The 144,000 Parthenoi

"And I looked, and behold, the Lamb was standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand having His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads.  And I heard a voice from heaven, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps.

"And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one could learn the song except the one hundred and forty-four thousand who had been purchased from the earth.

"These are the ones who have not been defiled with women for they have kept themselves chaste.  There are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes.  These have been purchased from among men as first fruits to God and to the Lamb.  And no lie was found in their mouth; they are blameless." Revelation 13:1-5

Here is a passage that has been seen in so many ways.  So let's look a bit closer.  First, there were 144,000 from Israel mentioned in 7:2-4 and 9:4 (for those of you who remember to read these devotions with your Bible nearby and who keep Acts 17:11 in mind).

This is poetic and symbolic writing with John trying to use words to describe an emotional vision that is to be relevant even today.  Who could these "undefiled" ones be?

The key is the word used for these 144,000 and what the passage itself says about them.  The word "parthenoi" actually means virgins.  It is a word used for those outside marriage, including those where the spouse is dead, so it is not about abstinence from sex for life (God held marriage sacred and the marriage bed undefiled).  It is rather, about purity of walk and attitude of heart.

These 144,000 are faithful examples/ representative of disciples who endeavour to put Christ first in their lives.  God's purpose for our lives is for each of us to grow more into the image of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ.  This is a moment-by-moment abandoning our own efforts and surrendering to our Heavenly Father in obedience and love.
