of the BARNABAS and PAUL split | ACTS 15:36

By Ryan Rufus  (6min 58sec)

“And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, ‘Let us return and visit the brethren in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.’  And Barnabas was desirous of taking John, called Mark along with them also.

“But Paul kept insisting that they should not take him along who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.  And there arose such a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus.  But Paul chose Silas and departed, being committed by the brethren to the grace of the Lord.” Acts 15:36-40

[As Paul sat in a prison at the end of his life, here is what he wrote about Mark] “Make every effort to come to me soon, for Demas, having loved this present world has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.  Only Luke is with me.  Pick up Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service.” II Timothy 4:9-11

This morning’s assignment comes from real life.

Have you ever met someone who seem cranky about everything?  Their life is filled with grumbling and many times they have isolated themselves from everyone possible.

When you think about it, somewhere in their life there ‘nests’ a hurt that has ‘birthed’ their behaviour -- as they push others away, even those who might help them.  They likely are reviled by everyone who knows them:  family, previous friends, neighbours, shopkeepers – everyone.

I have a friend, who has been travelling regularly, two hours to and from the home of a man (‘Sheldon’) who has grown bitter, brittle and lost in his anger and strong drink.  Sheldon has only one ‘friend’ he trusts now, and that is a ratty, ill-tempered dog that he loves.

The dog has taken sick.  So, my friend is on his way this morning to get this animal to a vet.  It is sadly apparent God is using this dog as a last thread of hope in Sheldon’s life.

Today’s assignment is to focus on someone you know who is like Sheldon.

1.    Set aside an hour and find a place where you will not be interrupted.

2.    Bring your Bible, notebook, something to write with and a refreshment.

3.    Quiet your heart and pray the Lord will open your heart to insights into an individual who seems to spend a lot of energy pushing everyone away.

4.    Date a page in your notebook and write the name of that person at the top (if you have more than one, complete one at a time).

5.    Write a brief description of what this person appears to be to others and how you know them.  (They could be a family member, a friend, a work colleague, even someone you don’t know well.)

6.    Write out a special prayer request to support this person, their health and relationship with the Lord.  Then covenant to pray for them every morning for the next seven days (at least).

7.    At the end of the week, thank the Lord for working in this person’s life and, if possible, contact them and let them know someone cares about them too.

Take care with love, especially His, Darlene (who still prays for you daily)
