The Fall by Crossroads Kids’ Club

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.  And he said to the woman, ‘Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?’

"And the woman said to the serpent, ‘From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.’’

“And the serpent said to the woman, ‘You surely shall not die!  For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’

"When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.  Then the eyes of both of them were opened …” Genesis 3:1-7a

God’s original question was, would His children choose to trust and follow Him?  This same question saturates the pages in the many chapters of Job.  The question is now ours to answer every day and every moment as we choose His way or our way.  Will we trust Him enough to follow Him?  What do you say?

Take care, your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene (who prays for you each morning.)

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sins which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith,

“who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3

Who could believe that one small, insignificant person, a dot on the earth could make a difference in the history of the universe?  Job’s last visitor put it this way:

“‘If you sin, how does that affect Him?  If your sins are many, what does that do to Him?  If you are righteous, what do you give to Him, or what does He receive from your hand?  Your wickedness affects only a man like yourself, and your righteousness only the sons of men.’” Job 35:6-8

But this is wrong.  And we learn later that God was greatly affected by the response of this one man and that cosmic issues were at stake.

SHEEP STORY

“Now all the tax-gatherers and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him.  And both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, ‘This man receives sinners and eats with them.’

“And He told them this parable, saying, ‘What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it?  And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

“’And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbours, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’  I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.’” Luke 15:1-7

Great joy breaks out each time God rescues one of His sheep, no matter how far away they may have wandered.  We can trust Him for this even during times when we want to hide from Him.  Isn’t that neat!?

Newsboys - Greatness Of Our God

“Then Nebuchadnezzar in a rage and anger gave orders to bring Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego; then these men were brought before the king. – ‘Now if you are ready, at the moment you hear the sound of the horn, flute, lyre, trigon psaltery, and bagpipe, and all kinds of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, very well.  But if you will not worship, you will immediately be cast into the midst of the furnace of blazing fire; and what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?’

“Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, ‘O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter.  If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king.  But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.’” Job 3:13-18 (selected)

Imagine Job is set in an imaginary court room.  The readers are jurors.  Job is the plaintive in a suit against God.  Job lays out the ‘facts’, he carefully builds his case in anger and satire.  Job feels betrayed, he ‘stomps his feet at God and wanders as close to blasphemy as anyone can.  Yet, his words have a startlingly familiar ring for all of us.  Job gives voice to our most deeply felt complaints against God!

However, if you lose sight of the first chapter of Job, you miss the point.  It is not God who is on trial, it is Job!  And the point of the book is not suffering.  It is not even, ‘Where is God when it hurts?’!  The point of the book is faith:  Where is Job when it hurts?  Where are YOU when it hurts?

WEAKEND ASSIGNMENT - EVIDENCE

“Now having been questioned by the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, ‘The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, Look, here it is!’ or ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.’

“And He said to the disciples, ‘The days shall come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.  And they will say to you, ‘Look there!  Look here!  Do not go away, and do not run after them.

“’For just as the lightening, when it flashed out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day.  But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

“’And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it shall be also in the days of the Son of Man; they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.’” Luke 17:20-27

There is a white business card I always carry with me.  The fact is, I’ve carried this little tattered card for probably 40 years now.  It has a small ink sketch of a rendition of Jesus face and one small question:  ‘If you were arrested for being a Christian today, would there be enough evidence to convict you?’  A simple but sobering question in a world that is searching for answers to so much does not make sense.

Your assignment today is to find that quiet, one-hour again this weekend or today.  Have your Bible, spiritual notebook, writing element and a refreshment with you.  Pray and ask your loving Father to give you insight.

1.    Then write your answer to that question.

2.    Consider how the evidence could be more ‘visible’ to those who are perishing in the darkness.

“’You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do men light a lamp and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.’” John 8:12

You'll Never Walk Alone [Live] – Gaither Music

[God speaking to Job] “’Can you discover the depths of God?  Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?’” Job 11:7

[Daniel speaking to the king] “However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days.’”  Daniel 2:28

“If a trumpet is blown in a city will not the people tremble?  If a calamity occurs in a city has not the Lord done it?  Surely the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants the prophets.  A lion has roared!  Who will not fear?  The Lord God has spoken!  Who can but prophesy?’” Amos 3:7

“And the disciples came and said to Him, ‘Why do You speak to them in parables?’  And He answered and said to them, ‘To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted.

“’For whoever has, to him shall more be given, and he shall have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken from him.  Therefore I speak to them in parables;; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand’” Matthew 13:11-13

The book of Job gives us a peek through a keyhole to better understand the great mysteries surrounding us.  It offers us a glimpse into how the world is run from God’s point of view, including the supernatural activity we know nothing about.

