Surprise of Sin

“And as He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and began asking Him, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’  And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good?  No one is good except God alone.  You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honour your father and mother.’  And he said to Him, ‘Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.’”  Mark 10:17-20

“’For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.  You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’  But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever shall say to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever shall say, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.’” Matthew 5:20-22

“Sin is only sin because it is inconsistent with the ‘glory of God’.  Goodness is an absolute, and goodness is the character of God.  Something is only good because it is consistent with what God is, and conversely, something is only bad because it conflicts with what God is.  Because the target against which sin is measured is the ‘glory of God’, it is only as I discover how I can be what God created me to be, that I can deal with sin.”*

The surprise of sin, isn’t just how appealing it is and how ubiquitous (that it is everywhere) it is, it is that it is not what someone else thinks or even what we think about sin.  It is simply missing THE mark of God’s glory!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, Darlene
