Danger in Works Alone

God Will Make a Way (with lyrics) - Don Moen

“Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.  But someone may well say, ‘You have faith, and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.’

“You believe that God is one.  You do well; the demons also believe and shudder.  But are you willing to recognise you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?  Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

“You see that faith was working with his works and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ‘And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ And he was called the friend of God.  You see that a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone.” James 2:17-24

“But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.”: Romans 11:6

“For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about; but not before God, for what does the Scripture say?  ‘And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.’  Now to the one who works, his wage is not reckoned as a favour, but as what is due.  But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness.” Romans 2-5

God promised to make a mighty nation of Abraham and yet after waiting for ages, “God test Abraham and tell him to take Isaac to a mountain and ‘sacrifice him there as a burnt offering’ (Genesis 22:2).

“Prayer:  Loving Father, You who did not spare Your own Son, but gave Him up for us all, thank You that You have not kept from us any good gift.  Strengthen us to offer to you the spiritual sacrifice of lives that are holy and pleasing to you.  In the name of the only beloved Son, the Lord Jesus.  Amen.”[1]

The Lenten season is a time of humility, not of keeping to a regime of fasting and prayer because it can easily lead to pride in ‘works’.  It is our heart attitude that is most important to our heavenly Father.

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who still prays for you each morning.  Darlene

PS: We are walking through a special Lenten devotional by Michael Raiter, Shadows of the Cross, Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament.  I hope you will enjoy this special time of consideration.

NEW PRAYER REQUESTS

·       UPDATE:  Scott, just started a new job. Praise the Lord.  Thank you for praying for him.  Please continue your prayers for him to seek a relationship with the Lord for himself and his children.
·        UPDATE - Sue Furbee and husband, Sam – They both thank you for your faithful prayers.  The procedure has not shown any positive affect yet from the stem cell treatment.  They remain hopeful as they were told it could take up to six months.  Please keep praying for her recovery and for Sam’s care and devotion.  For more information and to contribute to the high costs of the procedures visit their GoFundMe page:  https://www.gofundme.com/sue-furbee
·        UPDATE - Barbara – the results of her PET scan showed that the spot on her lung was no longer there.  Thank you so much for praying for her and for Tim who supports her daily.  They are my only family left and I’ve not seen them since 2006 and I miss them terribly.
·        USA – that the Lord would demonstrate His power in an unexpected and uniting way during these times of unrest and confusion.  Help hearts settle and rest on You alone.
·        Sergio – lost his job and now looking again.  He was recently diagnosed with adult-onset diabetes.  Was living with his brother, but has been asked to move out, leaving him homeless.
·        Claudio – Has had a disappointing setback and needs prayers for encouragement in his battle with liver cancer.  Pray for his health carers to be compassionate and wise and for Elea, his wife, that she has the extra strength and hope to hold his hand through this.
·        Toron – finishing his high school studies and needing strength, focus and confidence, especially with maths.
