Whose Betrayed?

“’Oh, that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of My people! O that I had in the desert a wayfarers lodging place; that I might leave My people and go from them~ For all of them are adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. And they bend their tongue like their bow; lies and not truth prevail in the land; for they proceed to evil, and they do not know Me.’ Declares the Lord.

“Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Behold, I will refine them and assay them; for what else can I do, because of the daughter of My people? Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit; with this mouth one speaks peace to his neighbour, but inwardly he sets an ambush him. Shall I not punish them for these things? Declares the Lord. ‘On a nation such as this shall I not avenge Myself?’” Jeremiah 9:1-3, 7-9

“And that is the precise cycle of anger, grief, forgiveness, jealousy, love, pain that God Himself went through. The prophets show God struggling for a language, any language, that might break through to His people. – Sometimes his love and anger seemed to collide. But at last, al alternatives exhausted, God concluded that He must give up: ‘What else can I do because of the sin of my people?’ *

Does it seem easier to consider God’s feelings now? Just wait till this series ends. The book Disappointment With God, by Philip Yancey has touched many because it does make sense to us all...we have all felt feelings of being rejected and we all long to be loved and appreciated for what we are and our contribution.

What More !

“When Israel was a youth I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son; the more they went from them; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning incense to idols. Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk. I took them in My arms; but they did not know that I healed them, I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love. And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws; and I bent down and fed them. – How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I surrender you, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zebolim? My heart is turned over within Me. All My compassions are kindled.” Hosea 11:1-4, 8-9

“In choosing Israel, God was seeking such a relationship. He wanted what any parent wants; a happy household of children who return their parent’s love. His voice sings with pride as He reminisces about the early days: ‘Is not Ephraim my dear son, the child in whom I delight?’ But the joy fades away as God abruptly shifts from the perspective of a parent to that of a lover, a wounded lover. ‘What have I done wrong?’ He demands in a tone of sadness, and horror and rage.” *

And what does a parent hope for from their children? And what does a lover long from the one they care about? Well you know...

Never trust Him again...

“And Abraham came near and said, ‘Wilt Thou indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt Thou indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from Thee to do such a thing, so to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from Thee! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?’ So the Lord said, ‘If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account.’” Genesis 18:23-26

“When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. But it greatly displeased Jonah, and he became angry. And he prayed to the Lord and said, ‘Please Lord, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore, in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that Thou art a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity. Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life.’” Jonah 3:10-4:3

“Jonah, sulking under a shrivelled vine, admitted he had suspected God’s soft heart all along. – Thus the whole mad cap scenario of balky prophet, ocean storm, and whale detour came about because Jonah could not trust God – could not, that is trust Him to be harsh and unrelenting toward Nineveh. As Robert Frost summed up the story, ‘After Jonah, you could never trust God not to be merciful again.’” *

If nothing else, the Old Testament shows us repeatedly that God’s capability to use power is unlimited, yet the tender heartedness of the Holy One causes Him to listen and long to hear the voice of His children as they understand His will in their lives and TRUST Him.

Merciful Probation

“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, wih whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow. In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the Word of Truth, so that we might be, as it were, the first fruits among His creatures.” James 1:13-18

“When the prophets complained loudly about God’s hiddenness, God didn’t argue. He agreed with them - To Jeremiah, God expressed His disgust with what He saw in Israel: dishonest gain, the shedding of innocent blood, oppression, extortion. – To Ezekiel, God explained that once Israel’s rebellions had passed a certain point, He simply ‘gave them over’ to their sins. He withdrew, letting the people choose their own way and bear the consequences. To Zechariah, He said, ‘When I called, they did not listen’ so when they called, I would not listen. My slowness to act is a sign of mercy, not of weakness.’ When God did not punish quickly, the people of Israel presumed He had lost His power. God’s restraint marked an interlude of mercy, a time of probation He was granting Israel.” *

We all make our own choices...

Another Way?

“”Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I, Send me!’ And He said, ‘Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on listening, but do not perceive; keep on looking, but do not understand. Render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim, lets they see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and return to be healed.’” Isaiah 6:8-10

“God talked back, defending the way He ran the world. He lashed out, stormed and wept. And this is what He said: “I am not silent; I have been speaking through my prophets. God did not consider ‘mere words’ an inferior form of proof. Miracles, after all, had never had much lasting impact on the Israelites’ faith; but the prophets words inscribe a permanent record, to be passed down over generations, of God’s overtures toward His people.” *

God’s hope is everlasting. In the worst of times, His light glows to those who will see; His Word sinks into some. In this remnant God continues to build His people. How painful it must be for the Father to reach out and hear so much criticism, dissatisfaction and rebellion. It’s an amazing wonder He ever sent His Son to save us! But He did, ever believing some would listen.

Hear Me!

