“My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.  Do not let kindness and truth you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.

“So you will find favour and good repute in the sight of God and man.  Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.  It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.  Honour the Lord from your wealth and from the first of all your produce; so your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will overflow with new wine.

“My son do not reject the discipline of the Lord or loath His reproof, from whom the Lord loves He reproves, even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:1-12

The ultimate wisdom is trusting in the Lord with our entire heart.  That takes discipline.  The two verses (5-6) were the favourite verses of one of the most courageous Christians I had the privilege of knowing personally.  He became a long-time friend.

His life was filled to overflowing with one tragedy after another.  Sweet Adrian, however, loved the Lord.  His conviction and trust really was astounding to any who met him and took time with him.

One evening when I made a regular weekly call to him, he shared with me that he was in very peculiar pain.  In fact, the pain was so severe he ended up in hospital.  The hospital thought he must be faking the pain as it couldn’t be that severe.  Over the months of tests and a variety of treatments they discovered that he had a rare and difficult to diagnose cancer that was destroying his bones.

It took about 18 months until he slipped quietly away one night.  A mutual friend stood by him, phone in hand, speaking the prayers, words of care and love that I had for him.

He was so courageous and hopeful.  One thing about Adrian that would affect any heart was his love of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Proverbs 3:5-6 were the last words I heard him speak before he went Home to be with His Saviour.  It is a precious memory for me that remind me of God’s great promise to us if we will only trust Him.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)
