“’I will surely snatch them away [consume], ‘ declares the Lord; ‘There
will be no grapes on the vine and no figs on the fig tree, and the leaf will
wither; and what I have given them will pass away.’
“Why are we sitting still? Assemble yourselves and let us go into the
fortified cities and let us perish there, because the Lord our God has doomed
us and given us poisoned water to drink, for we have sinned against the
Lord. We waited for peace, but no good
came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror!
“From Dan is heard the snorting of
his horses; at the sound of the neighing of his stallions the whole land
quakes; for they come and devour
[consume] the land and
its fullness, the city and its inhabitants.
’For behold, I am sending serpents against you, adders, for which there
is no charm, and they will bite you,’ declares the Lord.” Jeremiah
8:13-17
Do you remember the story of
Daniel? Most of us do. Think about the first chapter when Daniel and
his three friends (Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, their Babylonian names) were
taken to the city of Babylon as a prisoner and all the other adventures that
fill that book.
Well, Jeremiah as God’s prophet, is
weeping and speaking of the terrible things that would happen by the hand of
God, through the ferocity of the Babylonian conquers, if they failed to turn
back to Him. But their excesses, excuses
and lack of responsibility distracted them and they slipped slowly away from
His love and direction.
This story is a common one that is
repeated often in history. God will not be mocked. His ways are true and His guidance and Commandments
are there for our good and His glory. We
must trust Him and follow Him. All other
paths lead to disappointment, loss, and pain.
Take care with love, especially
His! Your servant and friend in Christ,
who still prays for you each morning.
Darlene
