“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Even though Moses and Samuel were to stand
before Me, My heart would not be with this people; send them away from My presence
and let them go!
“And it shall be that when they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’ then
you are to tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord:
‘Those destined for death, to death; and those destined for famine, to
famine; and those destined for captivity, to captivity’’
“’I will appoint over them four kinds of doom,’ declares the Lord: ‘the
sword to slay, the dogs to drag off, and the birds of the sky and the beasts of
the earth to devour [consume] and destroy.
I will make them an object of horror among all the kingdoms of the earth
of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, the king of Juda, for what he did in
Jerusalem.’” Jeremiah 15:1-4
To our minds, God sometimes seems unfair, doesn’t He? He seems to sometimes punish the innocent
with the guilty. I used to wonder how He
could completely wipe out an entire group or land, even the animals.
The more I thought and prayed about this characteristic of God -- to
judge and completely destroy -- the more I realised we are unable to judge the
hearts of anyone, that is God’s department.
The followers of Manasseh used his leadership as their excuse to do what
they thought was right in their own eyes.
Repenting and committing our lives to Jesus Christ does not mean we no
longer sin, but unlike those in the Old Testament, Jesus is the one who bore
the punishment for us all. Our
responsibility is to cling to Him for the strength to choose His way over the
ways of the world even when our leaders seem corrupt.
Take care with love, especially His!
Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each
morning. Darlene
