Hungry?

“And when He saw the multitudes, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.  And opening His mouth He began to teach them saying,

“‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“’Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

“’Blessed are the gentle for they shall inherit the earth.

“’Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.’”
Matthew 5:1-6

“To hunger for something is to be needing it and wanting it.  Hunger is not a satisfied feeling, but a yearning for something.  Jesus used this word when He said, ‘Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness.’*

These statements by Jesus are part of the Sermon on the Mount...He challenges us all:  the poor in spirit (humble and insecure), the gentle (soft hearted toward others), those who mourn (over the sin they recognise in themselves and in the world around them) or the hungry (who seek to satisfy a need within for something better).  Taking action to soothe your grief and taking action to satisfy your hunger or thirst for righteousness always leads you to the Lord.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Know, Be Like & Serve

“Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?’  Jesus said to him, ‘I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.  If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.’

“Philip said to Him, ‘Lord show us the Father, and it is enough for us.’  Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip?  He who has seen Me has seen the Father, how do you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

“’Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me?  The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.  Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me; otherwise believe on account of the works themselves.

“’Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to the Father.  And whatever you ask in My name that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.’” John 14:5-14

“Many things are included in the work of the Spirit, but as His work is Christ-centred, they will come in to the orbit of these three areas.  There will be a hunger to KNOW Jesus Christ, a hunger to BE LIKE Jesus Christ and a hunger to SERVE Jesus Christ, with all the attending means of doing so.”*

There is a saying, “Where God guides, He provides.”  He does this as we walk...and sometimes just in time for our needs.  Certainly I see this in my life so often lately.  His purposes are to appeal to more people.  You are a little beacon (light in the darkness) and the Holy Spirit lights you up so others can find hope.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Get On With It!

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be adequate equipped for every good work.

“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:  preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with  great patience and instruction.”  II Timothy 3:16-42

“I do not feel it is appropriate to ask someone, ‘What is your spiritual gift?’, but we should be asking, ‘What are you doing to serve the Lord Jesus Christ?’*.

Look around today and all this week for opportunities to serve where you are and He will supply your needs according to His riches in glory!

To Serve Not Show

“The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.   Above all keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.  Be hospital to one another without complaint.  As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of manifold grace of God.” I Peter 4:7-10

“Now there are varieties of gifts; but the same Spirit.  And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.  And there are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all in all persons.  But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the COMMON good.” I Corinthians 12:4-7

“It is for this reason [see yesterday’s devotion] that the New Testament speaks of spiritual gifts being given to the church.  I can find a total of twenty-two different abilities described as being ‘gifts’ in the New Testament. --“In light of that, I believe it is a mistake to be ‘gift centred’.  We need rather to be ‘service-centred’.”*

If the gift is more prominent that the service then the direction is wrong.  No gift was ever given so the person with the gift seemed more prominent than the Giver of the gift.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Power Pipe

“Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all affliction so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.  For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.

“But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer; and our hope for you is firmly grounding, knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers of our comfort.” II Corinthians 1:3-7

“but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you’ and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.’” Acts 1:8

“A mark of the Spirit’s presence is a hunger for God to flow through us in blessing and enrichment to others.  Loving after ourselves first has nothing to do with the Christian life, and nothing to do with the work of the Holy Spirit.

“The promise was not to make people powerful for its own sake, but to equip them to serve God and fulfil His plans by bearing witness to the Lord Jesus Christ throughout the world.  If the Spirit of God is within your life, then you will find a new desire to serve...”*

God is with us through it all...even when things do not make sense to us.  He fills us with His power to demonstrate to those around us, His sufficiency.  Yet He doesn’t create us to be physical, emotional or spiritual superman or superwoman.  We are to be learning more each day about depending on Him.  Others watch how we live, as if their life depends on it – for it does.  When we focus on the problems, challenges, difficulties, weaknesses, etc., our pipe gets clogged.  Trust is the way to keep our “pipe of power” flowing with His living water.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Cup or Pipe?

“Behold, a king will reign righteously, and princes will rule justly.  And each will be like a refuge from the wind, and a shelter from the storm, like streams of water in a dry country, like the shade of a huge rock in a parched land.  Then the eyes of those who see will not be blinded, and the ears of those who hear will listen.  And the mind of the hasty will discern the truth, and the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak clearly.” Isaiah 32:1-4

“Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.’”John 7:37-39

“The Holy Spirit comes to us that He might flow through us. – The Spirit is described by Jesus as being like a stream of living water that will flow from within the believer.  The Spirit is not poured into lives like water poured into a cup, but like water poured into a pipe!  When a cup is full, it is full!  But everything that is poured into a pipe will flow through it.  That is a picture of our lives.”*

We “hold” liquid in a cup...from a tap comes fresh water that flows and flows.  I LOVE this illustration...just THINK of being a font of the Father’s love to those around you!  Isn’t that just AMAZING?

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

Fruit or Flowers?

“’For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.’” John 3:16

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:18-20

“But just one last word about this.  We have been looking at the FRUIT of the Spirit, not the FLOWERS of the Spirit!  There is a difference between flowers and fruit.  Flowers are decorative.  They are nice to look at, and having them around makes the atmosphere pleasant.  But fruits are for consumption!  They are there to be eaten by hungry people. -- The Holy Spirit will bear fruit in our lives so that other people may come and eat the fruit.”*

And He makes others hungry for this fruit that satisfies the hungry soul of each heart!  It is a joy and a responsibility to ensure the our fruit is abundant and fresh and ripe and ready for those who are dying without His fruit!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene

New Hunger

“’For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.’” John 3:16

“As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.” Ephesians 4:14-16

“Part of the work of the Holy Spirit therefore, is to create in us a hunger to be like Jesus Christ, so that the qualities that made the life of Christ so attractive and pleasing to God, will increasingly be exhibited in our lives.”*

“And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

When you are hungry, He promises He will supply all your needs...this means to understanding when there is confusion, just enough when there seems nothing left, more than you can imagine when you seem at the end of the rope or in free fall...HE SHALL SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEEDS ACCORDING TO HIS RICHES IN GLORY IN CHRIST JESUS!  Amen and amen...what a way to end the week!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene
