Personal Notes - Psalm 139:18 (Part 1)

“If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with Thee”.

Counting involves pride and here the Lord show you the futility of trying to even imagine how faithfully He thinks of you every moment of your life. Like a child who has learned to count to 100 sitting on a beach trying to count just the grains of sand they can put into a sand pail – we can’t imagine, let alone appreciate the value He places on us. But we can remember the demonstration of His love for us, thank Him and love those He brings into our lives.

“By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that WE might LIVE through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but the HE loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (complete and perfect payment) for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” I John 4:9-11

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:17 (Part 2)

“How precious also are Thy thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!”

That He would regard you and me in His thoughts is amazing and that His thoughts are so constant! We can see this constancy through His Word. And these thoughts are built upon His amazing love for each of us. He even regards those we do not love or those we forget.

“For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake, but My lovingkindness will not be removed from you, and My covenant of peace will not be shaken.’ says the Lord who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10

“Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short that it cannot save; neither is His ear so dull that it cannot hear.” Isaiah 59:1

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:17

“How precious also are Thy thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!”

“Keep me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of Thy wings.” Psalm 17:8

“Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, ‘Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!’ Nathanael said to Him, ‘How do You know me?’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.’ Nathanael answered Him, ‘Rabbi You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.’” John 1:47-50

Remember and meditate on the depth and breadth and inexhaustibility of God’s love toward you. Just imagine that as you are reading this, wherever you are, whatever else is happening around you, God, your Father is thinking about you and watching over you. We learn this by reading and thinking about His Word - for who can know the thoughts of God except through His Word? And although the Mighty, Omnipotent God is concerned with maintaining nature and all other events in history His thoughts are also of you and those you love. He even remembers those you forget.

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:16

“My frame was not hidden from Thee, When I was made in secret. And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth.”

“And as He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was in order that the works of God might be displayed in him.’” John 9:3

In workshops I do about self esteem, I ask people to write on a piece of paper three things they would like to change about the way they look and time them. Then I ask them to do the same thing for three things they really like about themselves. You will know the results before I can even say it. Psalm 139 affirms how precious we are just the way we are. The Lord designed our frame – what He would build upon, even the hidden parts (every weakness, no matter at what age). He skilfully created us, not haphazardly and in secret where only He could appraise His creation – “in the depths of the earth”

“Thy hands fashioned and made me altogether, -- Didst Thou not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese; clothe me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews? Thou hast granted me life and lovingkindness; and Thy care has preserved my spirit.” Job 10:8a, 10-12

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:15

“I will give thanks to Thee for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Thy works, and my soul knows it very well.”

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. For we ARE His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:4-10

Even in your worst moments your soul knows it – even when your head refuses to hear that you ARE His workmanship, PERFECT for His work. Now that is God!

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:14

“I will give thanks to Thee for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Thy works, and my soul knows it very well.”

“And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groaning too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:26-27

Sometimes we can see and know very clearly we are doing wrong; other times our heart runs and tries to hide the realisation from our head (rational thoughts). During those times it is good to know your soul knows the truth – even when your head refuses to hear.

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:113

“For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother’s womb.”

“On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing moulded will not say to the moulder, ‘Why did you make me like this,’ will it? Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honourable use, and another for common use?” Romans 9:20-21

“’For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor for your body, as to what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing? – And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life’s span?” Matthew 6:25, 27

“’But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.’” Matthew 10:31

God don’t make no junk! Right this moment look at your hand. At the back. See the pattern of your skin, the colour and texture, the way the veins are all ordered, the knuckles of your fingers? Open and close your hand. Turn your hand over. See all those lines? No one in the world has the same markings on their hands! (The Lord knows every part of every one of the 6,675,893,688 people in the world (at 7:22AM Sydney time)). He knows your inward parts – heart and brain, thinking and feeling. Even the feelings of great emptiness for your Father and His love for you that drove you to Him. Most of all, He did WEAVE you – you are handmade in every detail!

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:12

“Even the darkness is not dark to Thee, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to Thee."

People like the idea of degrees of good and bad. Perhaps it comes from all the measurement we live with from the time we are born – from height and weight to first response, through school with grades, at work with performance measures, our health over time – everything is measured, compared with others and rationalised as good, better or best. Yet, with God there is only one measure: are you His or not? He does not degree sin or “performance”, men do. He asks about your personal relationship with Him.

