By PragerU (5 mins 27 Sec)

“And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.’ Exodus 21:17

“Then some Pharisees and scribed came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying, ‘Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders?  For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.’  And He answered and said to them, ‘And why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

“’For God said, ‘Honour your father and mother,’ and , ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother let him be put to death.’  But you say, ‘Whoever shall say to his father or mother, ‘Anything of mine you might have been helped by has been given to God,’ he is not to honour his father or his mother.  And thus you invalidate the word of God for the sake of your tradition.’” Matthey 15:1-6

“’For Moses said, ‘Honour your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death’;” Mark 7:10

These verses changed my life!

I had often heard of tithing.  (Remember my family did not attend a church or have that much of an interest in the Bible).  Yet, having read the book a few times, I was curious about the idea of tithing.  I didn’t have a lot of money, but I wanted to honour God in some way because He loved me enough to sustain me and save me from my evil nature.

I was living away and had a job.  It occurred to me that I could make a ‘tithe’ of sorts to them.  So I began to send my Mom and my Dad a tithe.  They were no longer able to work and did not want to be dependent on social services.  It was a way to honour and thank them for all they had sacrificed for me as I was growing up.

Today, many only wish to escape their parents and be done with them.  Yet, as we grow up, here is a way to honour our parents as they grow older and more dependent.

God knows best.  He has always had a plan to grow us up for His glory and our good, even with parents we see as ‘not the best’.  Sometimes, we can serve Him by helping our parents.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you each day)
