Like A Ship With A Gaping Hole

By Candy Hemphill Christmas
(For my little brother who shared it with me)

"Thou hast kept me alive that I should not go down to the pit.  Sing praise to the Lord, you His godly ones, and give thanks to His holy name.  For His anger is but for a moment, His favour is for a lifetime; weeping may last for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning.

"Now as for me, I said in my prosperity, 'I will never be moved.'  O Lord, by Thy favour Thou hast made my mountain to stand strong.  Thou didst hide Thy face, I was dismayed.  To Thee, O Lord I made supplication.  What profit is there in my blood if I go down to the pit?  Will the dust praise Thee?  Will it declare Thy faithfulness?

"Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me; O Lord, be Thou my helper.'  Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing; Thou hast loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness; That my soul may sing praise to Thee and not be silent.  O Lord my God, I will give thanks to Thee forever." Psalm 30:3b-12

"A lake freighter nearly a block long was tied up, and I stared at the gaping hole in its side that ran from the bow to stern, several feet wide.  "'What's happening?  I asked.  'Why is there such a huge cut all along the ship?'

"'They've brought her in here to overhaul her - actually to enlarge her capacity,' was the reply.  'They have literally sliced the thing right through the middle, jacked up the top half, and now they're welding in pieces to fill the space.  When they're done, the ship will carry almost twice as much cargo as before.'

"I could not help thinking that sometimes human beings get ripped apart as well, and though for a time their lives are an ugly sight to behold, they become bigger people in the end.  The painful surgery has enlarged their capacity to serve.  God has once again shown His creative management skills, and for that we can only give Him praise."[1]

The aftermath of suffering, difficulty, chaos and confusion in your life will surprise you with the elegance of God's plan for your life!  It will also surprise those around you!

Take care with love, especially His!  Your servant and friend in Christ, who prays for you each morning, Darlene