“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.” James 2:10

“for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:11 (Part 2)

“If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,’”

"The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, and those who were sitting in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light dawned.’” Matthew 4:16

“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” I John 1:5-6

“’What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows’” Matthew 10:27-31

Oswald Chambers said what is happening in your life right now may not be a lesson just for you. Think about that.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” II Corinthians 1:3-4

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:11 (Part 1)

“If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,’”

“In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness , and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:4-5

“For God, who said, ‘Light shall shine out of darkness ,’ is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” II Corinthians 4:6

My dearest friend here recently lost her father. Her brother and mother are now hospitalized and in serious condition. Many of you are facing or dealing with the loss of someone you care about. This verse reminds you that in your moments of Darkness – (for me when I lost my Dad and then my Mom), that you have the privilege -- as His child -- to rest in the reality and truth that where your Heavenly Father is, no darkness can remain. Christ is your example for walking through the Shadow of death.

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:10

“Even there Thy hand will lead me, And Thy right hand will lay hold of me.”

When I thought of His right hand laying hold of me, it was a wonder to me that His hand would guide me all the way to Australia (half a world away) and sustain me there to call me to a new way to serve Him.

“But the righteousness based on faith speaks thus, ‘Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is to bring Christ down), or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.) But what does it say? “The Word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart’ – that is, the Word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved;” Romans 10:6-9

Before you were a gleam in your parents’ eyes, the Lord knew you and loved you and no matter how far you try to run or hide, He quietly (sometimes loudly) stays beside you and within you and over you -- not to hurt you or haunt, but to show you what AMAZING GRACE and LOVE really is.

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (full and complete and perfect payment) for our sins.” I John 4:10

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:9

“If I take the wings of dawn, If I dwell to the remotest part of the sea,”

“But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, ‘Arise and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ And he arose and went; and behold there wan an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians , who was in charge of all her treasure; and he had come to Jerusalem to worship.” Acts 8:26-27

“’but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.’” Acts 1:8

As a new Christian, I earnestly desired to serve the Lord;and thought this meant going to some remote, primitive place with physical dangers at every corner. As it turned out it did, but not in the way I imagined. To sustain me through my journey, He gave me those three verses -- and one day, all alone, I took the wings of dawn – to serve Him in Australia and New Zealand (lands I barely knew existed) Yet even before I came, the Father knew His plans for me! I now understand the lessons He had for me and know in my heart that my time here has been training for another place. I wonder when and how He will send me there.

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:8

“If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold Thou art there.”

Sometimes, you have moments when you feel so very close to the Father; and in those times, it as if you soar to ascend to heaven. You expect He will be close to you there because YOU have made the effort to be close. However, the work of His grace is so amazing that even when you are in your most rebellious and deep in wilful and determined sinful behaviour or thought – when you are dwelling and making your bed in Sheol – even then, at your worst, He is just as close (and perhaps we do not see Him, because He is hugging us so very close during those times.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is THE gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which Christ prepared beforehand, that we should walk in then.” Ephesians 2:8-10

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:7

“Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence?”

Is there a place where You are not, Father? Where is this place away from Thy Spirit. Of course there is no place You are not! Can I run from Thy presence even when I am in pain or shame or disappointment? “Oh no, I will never leave you or forsake you”, You say to me. And why? Because You, as the Holy Spirit live within me forever and ever.

“’For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.’” John 6:40

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.’” John 10:27-30

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:6

“Such knowledge is too wonderful to me; it is too high, I cannot attain to it.”

Remember the day you knew for certain that Christ had saved you and knew is new ways that He had been working in all your life to bring you to Him? Too wonderful to me – a sinner saved by His amazing grace and although I cannot attain to it, I can rest in it.

“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He began asking His disciples, saying, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do YOU say that I am?’ And Simon Peter answered and said, ‘Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.’

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:5

“Thou has t enclosed me behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me.”

When the Lord encloses you He makes sure there are no gaps in the enclosure – He completely shuts you inside --He surrounds you – like a great and impregnable hedge. It is as if He is both inside you (with the Holy Spirit) and totally around you (as the Father) as He covers you with His love. And when you fall (because you do and will) He covers not just on one side but behind and before you (as Christ walks with you)- whichever way you might fall He is there for you. His hand is upon you, sometimes carrying you – to set you apart for His purposes, not to stop you, but to assure you that you are never alone!

