THE SIN OF TWO DESPERATE DAUGHTERS

“Thus says the Lord, ‘For three transgressions of Moab and for four I will not revoke its punishment, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.  So I will send the fire upon Moab, and it will consume the citadels of Kerioth; and Moab will die amid tumult, with war cries and the sound of a trumpet.  I will also cut off the judge from her midst, and slay all her princes with him,’ says the Lord.” Amos 2:1-3

“Lot went up from Zoar, and stayed in the mountains, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to stay in Zoar; and he stayed in a cave, he and his two daughters.  Then the firstborn said to the younger,

“‘Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of the earth.  Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him that we may preserve our family through our father.’  So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

“On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, ‘Behold I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink  wine tonight also, then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve our family through our father.’  So they made their father drink wine that night also and the younger arose and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

“Thus both daughters of Lot were with child by their father.  The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.  As for the younger, she bore a son and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the sons of Ammon to this day.” Genesis 19-30-38

The Moabites and Ammonites were the offspring of Lot from the sin of incest by his two daughters.  (Both tribes were fierce enemies of Israel and Israel was never able to conquer them).  Lot had not found suitable mates for his daughters.

By the time they were forced to flee the city with their father they had already become accustomed to the sinful ways and morals there.  Hiding in this cave they became desperate, deceitful and determined to have what they wanted.  It is a danger for us all … the likelihood to sin when we are desperate for what we feel we must have and can’t wait for.  And there is always a price to pay.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning.  Darlene
