‘What are the 10 Commandments of God in the Bible?’
By DLM Christian Lifestyle (22 min)
[Jesus speaking] “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill
and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these
are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and
swallow a camel!
“’Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of
the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of
the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may be come clean also.
“’Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the
outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all
uncleanness Even so you too outwardly
appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and
lawlessness.’” Matthew 23:23-28
The Commandments Jesus discussed with the scribes and
Pharisees during His ministry remind us of Jesus observations above. The Pharisees and scribes ‘lorded over’ the
people of Israel as the ‘enforcers’ of the Commandments and took great pride in
their ‘apparent righteousness and superiority at resisting sin’.
When Jesus revealed how even thinking about the prohibitions
of the Commandments (calling a brother fool or lusting after a woman) betrayed
the evilness living in all hearts – He dangerously convicted the scribes and
Pharisees themselves.
I found it curious that He did not mention Commandment 2 – forbidding
a graven image or idol and Commandment 4 – to keep the Sabbath holy. Perhaps because these two were relatively
easy to enforce. The religious leaders obsessed
over what appeared right in the temple and what you could and could not do on
the Sabbath.
The Ten Commandments (and the 613 rules) were given by God
to protect us and help us navigate through a world where absolutes are often
missing. The Commandments and rules were
also given to remind us how much and how often we need to rely on the saving
grace and forgiveness of our Lord Jesus Christ!
(If you take time to watch the entire video above, you will learn of the only Old Testament Commandment of the ten that is no longer relevant today.)
Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still
prays for you each day)
