FORGETTING JONAH

“Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, now they are fleeing; ‘Stop, stop,’ but no one burns back.  Plunder the silver!  Plunder the gold!  For there is no limit to the treasure -- wealth from every kind of desirable object.

“She is emptied!  Yes, she is desolate and waste!  Hearts are melting and knees knocking!  Also anguish is in the whole body and all their faces are grown pale!

“Where is the den of the lions and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, lioness and the lion’s cub prowled, with nothing to disturb them?  The lion tore enough for his cubs, the killed enough for his lionesses, and filled his lairs with prey and his dens with torn flesh.

“’Behold, I am against you,’ declares the Lord of hosts,’ I will burn up her chariots in smoke, a sword will devour [consume] your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard.’” Nahum 2:2:13

Did you ever wonder what happened to Nineveh?  You know, after the story of Jonah and the fish, etc.?  Well Nahum addresses this.  God had graciously sent Jonah to this land to give the people there a chance to repent.  And they did!  Great!

But once Jonah was off to other needy places, the people of Nineveh returned to their sin and therefore the consequences of their choice was destroying them

God’s patience is unfathomable but there is a time coming when people, cities and nations will have no more time to repent.  Assyria was a mighty nation that had grown rich and fat by conquering the nations around them – that was where all their gold and silver came from, but their wealth and might could never protect them from the wrath of God’s judgment.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning.  Darlene
