If you have not read that small book lately, it only takes a little over 18 minutes.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)

“For the Word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective].  It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12 - Amplified Bible

“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” New American Standard Bible, 1977

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” New Living Translation

A friend invited me to a Bible study.  She picked me up and began to drive.  After a while we were in the riches suburb of Atlanta and I was growing a bit doubtful that this would turn out well.  We parked a couple of blocks away because the street was lined with cars.

When we reached the home where the study was to take place it was a mansion that exuded wealth and privilege, and this added to my doubts of the type of gathering it would be.

My friend was a bit stressed as we were ‘not early enough to get a seat in the big room’.  We wended our way through wall-to-wall women!  They were sitting on dozens of chairs crowded into every corner of every room that we could see.  Our only option was to find a seat in the back stairwell.

I was curious and a bit excited as all the women were paging through their Bibles and had pens and notebooks at the ready.  My friend and I opened our Bibles and took out our notebooks and waited.

At exactly 10AM, a voice came through the many speakers installed throughout the mansion, to introduce Kay Arthur.  When Kay took the microphone, she spoke non-stop for exactly one hour about her life (as an introduction) and then launched into the most amazing study I had ever attended.

For years I attended that weekly study and applied several times to attend her Reach Out Week Away conferences.  Her ‘precept-upon-precept’ classes opened my heart and mind to deepen my approach to God’s Word.  Over the years she was like a friend to me, encouraging me to pick my own topics, create my own workshops and teach Scripture with the passion that only comes from His inspiration and creativity.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)

Colossians 2:6-7 (3 min 41 sec)

By David Guzik

“For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

“I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument.  For even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ.

“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.” Colossians 2:107

While living in Smyrna Georgia, I got an insignificant job working in the office of The Navigators, a para-ministry that stressed the call for each of us to disciple others.  My duties included a complicated type of bookkeeping (I knew nothing of bookkeeping).

I also was responsible to write newsletters and reports and designed various materials to be used in local presentations.  It was stressful for me because I was intimidated by this group of dedicated Christians who memorised Scripture for fun.

It was a privilege to be discipled by Don and Elaine Lanier.  They were actually the leaders of the local group and a most amazing couple.  They introduced me to The Navigator 2.7 Disciple Series.

Through the series, we learned effective ways to pray, to read Scripture, to share our faith and to …memorise Scripture (for fun).  They even came to Australia, where I was challenged to reengage with the ministry.  In the following years, I had the privilege of taking many through the 2.7 Series to help them grow more soundly into the image of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)

WeakEnd Assignment – Your Barnabus?

By Eyewitness Bible Series (15 min 30 sec)

“After considerable time had passed, about three years or so, the Jews plotted together to kill him (Saul/ Paul), but their plot became known to Saul.  They were also watching the city’s gates day and night so they could kill him; but his disciples took him at night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a large basket.

“When he arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple.  However, Barnabas (Son of Encouragement) took him and brought him to the apostles,

“...and described to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to him, and how at Damascus Saul had preached openly and spoken confidently in the name of Jesus.  So, he was with them, moving around freely as one among them in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord.”  Acts 9:23-28

I suspect we all wonder why certain people come into our lives.  Some love us and some don’t.  Some betray us.  Some strengthen our resolve.  Some hurt us physically and/ or emotionally.  Some forgive us and hope in us.  Some support us in many ways we may never see.

There are those who drain us by being near and those who take us for granted.  There are those who help us stand up, help us walk, help us grow and soar into our own greatness.

All of the people in our family, our friends, acquaintances and those people we barely register are God’s hand in our lives to grow us up into the image of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

Assignment

  1. 1. Set aside an hour and find a place where you will not be disturbed.

  2. 2. Bring your Bible, notebook, something to write with and a refreshment.

  1. 3. Settle in and pray the Lord brings surprising memories of those who He has sent to grow you up in Him.

  1. 4. Open and date a fresh page in your notebook and open your Bible to read these passages:

  •  Acts 4:32-36

  • Acts 13:1-7

  • Acts 15:36-40

  1. 5. As you read, write down any key thoughts you discover of how the Lord used Barnabus in Paul’s life.

  1. 6. Consider your own life.  Choose three people who have ministered to you or challenged you or even hurt you who have helped you grow in the Lord.  Write their names in your notebook with a sentence or two of how the Lord used them in your life.

  1. 7. Take time to write them a thank you note or send them an email letting them know how they have helped you grow up in the Lord.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)
