"And Abram passed through the land
as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was then in the land. And the Lord appeared to Abram and said, 'To
your descendants I will give this land.'
So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.
"Then he proceeded from there to the
mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and
Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the
name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed
on, continuing toward the Negev.
"Now there was a famine in the land;
so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the
land." Genesis 12:6-10
God has just spoken the Abrahamic Covenant of purpose (Genesis 12:1-3)
and even after hearing this, Abram took Lot and Sarai began to travel around
the lands searching for relief from the famine.
Egypt was not forbidden and certainly would have been tempting. With the drought, this was a place to survive,
perhaps thrive.
However. all indications are that Abram did not stop to consider his
direction away from Canaan. He did take
everything into account but the promise of God and moved quickly from faith to
fear. Here at the first touch of hunger,
fear and the hope of riches; the vision of God's promise was lost and the whole
enterprise waylaid temporarily...it would take plagues to restore Sarai to her
destiny and deportation to get Abram back to Canaan.

is His will.