“As for the prophets: My heart is broken within me, all my bones tremble; I have become like a drunken man, even like a man overcome with wine, because of the Lord and because of His Holy Words. For the land is full of adulterers; for the land mourns because of the curse. The pastures of the wilderness have dried up. Their course also is evil, and their might is not right. For both prophet and priest are polluted even in My house I have found their wickedness,’ declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:9-11

“For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; and avoid such men as these.

“For the time will come when they will no longer endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away their ears from the Truth, and will turn aside to myths.” II Timothy 3:2-5, 4:3-4

“But the most amazing feature of the prophets is not their ‘modern’ outlook or their passionate cry of disappointment. The reason these seventeen books merit a close look is that they include God’s own reply to the prophets’ bracing questions.” *

It took Christ coming and His gracious sacrifice to re-establish the personal intimacy of communication once more.

Thoroughly Modern

“Thou O Lord, dost rule forever, Thy throne is from generation to generation. Why7 dost Thou forget us forever; why dost Thou forsake us so long? Restore us to Thee, O Lord that we may be restored. Renew our days as of old. Unless Thou hast utterly rejected us, and art exceedingly angry with us.” Lamentations 5:19-22

“More passionate than anyone in history, the prophets of Israel gave voice to the feeling of disappointment with God. ‘Why do godless nations flourish?’ they asked. ‘Why is there such poverty and depravity in the world?’ ‘Why are so few miracles?’ ‘Where are You, God?’ ‘Why do You always forget us?’ ‘Why do You forsake us so long?’ Show Yourself; break Your silence. For God’s sake, literally, ACT!” *

God’s Word is timeless because we all have these questions. Yet, we have His Word to comfort us as we travel through times of confusion and weakness and fear. It is important to remember it is a personal journey and we have a personal responsibility to make choices.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Thy presence, and do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit. – For Thou dost not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; Thou art not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God Thou will not despise.” Psalm 51 10-12, 16-17

Striking Change

“Then he [Elijah] came there to a cave, and lodged there; and behold the Word of the Lord came to him and He said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ And he said, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, torn down Thine altars and killed Thy prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.’ So He said, ‘Go forth, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.’ And behold, the Lord was passing by!

“And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind and earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing. And it came about when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold a voice came to him and said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’” I Kings 19:9-13

“Apparently the fireball on Mount Carmel had no lasting impact on Elijah either. Terrified for his life, the prophet put forty days’ distance between himself and Queen Jezebel, Ahab’s vengeful consort. And when God next met with Elijah, He did not appear in a fire, or in a great and powerful wind, or in an earthquake. Rather, He came in a whisper, a thin, small voice -- almost like silence – a preview of a striking change to come.” *

Wind, earthquake, fire. Interesting that these immense “natural” elements are chosen. Think of the calm after each one and the relief you feel and sense once they “pass” by. Have you ever had a leader in your life that you followed because you respected the way they followed their vision? How easy it is to forget that God is not our co-pilot but our pilot and WHEN we follow His lead, our lives are a blessing to others, as well as blessed by an increased intimacy with the Father.

Fireworks

“And Elijah came near to all the people and said, ‘How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.’ But the people did not answer him a word. Then Elijah said to the people, ‘I alone am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men. Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will put a fire under it. Then you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, He is God.’ And all the people answered and said, ‘That is a good idea.’” I Kings 18:21-24

We all know what happened that dramatic day. God allowed Elijah to dramatize the moment by dousing his wood and sacrifice with heaps of water, after he patiently waited for the impotent priests of Baal to call down fire from heaven, then God lit them both and burned everything to cinder in moments. Those of that day, could SEE His hand at work, yet they wandered away once more. The truth is “If God consistently sent lightning bolts in response to bad doctrine; our planet would sparkle nightly like a Christmas tree.” *

Gift or Giver?

"And the righteous will see and fear, and will laugh at him saying, ‘Behold the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and was strong in his evil desire.’” Psalm 52:6-7

“And He said to him, ‘Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.’” Luke 12:15

“Two things I ask of Thee, do not refuse me before I die; keep deception and lies from me, give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is my portion, lest I be full and deny Thee and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ or lest I be in want and steal, and profane the name of my God.” Proverbs 30:7-9

“A quotation from Oscar Wilde might provide the best epitaph for Solomon: “in this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” As Solomon prospered, “he depended less on God and more on the props around him; the world’s largest harem, a house twice the size of the temple, and army well-stocked with chariots, a strong economy. Success may have eliminated any crises of disappointment with God, but it also seemed to eliminate Solomon’s desire for God at all. The more he enjoyed the world’s good gifts, the less he thought about the Giver.” *

How Much IS Enough?

“Also I collected for myself silver and gold, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I provided for myself male and female singers and the pleasures of men – many concubines. Then I became great and increased more than all preceded me in Jerusalem.

“My wisdom also stood by me. And all that my eyes desired I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart was pleased because of all my labour and this was my reward for all my labour. Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labour which I had exerted, and behold all was vanity and striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun.

“So I turned to consider wisdom, madness and folly; for what will the man do who will come after the king except what has already been done? And I saw that wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness. The wise man’s eyes are in his head but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I know that one fate befalls them both. Then I said to myself, ‘As is the fate of the fool, it will also befall me.

“Why then have I been extremely wise?’ So I said to myself, ‘This too is vanity.’ For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise man as with the fool, as in the coming days all will be forgotten. And how the wise man and the fool alike die! So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was grevious to me; because everything is futility and striving after wind.” Ecclesiastes 2:8-17

“In one generation, Solomon took Israel from a fledgling kingdom dependent on God for bare survival to a self-sufficient political power. But along the way he lost sight of the original vision to which God had called men. Ironically, by the time of Solomon’s death, Israel resembled the Egypt they had escaped: an imperial state held in place by a bloated bureaucracy and slave labour with an official state religion under the ruler’s command. – The brief shining vision of a covenant nation faded away, and God withdrew His sanction. After Solomon’s death, Israel split in two and slid toward ruin.” *

Flying

“’Do not lay up for yourselves treasure upon earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’” Matthew 6:19-21

“What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? You lust and do not have, so you commit murder. And you are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures." James 4:1-3

“Nine-year old Leo Tolstoy, convinced God would help him fly, dove headfirst out a third-floor window and had his first major crisis of disappointment with God. What child has not fantasized about supernatural powers? And if God ever saw fit to answer some of those prayers, if like a genie in a bottle, He granted us any wish we wanted, wouldn’t we then try to please Him out of gratitude” *, greed or to test His patience? His purpose for our lives is to grow us into the image of His beloved Son, Jesus. So just for today, think about the way Jesus prayed. Interesting study to do too.

Staring at THE Light

“And the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, on the day the Lord binds up the fracture of His people and heals the bruises He has inflicted. Behold, the name of the Lord comes from a remote place; burning is His anger, and dense is His smoke; His lips are filled with indignation, and His tongue is like a consuming fire; and His breath is like an overflowing torrent, which reaches to the neck, to shake the nations back and forth in a sieve, and to put in the jaws of the peoples the bridle which leads to ruin. –And the Lord will cause His voice of authority to be heard and the descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger, and in flame of a consuming fire, in cloudburst, downpour, and hail stones.” Isaiah 26-28, 30

“Trembling has seized the godless, ‘Who among us can live with continual burning?’ -- For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; He will save us.” Isaiah 33:14, 22

Like the story of Isaac Newton’s experiment of staring at a candle flame and nearly going blind, “the Israelites had attempted to live with the Lord of the Universe visibly present in their midst. But, in the end, out of all the thousands who had so gladly fled Egypt, only two survived God’s Presence. If you can barely endure candlelight, how can you gaze at the sun?” *

Disadvantage Five

“’Now then why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, then we shall die. For who is there of all flesh, who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire as we have, and lived. Go near and hear all that the Lord our God says, then speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’” Deuteronomy 5:25-27

“Then they said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us lest we die.’ And Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin.’ So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.” Exodus 20:19-21

There was no margin of error with God. “The Israelites could see clear evidence of God’s presence in the Most Holy Place – but no one dared enter. If you want to know what kind of ‘personal relationship with God’ the Israelites enjoyed, listen to the words of the worshipers themselves.” *

Disadvantage Four

“Command the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be careful to present My offering, My food for My offerings by fire, of a soothing aroma to Me, at their appointed time. And you shall say to them, ‘This is the offering by fire which you shall offer to the Lord; two male lambs one year old without defect as a continual burnt offering every day. You shall offer the one lamb in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight; also a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with a fourth of a hin of beaten oil. It is a continual burnt offering which was ordained in Mount Sinai as a soothing aroma, an offering, an offering by fire to the Lord.” Numbers 28:1-6

“Moses laid down an amazing elaboration of rituals necessary to approach God.” * And each of these rituals substantiated the Israelites stepping just a bit further from God. As I reviewed page after page of them, it was impossible to choose just one. Just think how wonderful it is to serve the Lord this day and focus on His love rather on meeting a tick list of acts and sacrifices!

“’But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet you disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others."  Luke 11:24

Disadvantage Three

“And all the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance. Then they said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, lest we die.” And Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin.’” Exodus 20:18-20

“In addition to these mundane issues, a far more serious problem arose. The closer God drew towards His people, paradoxically, the more distant they felt from Him.” * When Christ came, He WAS the way to intimacy with the Father because He could touch us in ways never imagined before.

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you shall find rest for your soul.’” Matthew 11:28-29
