Unforgiveable - 2

“Then there was brought to Him a demon-possessed man who was blind and dumb, and He healed him, so that the dumb man spoke and saw.  And all the multitudes were amazed, and began to say, ‘This man cannot be the Son of David, can He?’

“But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, ‘This man casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.’

“And knowing their thoughts He said to them, ‘Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself shall not stand.’” Matthew 12:22-25

“The context of this statement was the persistent refusal of the scribes to recognise the working of the Holy Spirit in the life of Jesus, and instead, they attributed His miraculous powers to Beelzebub, the prince of demons.”*

They brought a man to Jesus.  He healed him of blindness and the inability to speak.  ALL the multitudes were amazed and began to wonder.  The Pharisees were jealous of the attention given to Jesus and attacked in a simplistic way trying to divert the people from the obvious.  Jesus gave the Pharisees a quiet lesson about practicality and common sense.  But of course their jealousy blinded them to the Truth – to the Saviour.

Unforgiveable

“And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, ‘He is possessed by  Beelzebul,’ and ‘He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.’  And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan?  And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.  And if a house is divided against itself that house will not be able to stand.

“And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished!  But no one can enter the strong man’s house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.

“’Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sim’ – because they were saying, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’” Mark 3:22-30

“There are some Christian people whose lives are haunted by a terrible fear.  The fear is that they have committed the ‘unforgiveable sin’.  They fear that all will not be well for them on judgment day, and in the meantime they are to be restricted in their usefulness to God, having been spiritually maimed.”*

In the next few segments we will look at the topic of the “unforgiveable sin”, but for today know this:  As a Christian, you may wonder if you have committed this sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit, but this is not a sin you should worry about.  This sin concerns the heart attitude of purposeful unbelief and unrepentance.  Deliberately and continually rejecting the work of the Holy Spirit is actually a rejection of God Himself.  The religious leaders here were accusing Jesus of blaspheming God...however it was the religious leaders who were actually doing this by refusing to see the message of God’s grace through Christ, the Redeemer.

Forgive Your Brother

“Never pay back evil for evil to anyone.  Respect what is right in the sight of all men.  If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.  Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine I will repay,’ says the Lord.” Romans 12:17-19

“’If therefore you are presenting you offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.”  Matthew 5:23-24

“Therefore we have no right to expect forgiveness if we are unforgiving to someone else.  In fact, our being willing to forgive others is part of our repentance.”*

We love because He first loved us and we are an example of His love and forgiveness to others.  Now this may seem so impractical in the world we live in, yet, it is one of the distinctions of a Christian to those I call “pre-Christians”; those who do not know Him yet and are looking for excuses not to meet Him.  It is God’s plan you know...that WE are to represent Him!

Forgive-Forget

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9

“And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let each of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38

“’And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  {For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, Amen.}  But if you do not forgive men, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.’”Matthew 6:12-15

“Scripture is clear that we need to confess our sins and repent of them before God, and we must extend the same forgiveness towards others that we anticipate God will show toward us.  I cannot receive forgiveness from God, whilst refusing to forgive someone else.”*

When we eventually kneel at the cross and offer our lives, such as they are to the Father, we come “without one plea” helpless and dependent on Christ’s payment offered in grace to us as a gift...we are forgiven.

As the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our life, we feel Him as He convicts us of any stubborn unforgiveness we bear toward others.  So we offer this to Him and ask Him to give us the strength to forgive those who have wronged us.  As we do, we also realise that forgiving is not the same as forgetting.  Remembering an abuse, for instance, may help us protect ourselves in the future, yet we can forgive when we remember how much He forgave us!

Bridge

“The next day he [John] saw Jesus coming to him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!  This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’”John 1:29-30

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God even to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13

“God forgives because He is just, and therefore for God not to forgive would be unjust and immoral.  To question God’s forgiveness is to question His justice and moral integrity.  We must never, and need never do that.”*

From the time Christ could reason in His form as a man, He knew His destiny and purpose.  He was to be the “bridge” across the “gap” caused from our sin choices that divide us from the Father-God.  This “bridge” is built with Christ’s sacrificed body.  When you trust in His gracious gift, and accept His special “ticket”, you can walk across safely to hope or you can choose to stay on the other side!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

A Trick !

“let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead – by this name this man stands here before you in good health.

