“Jesus
therefore said to them, ‘Children, you do not have any fish, do you?’ They answered Him, ‘No.’ And He said to them, ‘Cast the net on the
right-hand side of the boat, and you will find a catch.’ They cast therefore, and they were not able
to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
“That
disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord.’ And so when Simon Peter heard that it was the
Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw
himself into the sea. But the other
disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but
about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish.” John 21:5-8
Perhaps the disciples were hungry
but most likely they were discouraged, still unsure that what they had seen –
now more than once – was true. What was
to be their fate now? The familiarity of
the sea, the boat, the nets and hard work would help them consider.
It is likely a few, perhaps many
were thinking of returning to something they knew rather than try to do the
impossible in a hostile world. Yet Jesus
called to them, yet again to remind them who is the Master of all things … even
the fish of the sea.
We all get discouraged
sometimes. We wonder if all the effort of
following Christ is worth it. Yet, He
always finds ways to remind His children who He is in their life.
Take care with love, especially
His! Your servant and friend in Christ,
who still prays for you each morning.
