Mercy or Justice?

Meanwhile Back At The Cross - Gordon Mote

“Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

“So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.  But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.” John 19:31-34

The price Jesus paid for our individual and corporate sins is unimaginable.  Yet, there was no other way, because God set a standard no individual could meet.  Jesus knew it was up to Him to submit His will to the will of the Father and die for us.  And we live in thanksgiving to His sacrifice.

Some think we are saved just because God loved us, but God’s love is not what saves us, it is His justice.

“By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.  In this is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [full, proper and complete payment] for our sins.  I John 4:9-10

Does “God forgive us on the basis of His mercy or on the basis of His justice.  Is it because He is being generous and kind toward us, or is it because He is being absolutely right and just toward us?  It is not surprising that the majority indicate it is on the basis of mercy that God forgives.  But they are wrong!

“God forgives us on the basis of His justice (I John 2?9).  If God was to forgive us only on the basis of His mercy, the cross would not have been necessary.  It is the death of Christ on the cross that makes forgiveness by God a just act.  It is in appealing to His justice that forgiveness is possible, not in an appeal to His mercy.”[1]

“And they sang a new song, saying ‘Worthy art Thou to take the book and to break its seals; for Thou wast slain, and didst purchase for God with Thy blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

“’And Thou hast made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God and they will reign upon the earth.’  And I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders, and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands.’” Revelation 5:9-11