“He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the very cornerstone.  And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved.”  Acts 4:10-12

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.’” John 14:6

“It is this [doubt] that lies at the base of the continuous sense of guilt experienced by so many.  In effect, as they think of God’s dealings with their sin, they are bypassing the cross and its significance.  The devil will attack the sufficiency and the efficacy of the cross, for on the cross sin was destroyed and through the cross Satan was doomed.  The tragedy is that many do not believe that!”*

Satan delights in distracting God’s children.  One of his best tricks is telling the truth about our sin and reminding us how merciful God is – both are true.  Yet, God did not forgive our sin by His mercy, but because the demanded payment for our sin was paid in full.  Without knowing this it would be easy to wonder if God still loves us today.  We could wonder and fear that His mercy and patience has finally been exhausted!  But it is not His mercy we stand on, it is His justice – His ONCE for ALL payment alone that satisfies the debt of sin.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Base of Guilt

“And the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.”  Genesis 3:21

“But we see Him who has been made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour, that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.  For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.”  Hebrews 2:9-10

“In Him, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of His grace.” Ephesians 1:7

“As long as I think of forgiveness as the result of God being merciful to me, I am left with the realisation that there is no moral obligation on God’s part to forgive.  Therefore I may conclude that I have sinned once too often, have exhausted His mercy, and whereas He may have forgiven me before, He is unlikely to do so again.  It is this that lies at the base of the continuous sense of guilt experienced by many.”*

When Christ said from the cross:  It is finished!” that is just what He meant.  The debt – all the debt for all the sin of everyone – was paid.  It is an unimaginable amount of credit waiting for anyone who accepts Christ’s terms to cover all their personal sin debt and there is no interest or surprise fine print or hidden costs to be paid by us to cover our debt.  Only His payment is good.  There is no other faith in the world that offers freedom from sin and the guilt that haunts so many!  This is Christ’s great bonus gift to those who believe in His personal sacrifice for them!  And to offer to make up for our sin is mistrusting He has enough to pay the debt.

Value of Penance

“By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.  In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His son to be the propitiation [full, complete, accurately appropriate payment] for our sins.  Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

“This is why penance is unnecessary.  To insist on any form of penance is to undermine the sufficiency of the work of Christ.  I cannot contribute to the penalty paid for my sin, neither do I need to, for payment has been made in FULL.  Therefore on the basis of God’s justice I can be forgiven.”*

We can be deceived by the chief of liars that somehow God has missed one of our sins.  You know, one of those little ones we keep hidden from everyone.  We might begin to worry as we meet other Christians who seem different.  After all, comparison was involved in the first sin!  So we begin to fear that we’re not completely forgiven – not good enough yet.  We know God said He would forgive us in I John 1:9, but did He really mean all?

So we search for the sin/sins.  We start changing our behaviour (more praying, more time at Bible study, more giving to the church) thinking we MUST do something.  But it is a lie, for all that had to be paid HAS been paid...we must rest in that and trust that God keeps His Word.

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.”  I John 4:9-10, 18

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Love & Justice

“But with righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; and He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.  Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, and faithfulness the belt about His waist.” Isaiah 11:4-5

“’For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.’” John 3:16

“For Christ also died for sins once of all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit,” I Peter 3:18

“It is perfectly true that in the heart of God it is His love and mercy towards us that made the cross an event in history.  But having sent Christ who dies upon the cross as our substitute, it is now [and forever more will be] on the basis of justice that God deals with our sin.  Once the demands of His law satisfied God is legally and morally obligated to forgive us!  This is the basis on which we claim and accept forgiveness.”*

A judge in court can have mercy on you, but a fine has to be paid for before you are cleared and free.  Our Father-God loves us and longs for us to come to Him so He can free us from our sins.  That is a choice only the individual can make!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

God's Loophole

“Then the lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.  And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die.’” Genesis 2:15-17

“Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed?  For the outcome of those things is death.  But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:21-23

“Justice and mercy appear in themselves to be incompatible.  To exercise justice and mercy towards the same person at the same time in regard to the same thing is not possible.  If I went to court to face a charge of breaking the speed limit in my car and was found to be guilty, the judge would have a choice of the options.  – Either deal with me mercifully and let me go free, or he could deal with me justly and enforce the penalty of my misdemeanour.  But he could not do both. – the two are incompatible with each other.”*

Our Father God never lies.  “...without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”

To keep His word, He had to find another way to ensure you and I could enjoy l fellowship with Him...both now and into eternity.  He found the only loophole and the price was the life of His perfect Son, Jesus Christ!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene
