“And it came about that while
Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to
Ephesus, and found some disciples, and he said to them, ‘Did you receive the
Holy Spirit when you believed?’ And they
said to him, ‘No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.’ And he said, ‘Into what then were you
baptised?’ And they said, ‘Into John’s
baptism.’ And Paul said, ‘John baptised
with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was
coming after him, that is, Jesus.’ And
when they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 19:1-5
“For you have not received a
spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of
adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba!
Father!’ The Spirit Himself bears
witness with our spirit that we are children of God, as if children, heirs also,
heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order
that we may also be glorified with Him.” Romans 8:15-17
“Do
not look for a subtle meaning in the question [Did you receive the Holy
Spirit?], it was a very straightforward one.
He [Paul] was asking, ‘Are you Christians? Had he asked them in that form, they might
well have answered positively on the basis of a poor understanding of what it
means to be a Christian. But the
question he did ask could not be so easily evaded. He did not ask them a doctrinal question, but
a question about their personal experience.
Was there any evidence that the Holy Spirit had come to live within
them? He expected them to KNOW on the
basis of their experience.
I
could not resist duplicating those amazing two Scriptural passages. Christ is our PERSONAL Saviour. When we give our life to Christ and the Holy
Spirit comes to live in our hearts there ARE changes...ones that may seem insignificant
at first, but there are changes.
The
day after I had the privilege of leading Hans to the Lord, and with no prompting
on my part, he shared two delightful things with me that demonstrated this very
difference. (You see he had BEEN a “Christian”,
as many people will tell you they are.)
What was different now was the validity of his commitment to
Christ! One had to do with a New Age
talisman he had worn for years and the other was with “changes in the vibrancy”
he found in the way the Bible “spoke with him.”
Take
care with love, especially His! Your
servant and friend in Christ, Darlene
