By Joao Varela (5 min 27 sec)

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent Me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners; to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God;

“…to comfort all who mourn, to grant those who mourn in Zion, giving them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.  So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.” Isaiah 61:1-3

“And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him.  And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor.  He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord.’” Luke 4:14-19

Jesus just read Scripture in His local synagogue and crossed the line with his people.  Israelites were convinced that the Messiah would be an unbeatable military leader who would defeat Rome.  Can you imagine Jesus’ family, friends and the leaders of His church reacting to His outlandish claim?

Things were never the same afterward for our Saviour -- as He did bring the Good News of God’s love and ultimate sacrifice to save His people from the terrible eternal fate they would face without Him.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)