“’Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you, He will not fail you or forsake you.’” Deuteronomy 31:5

“Then Satan answered the Lord, ‘Does Job fear God for nothing? Hast Thou not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.’” Job 1:9-10

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:4

“Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, Thou dost know it all.”

Before – I have to give some consideration to what I say…no such thing as, “it just slipped out without thinking.”

All – again…not just a few of my words I’m thinking, but all, even when I don’t think I am thinking.

“’Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated? But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart comes evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. These are the things which defile the man;’” Matthew 15:17-20

Zig Ziglar talks about “stinking thinking” as being our downfall. He is a gifted Bible scholar and teacher even though most think of him as a business motivational speaker. So think about what your are thinking about today because it is important to your Father.

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:3

“Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down, and art intimately acquainted with all my ways.”

Scrutinise your path – for things that would/could stumble you in the past, present and future. When God scrutinises, He looks closely, carefully and thoroughly to examine and inspect something with a penetrating look. It comes from a Latin word that means to search even to the rags. And He searches intimately – completely, from the inside out, for all He know about you, He also knows how your heart leans. And He is through. He looks at all – not some or part of your ways; and those open and closed to others. Your ways – habits, preferences are what preoccupy your Father!

“For all things are for your sakes, that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart, but though the outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal." Personal Notes - Psalm 139:2

“Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thought from afar.”

My Father KNOWS – He actually knows where I am and what I am doing right now. As I SIT – to rest or RISE – to walk in independence. He UNDERSTANDS – He does not just hear or know of me, but understands my motives and my heart and – well, me. How could God care THAT much?
MY THOUGHTS – my inner heart, even those thoughts I am able to keep hidden from others, each individual one…this one now – He knows every one of them. Whether He is near; and especially FROM AFAR – when I am thinking I am running away, too.

“No temptation has overtaken byou but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.” I Corinthians 10:13

Personal Notes - Psalm 139:1

“O Lord, Thou hast searched me and known me. Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thought from afar. Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down, and art intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, Thou dost know it all. Thou has t enclosed me behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful to me; it is too high, I cannot attain to it.” 1-6

Every week since 1973, I have read Psalm 139 at least once. That is about 1,820 times if only once a week. And for all that reading, to this day, the Lord continues to “unpack” His amazing message to me from these 417 words in 22 sentences. Starting today, I will share these insights with you and pray if the Lord has also shared insights about these verses with you that you will please email your insights to me, so that others may benefit from His teaching in your life.

O Lord, Thou hast searched me and known me.”

Searched – Why should He even care to search one like me – a speck on this earth? Yet i am made right and made His very daughter – the King’s kid. How He regards me! When you search for something earnestly you search with light to obliterate the shadows, you look under and upon other things. You move things around to see if what you are looking for is behind something else or under something else. And with God, the word used here is Known. That’s past tense…He has always known you.

Commentaries - Psalm 139:1-6 (Part 2)

“O Lord, Thou hast searched me and known me. Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thought from afar. Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down, and art intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, Thou dost know it all. Thou has t enclosed me behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful to me; it is too high, I cannot attain to it.”

“The conception of intimate personal relation between God and man is perhaps more remarkably and forcefully dealt with in this song than in any other in the whole collection”, according to “An Exposition of the Whole Bible” by G. Campbell Morgan.

God begins by stating the great facts so there is no doubt that the Father knows you personally – every motion, emotion and habit, even to the simplest of sitting and standing. He knows thought no matter how far away we try to wander. All ways and words are intimately known to your Father.

Commentaries - Psalm 139:1-6

“O Lord, Thou hast searched me and known me. Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thought from afar. Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down, and art intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, Thou dost know it all. Thou has t enclosed me behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful to me; it is too high, I cannot attain to it.”

In his book, “The Word”, Warren Wiersbe says of this opening section of the Psalm, “He knows what you do. He knows you personally and intimately, so don’t try to fool Him. Be open and honest with God, and rest in His love. His eye is upon you,, and you have nothing to fear.

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love because He first loved us.” I John 4:18

Stay near God's Word. Take care. Your servant & friend in Christ, Darlene

PS: Please continue to pray for Carla’s brother, Joe, who was rushed to the hospital with a possible brain injury, and for her mom who is distraught because of this. Pray also for the continually improving health of David and Adrian.
