By Answers in Genesis

“For the Word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective].  It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12 - Amplified Bible

“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” New American Standard Bible, 1977

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” New Living Translation

A friend invited me to a Bible study.  She picked me up and began to drive.  After a while we were in the riches suburb of Atlanta and I was growing a bit doubtful that this would turn out well.  We parked a couple of blocks away because the street was lined with cars.

When we reached the home where the study was to take place it was a mansion that exuded wealth and privilege, and this added to my doubts of the type of gathering it would be.

My friend was a bit stressed as we were ‘not early enough to get a seat in the big room’.  We wended our way through wall-to-wall women!  They were sitting on dozens of chairs crowded into every corner of every room that we could see.  Our only option was to find a seat in the back stairwell.

I was curious and a bit excited as all the women were paging through their Bibles and had pens and notebooks at the ready.  My friend and I opened our Bibles and took out our notebooks and waited.

At exactly 10AM, a voice came through the many speakers installed throughout the mansion, to introduce Kay Arthur.  When Kay took the microphone, she spoke non-stop for exactly one hour about her life (as an introduction) and then launched into the most amazing study I had ever attended.

For years I attended that weekly study and applied several times to attend her Reach Out Week Away conferences.  Her ‘precept-upon-precept’ classes opened my heart and mind to deepen my approach to God’s Word.  Over the years she was like a friend to me, encouraging me to pick my own topics, create my own workshops and teach Scripture with the passion that only comes from His inspiration and creativity.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)