As Job suffers, God is put on ‘trial’.  Job accuses Him of being unfair and making mistakes.  Job is angry, satirical -- feels betrayed for all his good behaviour and earnest efforts.  Job flirts with blasphemy and gives voice to our own most deeply felt, complaints against God when things seem nonsensical.  I wonder why?

·      USA – Pray the Lord will demonstrate His power in unexpected and uniting ways during these times of unrest and confusion.  Help hearts settle and rest in Him alone.  Let the truth of God’s Word and ways, overcome the drive to destroy our founding, Bible-based values.  And pray for Christ-centre, Bible-based revival in the USA and religious freedom for Christians wherever they may be.

·      USA President Donald Trump – As Christians, we know God has a plan for the USA through this man.  If you doubt the importance of his appointment, just look at the baseless antagonism against him. Surely Satan is NOT happy and means to thwart God’s plan.  Pray someone helps President Trump and Melania understand and strengthen their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  Pray they both have an insatiable hunger to read God’s Word for themselves.  Pray God sends a Bible-Believing Christian to regularly disciple them in the Truth.  Pray God shuts the mouths of the false prophets who regularly circle around them.

·      Pray for Paul – he continues to search for a job.  God has a plan for him to capture his heart someway.

·      Pray for those in these countries who read the WeakDay Devotion – Hong Kong, Israel, Sweden, Russia, USA, Canada, Ukraine, Poland, UK, France, Australia, UAE, Germany, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Ireland, American Samoa, Brazil, The Philippines, Estonia, Singapore, China, India, India.  Thank the Lord for allowing this blog to be reaching around His world to an international audience in mysterious and far-flung geographic locations.

·      Hans – a dear friend in Germany, continues his immunotherapy for lung cancer.  His MRI went well.  He has a brain CT scan today and has asked for prayer for strength through the pain, patience and God’s mercy.  Continue to pray for his healthcare providers and that he is surrounded by faithful and compassionate Christian friends who will support him through this journey.  Pray for his Mom (age 83) who is unwell herself, that their time together will be filled with extraordinary good memories and lots of love.

·      Isaias and Judith (Ambassadors for Christ the Philippines) – the Philippines has been devastated by constant batterings from typhoons and floods.  Take a moment to visit their new website:  https://afcph.org/ to learn more.  Many believers have lost everything, including worship centres, computer equipment, musical instruments and sound systems.  China’s threat grows.  Pray for the leaders, administrators, workers and teachers.  Pray our Father keep these servants strong, in good health, safe and supported and that they keep a balance in their lives.  They need funds badly now.  Please take a moment to send encouragement to Isaias Catorce, who teaches and leads the groups at icatorce@gmail.com

·      J&R – recently had the privilege of sharing the Gospel with them and would appreciate prayers that God uses His words in their hearts to draw them to Him for Eternity!

Pray for those in full-time service

Pray to uphold our Christian leaders – that they never compromise God’s Word, are bold and courageous in the face of evil.  Pray for their wisdom, safety, ingenuity, strength and for their families.

Pray for those with ongoing health concerns

Many of us have family, friends and loved ones with fragile health.  Pray God takes special care with them and protects them in practical ways and that the Lord will have mercy on them during this challenging time.

Does God Promise Health and Wealth?

The Beat with Allen Parr

[Eliphaz’ encouragement] “’But as for me, I would seek God, and I would place my cause before God; who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.  He gives rain on the earth, and sends water on the fields, so that He sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.

“’He frustrates the plotting of the shrewd, so that their hands cannot attain success.  He captures the wise by their own shrewdness and the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.  By day they meet with darkness and grope at noon as in the night.  But He saves from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the mighty.  So, the helpless has hope, and unrighteousness must shut its mouth.’” Job 5:8-16

The book of Job opens with God and Satan involved in something resembling a wager.  Satan claims Job is only loyal because God has ‘put a hedge around him,’ and scoffs at Him.  He hints this proves that God is obviously unworthy of love without manipulating others.  That God only attracts people like Job because He ‘bribes’ them to follow Him.  Satan hisses, ‘If times get tough, they will quickly abandon You.’

God loves Job and accepts the challenge that will test Satan’s theory.  Job’s response to the worst of circumstances was critical.  Do blessings and prosperity really matter?  Does success come because we try to be obedient?  Even today, people watch us to see what we will do when things go ‘wrong’.

Take care, your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene (who prays for you each morning.)
