B'rit...

“Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. The Lord smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said to Himself,

“‘I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter and day and night shall not cease.’” Genesis 8:20-22

For this week, I’m doing some research into the meanings of the different words used to express a promise.  Sometimes learning the width and depth of a word from its original language can help our understanding and application of verses.

The focus will be on words from both the Old and New Testaments and include the words:  covenant, vow and promise.

The first example is the word used for covenant -- ‘b’rit’.  It is thought the root of this word means ‘to fetter/ shackle’.  It is used to mean covenant, league, confederacy, treaty, agreements between men and agreements of God to men.

It can be confirmed with an oath to the Lord and sometimes with materials of value.  Kings (such as David) were established with covenants that could indicate the superior military power of a conquering king -- not of mutual agreement.

But the most frequent use of the word ‘b’rit or covenant’ is by God, Himself, who establishes, causes to stand and confirms His word.  It occurs over 280 times in the Old Testament, with the first use being Genesis 6:18. One small observation is that God does not swear this promise to man, but to Himself.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)
