“One evening David got up from his couch and was walking on the flat roof of the king’s palace, and from there he saw a woman bathing; and she was very beautiful in appearance.  David sent word and inquired about the woman.  Someone said, ‘Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?’

“David sent messengers and took her.  When she came to him, he lay with her.  And when she was purified from her uncleanness, she returned to her house.  The woman conceived; and she sent word and told David, ‘I am pregnant.’  Then David sent word to Joab [at the front lines fighting in the war], saying, ‘Send me Uriah the Hittite.’  So Joab sent Uriah to David.” II Samuel 11:2-6

“God does not whitewash His heroes.  Their sin is mentioned as black as it is.  The sins of men and the judgment of God are not ‘soft-pedalled’ as it would be if mere men had written the Bible.[1]

If you are just reading through II Samuel, you’re thinking David is wonderful and unstoppable because of all of God’s blessings and David’s integrity and self-control.  You never expect Bathsheba to pop up.

The rest of the story tells that when Uriah arrived back, David told him to go home and take a break with his wife (to cover up the pregnancy).  Yet, Uriah honoured his men and king by not indulging.  What was David to do?

David to choose to send Uriah back to the war.  David ordered Joab to set Uriah in the front lines and have the rest of the troops pull back, leaving Uriah defenceless to be killed.  What a plot to cover his sin!  But really who would expect such a sordid, ‘soap opera’ type of story to be in the Bible!

And there are so many of them!  They demonstrate our own depravity and selfishness and sinfulness.  That is why they are there -- to demonstrate the unfathomable depth and breath and length of God’s love for us and how valuable His saving grace is!  Isn’t that NEAT!!

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)
